RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process
established by the Church for individuals to become Catholic
and receive the Sacraments of Initiation-Baptism, Confirmation,
and the Eucharist. If you wish to become Catholic, or are a
Baptized Catholic in need of making your First Communion
and/or Confirmation, please call the Religious Education Office.
BAPTISM: On designated Sundays. Please call to make
arrangements. Parents are required to receive orientation.
MARRIAGE: Proper preparation for marriage requires one

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 3, 2011
“Come to me, all you who labor and
are burdened, and I will give you
rest.”
– Matthew 11:28
These words of our Savior seem to be
in stark contrast to the previous chapter
from the same Gospel, when we were
told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy
of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on
our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means
that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both
suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not
do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by
ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the
Body of Christ–the community of disciples gathered for
worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us
remember that we can share that burden with our Christian
sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.
This being the first weekend of the month, the second
collection is designated for the Diocesan Obligations.
The second collection next weekend is for Utility and Energy Costs.
DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION
Devotion to the Divine Mercy customary on the first Sunday of
the month will be held today at 12 noon following the 11 a.m. Mass
due to the holiday weekend.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
On Monday, July 4th, we celebrate
America’s Birthday. The smell of the
barbecue, the roar of holiday crowds at events
throughout the land, fireworks, family, picnics
and the beach are the order of the day. It’s
America’s annual birthday party and everyone
is invited.
The document that we know as the
Declaration of Independence was adopted by
Congress on July 4th, the day singled out to mark the event of the
United States establishing itself as a nation. The feeling about the
sanctity of America’s Independence day was best expressed in a
quotation from the Virginia Gazette on July 18th, 1777: “Thus may
the 4th of July, that glorious and ever memorable day, be celebrated
through America, by the sons of freedom, from age to age till time
shall be no more. Amen and Amen.”

FEAST OF ST. ANNE
The festivity of St. Anne has three major parts:
1. On Sunday, July 24th, there is a Deanery VII walking
pilgrimage to St. Anne Shrine in Sturbridge which will start at
Notre Dame in Southbridge at 2 p.m. with one rest stop at the
former Rom’s plaza. Arrival time at the shrine and welcoming
ceremony at approx. 5:30 p.m. It is important to note that there
are three essential components of a pilgrimage. A. Intention of the
pilgrimage; B. The journey. C. Reaching the Shrine.
A. Each component carries its own meaning. Individuals who
contemplate the pilgrimage have a special motive to obtain a
particular grace for themselves or their loved ones i.e. grace of
good health, blessing for their families, happy marriage etc. To that
end they pray every day in that particular intention days before they
begin the journey. The pilgrimage should also be undertaken in a
spirit of gratitude to God for received graces, gift of health or could
be a pilgrimage of expiation in gratitude to God for remission of
sins, conversion etc.
B. The journey itself is a prayerful walk in its particular intention
for the individual who offers to God all the inconveniences and
difficulties of travel. During the pilgrimage there is reading of the
scripture, reflections, confessions, singing, and quite often various
musical instruments to accompany this prayerful group of people.
C. Reaching of the shrine is the object of the pilgrimage and an
important moment of a beautiful experience when you offer to God
the distress of the journey in the solitude of the shrine and its
liturgical celebration. We encourage everyone, especially the
young people, to join others from different parishes on this one
rest-break pilgrimage.
2. Monday, July 25th, we will observe Polish Day at the Shrine in
Sturbridge. We will recite the rosary at the outdoor grotto of the
Blessed Mother and participate in the Mass together with the St.
Joseph Basilica Choir, our organist Robert Wojcik and the Polish
people from the region. Msgr. Anthony Czarnecki will be the
celebrant of the Mass. We would like to sponsor a school bus so we
could be together. Please call the rectory to register at your earliest
convenience.
3. Tuesday, July 26th, the actual solemnity of St. Anne, the St.
Joseph Basilica community will get together in church at 7 p.m. for
a solemn Mass together with the members of St. Anne Society
FESTIVAL REPORT
Our Festival Chairman,Mr. Thom McNally, reports that the gross
income for the three-day festival came to $85,586.50. A full
income report will be issued in the coming weeks.
PARTNERS IN CHARITY
The collection last weekend realized $876.50 which brought us
closer to our quote of $25,000. It would be a tribute to all the
parishioners if we could get the balance and submit it to the diocese
this coming weekend.
JULY BIRTHDAYS
Everybody knows each month of the year is connected to a
birthstone (ruby), but few realize each month also has its own birth
flower. Birth flowers symbolize a new beginning, making them the
ideal gift for celebrating a birthday. For July babies, the Larkspur
is the flower to celebrate their birth month. The Larkspur is
considered a flower with an "open heart," which is also a way to
describe those born in July. The Larkspur is also known as a
Delphinium. The July birth month flower also symbolizes ardent
attachment. Taken in tandem with the open heart, July babies have
the gift of sharing their love candidly, without worry of judgment
or mockery.
There are three common colors for the Larkspur: pink, white, and
purple/mauve. Each color is said to carry a different meaning. At
least, this was the case in the Victorian era. During that time, a pink
Larkspur symbolized fickleness while a white Larkspur meant the
recipient was joyful and happy-go-lucky. The purple/mauve
combination bestowed the compliment of a sweet disposition.

WHAT IS A PRIEST?
Priests are mystery men. They come in different sizes, ages, and
weights. They are everywhere–hurrying, perspiring, kneeling,
praying, laughing, preaching, teaching, pardoning. Little children
run to them, senior citizens turn to them, lay people treasure them,
non-catholics stare at them, and Mary watches over them.
A priest is prudence in a T-shirt, fortitude with a breviary in
hand, justice on a baseball diamond, and temperance at any party.
He is faith with a blueprint, hope with a sense of humor, and
charity with a golf club in hand.
A priest is a humble creature. His hours are long, his salary small,
his Boss is the best. He likes good pastors, the smiles of children,
a good sermon, a home-cooked meal, and the name Father.
A priest is all things to all people in the sight of God. He may be
misquoted, mistaken, and misunderstood, but he will always
forgive because he is a mediator, a peacemaker, and an
intermediary between heaven and earth. It is no wonder God loves
him. He is a man standing at the altar, clothed in holy clothes, who,
while being aware of his own nothingness, speaks to God for us
and to us for God. Although his greatest act is to offer sacrifice, his
most consoling words are “Go in peace, your sins are forgiven.”

JUBILEE EVANGELIZATION
According to sociologists and theologians there is a new spiritual
awakening by baby boomers and returning home, which means to the
local church. On the other hand, contemporary parishes, sometimes
smaller than used to be, switch the emphasis from maintenance to
missionary outreach. In fact, each member of the Church should have
a desire to become an effective missionary in his neighborhood. There
are several guidelines developed for non-church goers. Some include
the following–Build a relationship with someone who is unchurched–share a verbal witness about your faith–invite a person to a
believer’s service–invite a potentially new active member to responsible
stewardship.
These suggestions are incorporated in pastoral planning of various
dioceses and could be very effective in our parish as we prepare for our
125th Jubilee celebration.
