Word of Life. The virtue of chastity...is not a “no” to pleasure and
to the joy of life, but a great “yes” to love as a profound
communication between persons, as love that is capable of
generating life and of generously welcoming a new life which is
born. – Pope Benedict XVI, May 13, 2011

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 10, 2011
You have crowned the year
with your bounty,
and your paths overflow with
a rich harvest.
– Psalm 65:12
God’s Words. Each day we are bombarded with thousands of
words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the
morning, until the last moment of the day when the television
is turned off or someone bids us “good night,” our life is filled
with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us
feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Today the Church
focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s
words just more of the same–part of the endless stream of
words that flow into our cars each day? The challenge today is
to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our
outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the
heart and mind of Christ Jesus.

CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION
This Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. we will pray the rosary
during an outdoor procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. As
always, we invite parishioners, friends, organizations and
especially the Children of Mary to take part in this beautiful tribute
to Our Lady.
The flowers in front of the Blessed Mother altar for Our Lady of
Fatima are given in memory of Kazimiera Lazarowski by her
daughter Gen Lariviere.
125th ANNIVERSARY
Various family celebrations, birthdays, baptisms, or parents’
wedding anniversary, have the rare ability to bring family members
together and celebrate these joyful occasions. However, before the
actual event there is ample time for preparation in which all the
family members actively participate. The 125th anniversary of St.
Joseph Parish family is an important event worthy of celebration
which should involve every member of the parish. It will be a
dignified occasion for the St. Joseph Basilica family to come home
and redefine itself, its vision and its goals. The Jubilee Committee
which will meet on July 12 at 7 p.m. in the rectory for the second
time will identify the planned activities, programs, cultural
programs, and pastoral initiatives which they will share with all
family members. We will never again be given the opportunity to
make an imprint on this beautiful event by active participation, not
only for purely human reasons but for eternal reward which is our
salvation in Jesus Christ. To miss the opportunity to shape our
eternal future would be a tragic mistake.

THE GREAT CHALLENGE
One of the greatest tragedies of our times is not to take our
Christian commitment seriously. When Christianity was
illegal and a person might have to forfeit his life fo practicing
the faith, no one would take his or her commitment lightly.
But today Christianity seems to have become just one of
many favorite American pastimes. It is something “not to get
too excited about.”
Why get excited about your faith? A person once remarked
about his Christian commitment that he had just read the
bible through for the fifth time. Another responded, “The
important thing is not how many times you have been
through the bible, but how many times the bible has been
through you.”
Pope John Paul issued an encyclical entitled The Splendor
of Truth, in which he reflects on how we have a paradise
perspective. The “paradise perspective” is to see things in
light of God’s truth and to live in the light of His truth. It is
easy to water down the truths of our faith, to make our faith
little more than a set of suggestions on how to be nice and
not hurt others.
No, the splendor of the truth is that our faith is our life!
“Catholic” is not a label to be worn, but a life to be lived.
Our belief in Jesus Christ has to give us a perspective on life
that makes us different than those who do not live the
Christian faith or walk the Christian walk.
Your Catholic faith: Just walk it, talk it, preach it, pray
it, teach it, tell it, live it, give it, proclaim it, praise it.

Program (EHLP), to help homeowners who are at risk of
foreclosure in Massachusetts. Eligible homeowners can
qualify for an interest free loan which pays a portion of their
monthly mortgage for up to two years, or up to $50,000,
whichever comes first. EHLP is expected to aid up to 30,000
distressed borrowers, with an average loan of approximately
$35,000. Contact information for participating agencies, the
Pre-Applicant Screening Worksheet and more information

PRAYING A NOVENA WITH THE RIGHT
ATTITUDE
The word novena refers to nine of something. Traditionally
it’s a nine-day prayer, but it can also be a prayer of nine
hours, or nine weeks, or simply nine repetitions. Because a
novena is such a powerful form of prayer, sometimes we can
be tempted to abuse that power. When you hear stories of
prayers that supposedly never fail – as though the novena
were a magical incantation that always gets you what you
want – you’re seeing abuse, and misuse of the novena.
Prayer is not magic. We can’t manipulate God just by
saying a few “special” words. Even the most sincere prayer
doesn’t come with a “guarantee” that we”ll get what we
want. We will get an answer – that much is guaranteed. The
answer may not be what we expect, and there will be times
when it’s exactly the opposite of what we think we want. But
God answers on the basis of our needs, not just our wants.
The celebration to St. Anne scheduled for Tuesday, July
26th, is an excellent occasion to put the above into practice.
As part of your nine-day novena prayer you can participate
in the walking pilgrimage to St. Anne in Sturbridge on
Page 4
Sunday, July 24th .You can also participate on Monday, July 25th
on Polish Day in Sturbridge (please call the rectory for bus
reservations) or you can expand your prayers privately. At St.
Joseph Basilica we will begin a novena prayer each morning on
July 18th. I urge you to make time on your summer calendar to
take part in this powerful form of prayer.
QUESTION TO PONDER
In last week’s bulletin the following question was printed: I
was asked by a college student if an individual who does not
habitually worship on Sunday is cooperating with evil?
Answer: To answer this question would be helpful to define
what is evil. According to St. Thomas Aquinas and many
Catholic thinkers evil is not something in itself but the absence
of good. According to the Book of Genesis Chapter 3, evil
entered into the world when humans and angels sinned, which
means that they turned away from the highest good that is God
and chose what is less and therefore fell away from the best. The
original sin inevitably accelerates diminution of life by death,
suffering and more sin so the evil is due to original sin. The
Christian person is the one who is part of the community that
imitates Christ in recognizing sin and evil. Therefore, the person
who is not worshiping continuously is moving away from God,
depriving himself of His sacramental grace, and the power of the
Word of God, and in addition, negatively influencing others
(social sin). This participation in an evil act could be objective or
subjective. How God is going to judge that person depends on
many factors including his personal awareness of his activities,
his psychological and spiritual makeup, the upbringing by his
parents etc. To turn away from evil is conversion by the grace of
God and transformation of one’s life. (To be continued)

UroczystoÑci te s poprzedzane przygotowaniami, w których

WIELKIE WYZWANIE.
czasach, kiedy chrzeÑcija½stwo by»o zakazane i publiczne wyznawanie
grozi»o Ñmierci, nikt nie lekcewaóy» swojej wiary. Dzisiejsze
chrzeÑcija½stwo nie jest niczym „ekscytujcym”.
Dlaczego nasza wiara powinna nas ekscytowaƒ? Jedna osoba raz
Biblia przemówi»a do ciebie”.
Papieó Jan Pawe» II w encyklice „Splendor prawdy” porusza

ODMAWIANIE NOWENNY. S»owo nowenna oznacza powtarzanie
czegoÑ 9 razy. Tradycyjnie chodzi o dziewi“cio-dniow modlitw“, ale
moóe to byƒ równieó 9-cio godzinna modlitwa, przez dziewi“ƒ tygodni,
lub dziewi“ƒ powtórze½. Poniewaó nowenna jest bardzo efektywn
form modlitwy, czasami jej naduóywamy. Jeóeli s»yszymy, óe
odmawianie nowenny jest „gwarancj” otrzymania jakiejÑ »aski, jest to
naduóywanie nowenny. Modlitwa nie jest magi. Nie moóemy
manipulowaƒ Bogiem wypowiadajc kilka specjalnych s»ów. Nawet
Nowenna do Ñw.
specjalny rodzaj modlitwy.
