Stewardship Note for Pentecost: One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God’s word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be. Word of Life. Christianity is not mainly - or even significantly about politics. It’s about living and sharing the love of God. And Christian political engagement, when it happens, is never mainly the task of the clergy. That work belongs to lay believers who live most intensely in the world. Christian faith is not a set of ethics or doctrines. It’s not a group of theories about social and economic justice. All these things have their place. All of them can be important. But a Christian life begins in a relationship with Jesus Christ; and it bears fruit in the justice, mercy and love we show to others because of that relationship.–Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, 3/2010 PENTECOST SUNDAY - May 23, 2010 (I)n one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. – 1 Corinthians 12:13a Come, Holy Spirit. When we hear “Come, Holy Spirit” we think of today’s story from Acts. But the truth is that today’s scene is but one moment from the Spirit’s long presence in salvation. The spirit of God (ruach) is present at the dawn of creation, blowing over the chaotic waters as God commands light to be. That same spirit of God filled the prophets of Israel. “The spirit of the Lord came upon me” fills their witness, as they guided Israel in their quest to be faithful to the loving, merciful God of their covenant. ....Jesus begins his ministry in Luke’s Gospel by saying the Spirit is upon him. On the cross, according to John, he gives up his spirit. Today Paul tells us that this Holy Spirit is from God, who raised Christ from the dead. That same Spirit of all these biblical accounts and more was there at our baptism and continues to live in us. We are temples of that Spirit, witnesses to the Spirit’s grace. And it is in the Holy Spirit that we will continue to live in the gospel’s light, and to pursue our life of eternal glory in Christ. The second collection this weekend is for all remaining envelopes in your budget packet for the month of May Welcome JPII of New England The Catholic world is celebrating every year the pontificate of John Paul II around his birthday, May 18. This Sunday at the 11 a.m. liturgy, the Executive Board of the JPII Foundation of New England will join us for a special Mass. REFLECTIONS ON FORTY HOURS Any Catholic community that exists is nourished by the Eucharist. Across the Catholic world devotional practices of adoration and Eucharistic processions are very common and strongly recommended by the Church teaching. In St. Joseph Church, the first Eucharistic devotion was introduced in 1887 in the month of May. The other parishes in New England scheduled their Eucharistic devotions in subsequent months, however, before Christmas. Although later on this original schedule was modified, nevertheless the Forty Hours devotion retained its place of importance and significance in the life of parish communities. Our forefathers looked forward to this devotion with great anticipation, and celebrated with great reverence elaborate liturgies, and liturgical pageantry. It was three days of devotions when the parish families gathered together at the Eucharistic altar. Although human needs did not change and likewise teaching about the Eucharist is the same, yet our parishioners pay much less attention to these special days in the life of the parish. We still retain the vibrant liturgies, beautiful singing of the choirs, Stearns Vespers etc., but participation of the people is disturbing. I want to thank everyone who despite secularism and indifference of many, still took part in this devotion and obtained many needed graces, especially the organist, Eucharistic Ministers, parish organizations, and the First Communion class. Page 3 May 23, 2010 - 23 maj 2010 MONTH OF MARY The litany to the Blessed Mother followed by benediction will be prayed in the Basilica on Mondays at 7 p.m. in English, on Fridays at 7 p.m. in Polish, and on Sundays following the 11 a.m. Mass. Please join us as we express our love for the mother of our Lord and to petition her for special blessings from her Son. FLOWERS The flowers in front of the Blessed Mother altar for Our Lady of Fatima were donated by Roland Malboeuf in memory of his mother Lucy A. Malboeuf. DONATIONS St. Joseph Basilica. We acknowledge the donation of $150 given by John and Lynn Marsh on the occasion of the baptism of their grandson. Thank you and may the child grow in God’s graces and good health. MEMORIAL DAY On Monday, May 31st, the nation is remembering our veterans with special services and celebrations. We will gather at the cross of St. Joseph Basilica Garden of Peace at 9:55 a.m. to pay tribute to our heroes who have given their lives or fought in the wars to preserve our freedom. A National Moment of Remembrance is held on this day at 3 p.m. local time for all Americans “to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps’.” The red poppy became the symbol of remembrance which was introduced by Moina Michael in the early 1900's after penning the following poem inspired by “In Flanders Fields”: We cherish too, the Poppy red, That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies. THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST CORPUS CHRISTI On Sunday, June 6th, we will observe the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, known as Corpus Christi. This feast day is marked with processions and liturgical pageantry in every Catholic church, cathedral and Basilica throughout the universal Church. This year, the services will begin with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on East Main St.and conclude at Saint Joseph Basilica. The customary 11 a.m. Mass at Saint Joseph Basilica is cancelled and we encourage parishioners to attend the 11 a.m. liturgy at Sacred Heart.
