Stewardship Note. “I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10) This simple line from the Old Testament presents us with two challenges. First, do we bring God our first fruits – the best that we have to offer? Second, do we remember that everything we have has been given to us by God? We brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing from it. So why not share what we have while we are here? SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the week of February 21 through February 27, 2010 Main Altar Candle I and Candle II In loving memory of Rita Maly Offered by husband and children FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 21, 2010 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. – Romans 10:8 Remember. Once again the Church invites us to enter the desert of repentance. That desert, as today’s first reading reminds us, is also a desert of remembrance. This holy season summons us to remember all that God has done for us. Recall those times when we were held captive by sin and experienced freedom through the gift of God’s redeeming love. As this season of Lent unfolds, let us take to heart the words of Saint Paul ( that the word of God is near us; it is in our mouth and in our hearts) and spend these forty days calling upon the name of the Lord, asking for forgiveness and healing. The second collection this weekend is for the Church in Latin America CHAIR OF ST. PETER – DAY OF INDULGENCE On Monday, February 22nd, we will celebrate the festivity of the Chair of St. Peter. This festivity signifies the primacy, authority, and power of Peter and his successors given by Jesus Christ. When the Pope raised St. Joseph Church to the dignity of a Basilica, he provided us the privilege to obtain a plenary indulgence by visiting the Basilica, receiving Holy Communion (Confession if necessary) and reciting a prayer in the intention of the Holy Father. It may be offered only once for a living person or a soul in Purgatory. A partial indulgence may be received as many times as you fulfill the above obligations. The Church will be open until 4 p.m. to provide the opportunity to people to visit the Basilica and obtain the indulgences. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE We begin the Lenten season of 2010 under the banner Come Home to God’s Mercy. From the early days of Christianity Lent has been the season of prayer, almsgiving, and penance. During this year’s Lenten season we place special emphasis on the Sacrament of Penance. It is our united effort throughout the Diocese of Worcester to take advantage of this enormous God’s mercy by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In the Christian tradition penitential exercises were part of the spiritual life especially during the Lenten journey. Every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. there will be confessions offered in every Catholic church in the Diocese of Worcester to afford the people the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It would be advisable to receive this sacrament on the beginning of the Lenten journey and again before the Triduum. Sacramental confession is not only for forgiving sins but also it gives sacramental grace for performing good deeds. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE RCIA Rite of Sending. Today at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we will be celebrating the RCIA Rite of Sending. To send a catechumen or candidate to the bishop means that a parish has discerned that the person is ready to enter the Catholic Church. Our Catechumens are: Dylan, Jacob, Joseph and Shawn Murphy. Our candidates are: Dian Page 3 February 21, 2010 - 21 luty 2010 r. Auger, Carolyn Rocheleau, Kathleen Sealey, and Pawel Surowaniec. They will be going to Saint Paul’s Cathedral today at 3 p.m. for the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. Across the entire world, Catholic bishops on this first Sunday of Lent will welcome those sent by the parish to gather together with their godparents and sponsors in what is known as the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. In Sacred Scripture, the Book of Revelation makes reference to a “Book of Life,” in which are written the names of those who have chosen to follow the Lord Jesus and be baptized. Those who are already baptized as Catholics or in other denominations, had their names written in the Book of Life at Baptism. In this Rite, those preparing for Baptism are invited to come forward and sign a book, which we call the “Book of the Elect” as a sign of their desire to be numbered among the chosen of God. Please pray for our catechumens and candidates. Religious Ed. Classes 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Monday. Confirmation. Classes are at 8 a.m. in the school on February 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28. Please be prompt. We need your HELP. If you are interested in helping to contribute to our young people’s spiritual formation or adults but don’t feel like you are qualified, basic Catechist training will be held at St. Anthony’s in Dudley. “The Creed” will be for 4 weeks in March. Now is the time to take that step forward. We need your help and your faith. Contact Mary Jolda @ 508-943-3752 or [email protected]. Children Lenten Masses. Every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. during Lent. All families with children are invited to come and celebrate the Eucharist. Mrs. Barbara Mazeika will conduct Liturgy of the Word for Children during the readings at Mass. Children in Grades 2 and lower including 3, 4 and 5 year olds) will be called forward to the front of the altar to be dismissed to go to the priest’s sacristy. They will return to their seats when we are ready to say the Creed. You may accompany your child to the sacristy if they are shy. Lenten Flower Sacrifices. Each week please remind your children to make loving sacrifices and good deeds for others, offering them up to Jesus. Last week we outlined the procedure which will be followed in presenting these offerings to Jesus during the Offertory at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy. These loving sacrifices will turn into “Flowers for Jesus,” a beautiful gift to present to Jesus for Easter!” 40 Days for Life. You are invited to join hundreds of thousands of people across the country taking part in the 40 Days for Life prayer campaign from Feb, 17 through Mar.28, 2010. Please consider volunteering to pray outside of Planned Parenthood in Worcester in response to a request that St. Joseph Basilica cover the vigil site on Wednesday, February 24th. Please refer to last week’s bulletin for additional details or call Mary Jolda 508-943-3752. ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL GYM PLANS FORGE AHEAD While developing the plans for the St. Joseph School Gym and Parish Center I was advised by the architectural company and the members of the Gym Committee that it would be advantageous to obtain the property on 50 Lincoln St. adjacent to our parking lot. Although the property was for sale, we did not have funds to purchase it. After several months of prayers and discussions, I was delighted to find a donor who agreed to buy the house and to donate it to St. Joseph School. It is indeed a great and substantial contribution to our project from an individual who has faith in God and a heart for the children. May God reward our special benefactor, who wants to remain anonymous, with many blessings. As we continue to inch our way in realizing our goal we are grateful for such dedicated individuals whose vision of eternal life motivates them to share their treasure with the children. CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND In order to maximize the offer of one individual who committed himself to give as many scholarships as we raise ourselves, I decided to personally give one full scholarship to a student of St. Joseph School. I cannot afford to pay the full amount immediately, therefore $500 will be deducted from my salary for six consecutive months. I make this sacrificial offer to increase the financial assistance to those who cannot afford a Catholic education. Our parish collection for scholarships was minimal, however, with my donation, the parish contribution and with the matching donation we are able to offer eight scholarships. Let me take this opportunity to thank all those who from their want made a donation to the scholarship drive. I encourage each parent whose child is preparing to enter school in the Fall, to apply for this extra-ordinary assistance. The application may be obtained from the school office and returned by March 15th. MEGA CASH RAFFLE EXCITEMENT Have you bought your ticket?? This publication is a positive alternative to the secular media and a mainstream source of information that should be in every Catholic household. News in the Catholic press is delivered by the faithful, for the faithful, about the faithful, delivered in a professional manner. The Catholic Free Press reports on topics that are important to Catholics and their faith formation, publishes stories that are not available anywhere else, and prints commentaries that help Catholics analyze documents and explain the “whys” behind directives. The same quota of 347 subscriptions that we have had for the past several years again is our goal. It is sad to report that less than 100 subscriptions were received last year. We urge you to put aside $21, which is the annual subscription fee, and return it in the envelope provided in your budget packet. If you have misplaced it please use any envelope, write your name and address on it and drop in the Sunday collection basket and we will be pleased to process it. LENTEN DEVOTIONAL SCHEDULE Sundays.
