Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation class prior to the Baptism of your first child at St. Ferdinand Church. Classes are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory. The dates of the next classes are: February 4, 2004 and April 21, 2004 If you have any questions about the class or dates of upcoming classes please call Joe Kummer at 773/6223022 ext. 366. Since we do not celebrate the sacrament of Baptism during the penitential season of Lent, if you wish to have your child baptized during the Easter Season, then you will need to participate in one of these classes. Please call the rectory at 622-5900 to make your reservation at the class of your choice. As Catholics we take seriously the responsibility to practice the faith we profess and to instill our CatholicChristian values in our children. January 25, 2004 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Sunday, January 25, 2004: St. Ferdinand Catholic School: A Faith-Filled Future! The people of St. Ferdinand Parish are always generous to those in need and the concerns of the greater Church - both throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago and throughout the world. It is truly our responsibility to do so as members of the Universal Church. Unique to the various appeals that help the Church outside of our parish boundaries, however, is the growing practice of “splitting” one’s weekly budgeted support of the Church, primarily from those who donate loose cash. When we have a required second collection once a month, our regular Sunday offertory decreases approximately $2,000. Coupled with the cold weather and another decrease of around $2,000 from envelope users, our regular offertory last weekend dipped to a $4,300 shortfall. Your support of St. Ferdinand Parish through the weekly offertory envelope is very important. When supporting other needs of the Church, please consider a gift that is over and above your usual offering. When we split our contribution, we decrease the ability of our parish to offer the ministries and services that you have grown accustomed to and expect. As always, we appreciate your support and your goodness to others. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager It is with pride that we share with you the accomplishments of our High School aged parishioners. Gordon Technical High School is proud to announce that Naomi Smith was awarded the “Student of the Month” Award in September, 2003 for her dedication to Volleyball; and Natalie Speiser was awarded the “Student of the Month” Award in September, 2003 for her excellence in Art Foundations. Congratulations, Ladies. Your parish family is very proud of you. COMING ATTRACTIONS Faith is the foretaste of that knowledge which hereafter will make us happy. —St. Thomas Aquinas January 25, 2004 As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. We have found, however, that due to certain changes in IRS tax laws and other circumstances, most people no longer need the information found on these statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again this year. If you still need a contribution statement, please call the rectory Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to request one, and to arrange a time and date that you will pick it up. Statements will be printed by request only. Bulletin reminder: All notices for the February 1st bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 AM on Monday, January 26th. You may bring your bulletin notices to the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin” or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin notices is [email protected]. Sheridan Editor and General Manager Dear Parish Friends: On the weekend of September 28-29, parishes across the Archdiocese of Chicago were asked to support their Catholic Press. Your parish’s response warmed our hearts. Because of you, the important ministry of the Catholic Press — The Catholic New World and Chicago Catolico — has received a strong boost. On behalf of the 90,000 Catholic homes which receive either our English or Spanish editions, thank you. Our newspapers are the voice of the church within and beyond your parish boundary and are instrumental in connecting us all to the larger faith, sharing the stories of the people of this archdiocese. TACA NIEDZIELNA Niedziela, 17/18 styczeñ, 2004 W kopertkach: $ 7,265.58 W gotówce: $ 3,423.31 CA£OŒÆ: $10,688.89 Powy¿ej/(poni¿ej) tygodniowego celu: ($4,311.11) Druga kolekta na rzecz Koœcio³a w Ameryce £aciñskiej $3,358.06 Dziêki waszej hojnoœci w zesz³ym tygodniu mogliœmy wesprzeæ Koœció³ w Ameryce £aciñskiej. £¹cz¹c ten fakt z warunkami pogodowymi i spadkiem ofiar o oko³o $2,000 sk³adanych w kopertkach, zesz³otygodniowa sk³adka obni¿ona by³a o przesz³o $4,300. Niech Bóg was wszystkich b³ogos³awi. Daniel P. Costigan, Menad¿er Parfii. January 25, 2004 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time “Dwell in My Love” Sunday January 25, 2004 Prayer of Commitment to End Racism Dear Lord, help us to search our own hearts and seek forgiveness and reconciliation for racist attitudes and beliefs to which we have given credence in our lives. Help us not to speak or act in ways that demean our brothers and sisters. Help us to speak up and act when we hear or see racism demonstrated in any way. Help us to create inclusive, welcoming communities where we live, work and worship as we pledge to work to eradicate the sin of racism wherever it exists, in our hearts, in our church, on our jobs and in our communities. Page Nine That We May Have Priests . . . Mundelein Seminary, as Cardinal George so proudly proclaims, is one of the finest major seminaries in the world. This year 75 men are preparing to be priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Your support enables us to provide these young men with the educational and spiritual formation necessary to face the challenges of priesthood. Because of you, the healing touch of Jesus will live through the work of these future priests for you, your children and your grandchildren, well into this century. The Collection for the Seminary System for the Archdiocese of Chicago is January 31-February 1, 2004. Give us the courage as Christian disciples to work to dismantle racism in the wider community. With your grace, we will dwell together in God’s love with all of our brothers and sisters. We make this prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
