If you wish to have your loved ones remembered at any of these Masses, please call or stop in at the rectory between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and speak with Aneta Koæma. Our Blessed Lord has called home our parishioners Stella M. Malek and Norma Paccinini for whom we promise our prayers. May they and all our other deceased parishioners enjoy peace and happiness in God’s Sacred Presence. HANDMAIDS S. Markocki Congratulations and best wishes to the couples who were married here last week: Monika Giemza and Konrad Matys We pray for God’s blessings on them as they begin their new life together. WE WELCOME IN BAPTISM Amelia Grace, daughter of Aaron Marc and Martha Michele (Emmerich) Ebent; Haley Ray, daughter of Thomas K. and Judith (Ray) Thompson Prayer for Christian Unity O God, holy and eternal Trinity, we pray for your church in the world. Sanctify its life; renew its worship; empower its witness; heal its divisions; make visible its unity. Lead us, with all our brothers and sisters, towards communion in faith, life and witness so that, united in one body by the one Spirit, we may together witness to the perfect unity of your love. Amen. The Prayer of the Fifth World Conference on Faith and Order World Council of Churches January 19, 2003 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Our Lady of Lourdes Church 1444 South Keeler Ave. Chicago, Il. 60623-1112 773-766-5700 January, 2003 Keeping the Records Straight Dear Sisters and Brother in Christ, At the beginning of a New Year, we examine the record of our lives to prepare for the future. The Archdiocese of Chicago at the beginning of this New Year is also setting out several records in order to help us see how we are living together in Christ. The financial record for the last fiscal year was set out in the annual financial report published in the December 22, 2002, issue of the Catholic New World. It will be complemented soon with a report on the total debt relief given to the parishes to celebrate the great Jubilee of the year 2000; another report, coming out in February, will give the results of the Millennium Campaign: Sharing Christ’s Gifts. Next week, a report will be published setting out the record on cases of sexual abuse of minors brought against priests here. Cardinal Bernardin published a report ten years ago, giving the history of such allegations to that date. The new report will bring that report up to date. The report on sexual misconduct will also include a report on the costs for therapy for victims and settlements, the costs of treatment and care for priests accused of misconduct, and legal expenses of the Archdiocese. Ten years ago, Cardinal Bernardin sold undeveloped property in order to meet these costs. No donation, given to either a parish or to the Archdiocese, will be used to meet the direct costs of the sexual abuse scandal. Finally, the Archdiocese each year examines its sacramental records. Two points in the still incomplete records for this past year give me pause. The numbers on baptisms, first communions, confirmations and funerals are constant. The number of marriages has been falling the past several years. This could be because people are delaying marriage or it could be because people are not marrying but simply living together or, perhaps, substituting a civil ceremony for the celebration of the sacrament of marriage in the Church. In any case, this is a statistic worth pondering. Also this year, the October count of people attending Mass on Sunday has shown a decline for the first time after a succession of modest gains in the past five years. Reasons for this also deserve some reflection. At the very least, it shows that efforts to become an evangelizing Church, inviting people to come to know Christ in his Eucharistic self-sacrifice and to share his spiritual gifts, are more than ever needed in the Archdiocese. God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago Jan. 6, 2003 Dear Father Cortesi and St. Ferdinand’s Parishioners — Thank you for your generous December sharing check of $1,122.35. We appreciate your caring and sharing. Once again, thank you for all the Christmas gifts for the kids and our shut-ins. You touch a lot of people’s lives for the better. You’re in our prayers and in a special Mass I offer each month. With thanks, Father Ray Contribution Statements In the past, many parishes (including ourselves) mailed out contribution statements at the end of every year. We have found, however, that due to certain changes in IRS tax laws and other circumstances, most people no longer need the information found on these statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again this year. If you still need a contribution statement, please call the rectory, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to request one and to arrange a time and date that you will pick it up. Statements will be printed by request only. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Last weekend the people of St. Ferdinand Parish donated $12,794.71 in the regular collection. Unfortunately, we fell far below our weekly goal of $15,000 after almost reaching that target amount on the previous two weekends. A weekend such as this demonstrates our reliance on the weekly stewardship of our parishioners. Please be generous in your support of the mission and ministries of St. Ferdinand Church. Thank you.! Costigan, Parish Business Manager COLLECTION: ENVELOPES: LOOSE MONEY: TOTAL Donated: January 11-12, 2003 $8,718.50 $4,076.21 $12,794.71 BUDGET: GOAL$15,000 Amount Over (Under) ($2,205.29) Page Four Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2003 Celebration of Catholic School Week Begins NEXT Sunday, January 26 Beginning next Sunday, St. Ferdinand Parish School joins more than 8,000 Catholic Schools nationwide to observe Catholic School Week using the theme, "Catholic Schools: Making a World of Difference." Throughout the week, we will focus on different parts of our community - parish, prayer life, students, teachers - to demonstrate how they make a difference in our world. Please join us whenever you can to help us celebrate. It is your prayers and good deeds that contribute so much to the success of your parish school. We are all most grateful for the ways in which you help the parish to educate the young in the teachings of the Lord. Sunday, January 26, 11:00 - 1:00 • Visit and see the science lab, art room, library, and computer lab • Watch student demonstrations and programs • View student work and projects • Meet and greet your school board members Wednesday, January 29, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. • Visit classrooms while they are in session • Watch the students as they go to gym, art and music Other Events • All school liturgy, Tuesday, January 28, 8:15 in Chapel • Teacher Appreciation Day, Thursday, January 30 • Kids Day, Friday, January 31 Bulletin reminder: All notices for the January 26th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, January 20th. You may drop your bulletin notices off at the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin” or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin notices is [email protected]. Have you ever taken the time to watch the children of our parish? Maybe you have witnessed boys and girls receiving their first Holy Communion or observed the school children who enthusiastically join in with the lively choir music at the 10:30 mass. If you take a closer look you will notice something in their eyes; an almost child-like wonder for the faith they practice. Why is it, with the experiences that come with age, that this gleam in OUR eyes becomes dimmed? Who extinguishes this fire and keeps us from jumping into the song with all of our hearts? If you would like to rediscover how GOOD it can feel to experience the pure love of God in our hearts, we have just the thing for you. It is with great enthusiasm and hope that all men of St. Ferdinand Parish are invited to experience the invigoration, joy, and power of the CRHP weekend. This mini-retreat (held at our very own parish) is an opportunity to re-ignite the burning passion for our faith! A combination of faith sharing, affirmation, prayer, and thanksgiving, is a Christ centered experience that will change the way you look at the Father, your family, and perhaps your own life. CRHP is an experience like none other. If being a Catholic has become more of a habit than a joyous, enthusiastic experience, then please consider joining us on our next weekend; February 8-9, 2003. Contact Ron Pasko at 773-636-1299 (or 773-637-6929) for more details. That gleam that you see in the eyes of the children of our faith can be yours... Remember- a moment can change your mind; a weekend can change your life. January 19, 2003 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Happy Birthday, Mrs. Tully Congratulations and God’s blessings on Delia Tully are wished by all her family and friends. Saturday, January 25th is Mrs. Tully’s 102nd birthday. Mrs. Tully has 8 children, and is the proud grandmother of 32 grandchildren and, at last count, 51 great-grandchildren. When she is not visiting family in California or Florida, Mrs. Tully walks to 7:00 Mass every morning. One of her favorite passions is playing pinochle with her friends in the Friendship Club every Monday. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May he look upon you with kindness and give you his peace. Page Five A merica needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. Ró¿aniec bowiem z natury swej wymaga odmawiania w rytmie spokojnej modlitwy i powolnej refleksji, by przez to modl¹cy siê ³atwiej odda³ siê kontemplacji tajemnic ¿ycia Chrystusa, rozwa¿anych jakby sercem Tej, która ze wszystkich by³a najbli¿sza Panu, i by otwarte zosta³y niezg³êbione tych tajemnic bogactwa”. —Jan Pawe³ II. January 19, 2003 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine News from the Women’s Center January 22nd marks the 30 anniversary of the legalization of abortion. At that time it was said that it would be a rare and unusual procedure. More than 46 million babies have been aborted in this country since 1973. Approximately 4,000 are murdered each day. Many, many women are suffering from post abortion syndrome. The Women's Center is a crisis pregnancy center which helps approximately 5,000 women and their families each year. We offer them choices other than abortion and provide material assistance, counseling, post abortion counseling, friendship and prayer support. Thomas Euteneuer, the president of Human Life International. Father is also a speaker at pro-life conferences around the world. Tickets are $45 in advance for adults; $400 for a table of ten. Reservations are required. For information call 773-794-4771 or 773-794-1313. You can help us by donating a new item for our silent auction. Due to your generosity, we have filled most of our storage area. The only items which we can accept right now are gently used maternity clothes, sleepers, onesies, infant undershirts, receiving blankets, girls and boys clothing (sizes 5 and up). New, clean, plastic baby bottles and disposable diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6 are urgently needed. We always need recent baby cribs and crib parts, mattresses, bumper pads, crib sheets, changing tables, high chairs, baby swings and infant car seats. We cannot accept used toys at this time. To help with these items or to have them picked up call 773-794-1313. If you can deliver them, it helps us even more. If you wish to do something very useful and rewarding, volunteer at a choice of times in our Cicero Avenue Family Room sorting clothes for our clients or helping clients obtain necessities for their families. For more information, please call Kathy at 773-794-8807. Training sessions for counseling volunteers will be held at our Evergreen Park office in February. Call Judy at 773-794-3292 for more information on how you can help babies, women and families. St. Ferdinand Parish Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L.
