GOD’S SUMMONS
Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first
response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his
sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of
unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty
fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter
fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for
I am a sinful man.”
Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats, then left to
follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart.
When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who
will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.”
We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are
reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in
our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in
anything else won’t lead to anything.
What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees?
What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger?

Farewell and Thank You, Mrs. Aneta Kocma
Five years ago today Mrs. Aneta
(Œwiêtochowska) Koæma joined our
parish staff as Administrative
Assistant. Aneta has served our
parishioners and our parish staff
faithfully in all the traditional duties
of a parish secretary as well as having been an extremely competent
and diligent assistant to Fr. Cortesi
and myself in administrative matters. There were
countless times when her skills as a translator
between the Polish and English languages have been
invaluable during these years when our parish membership increased to over 40% Polish-speaking
Catholic families. In addition, her computer skills
and attention to details have helped us to keep current with our parish records and business matters in
this very active parish.
Mrs. Kocma has accepted a position in the private sector that will utilize many of these same talents that she shared with us since 1999. While her
leaving our staff is a loss to us, we wish her well in
her new endeavors and send with her our appreciation for all of her dedication to the Church and for
five years of fine work. On behalf of our parishioners and parish staff, may God bless you always,
Aneta, for all that you did for St. Ferdinand Parish.

What are the purposes of the World
Day for Consecrated Life?
In his message for the first World Day
for Consecrated Life, the pope said
the day offers the opportunity to
thank God for the gift of consecrated
life, to promote knowledge of the life,
February 8
to invite consecrated people to celebrate what the Lord has accomplished in them, and to
acquire more awareness of their mission in the Church
and in the world.

As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

Fifth Sunday
T
in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]
Gospel: Luke 5:1-11
Call Our language embodies the confusion we experience in the face of
transcendence. For example, the word “terrific” connotes fright, terror.
But a terrific experience is also attractive to us. So, our response is simultaneous attraction and repulsion. We have all had some kind of terrific
experience that has drawn us near and made us afraid. Those experiences
that are somehow beyond us give us some idea of what it is like to be
summoned toward transcendence.
• Comment
The magnificent
Temple paled in comparison to Isaiah’s
vision of God, who appears in the
brightness of angels. The experience
left Isaiah purged and strengthened,
once he recovered his composure. In
his vision he understood himself called
near. But he also felt unworthy to draw
near, much less be addressed by God’s
angels. But called he was. And Isaiah
was finally able to respond in a firm
and loud voice, “Here I am, send me!”
It would be hard to imagine a more
dramatic calling. One wonders how
Isaiah managed to survive to tell the
story. One expects him to be somehow
singed or dazed. He is transformed, for
sure!
Jesus’ call to Peter is less spectacular but no less important. Jesus turned
toward Peter on his turf—well, water,
actually. In any case, the setting was
the shore of the Sea of Galilee, the
place Peter knew best—the lake where
he plied his trade. The detailed, care-
fully written account signals its importance to Peter and to us. This is the
beginning of Jesus’ mission, his
assembling of his closest friends. It is
morning and the fishermen are washing their nets. The long night of toil is
over. It was a hard night, and they had
caught no fish. Jesus needs room along
the shore, the people crowd so close.
After preaching from Peter’s boat a little off shore, Jesus asks Peter to cast
his net, presumably to catch fish—why
else?
•Reflection
Well, Peter
knew fish, but Jesus knew his mission.
The marvelous catch of fish brought
everything into focus for Peter, who
had already spent some time with
Jesus and had witnessed other miracles. But now he saw anew. He fell to
his knees, suddenly aware of who
Jesus was and who he was—or was
not. Who Peter was and what he lacked
did not matter. Who Jesus was and
what he asked mattered absolutely.
Peter knew this, and he knew that this
was it. Along with his fishing partners,
James and John, Peter left his boats
and his fishing and followed Jesus.
Today we hear from one last apostle, who was as surprised as anyone
could be about his calling—Paul. He
does not set forth the story of his calling but rather the mission for which he
was called. We have in today’s second
reading the Church’s oldest surviving
faith statement. Paul sets out the hardwon and fiercely proclaimed credo that
formed the heart of the Church and
claimed the hearts of its members.
These stories of the beginnings of
a new life for Isaiah, for Simon and his
shipmates, and for Paul, all witness to
an undeniable sense of the mystery of
God and of each individual’s sense of
inadequacy. But above all, these stories communicate God’s abiding grace,
which makes their new life and mission possible.

WANTED: Your tired and weary palms.
Please bring in your old palms and place them in the baskets provided in the vestibules of the Church and Chapel. They will be
used to make ashes for Ash Wednesday, February 25th.
Since the twelfth century, it has been the custom in many churches to use ashes that are made from burning the palm branches given to us on Palm Sunday the year before. The use of ashes is a sign of mourning and repentance, but it also takes on the
reality that we are all created from the dust of the earth and that the resurrection that Jesus promises is a resurrection of the body.
The palm branches we saved from last year were once green with life. Like our best intentions sometimes, they have dried out and
are now brittle, crisp and dead. Let us commend to God all the people’s good intentions that grow dry and die. Let us ask God to
burn away all that is dead within us and kindle new fires of love lin our hearts.

Œw. Walenty Rzymianin
Zmar³ w Rzymie, prawdopodobnie 14 lutego
269 lub 270 r. Akta œw. Walentego pisane s¹ na
wzór mêczenników perskich œœ. Mariusza
i Marty (którzy umêczeni zostali razem z synami Audifaksem i Abachumem w Rzymie
i pochowane przy Via Cornelia) - st¹d trudno
okreœliæ, ile zawartych w nich informacji jest
autentycznych. Walenty prawdopodobnie by³
biskupem Interamny (obecnie Terni),
znajduj¹cego siê ok. 100 km od Rzymu.
Inny opis historyczny podaje, ¿e œw. Walenty
by³ kap³anem rzymskim oraz lekarzem. Za
pomoc udzielan¹ mêczennikom uwiêziono go
i zakuto w ³añcuchy. Aresztowania dokona³
Calpurnius, prefekt Rzymu, stra¿nikiem zaœ
by³ Asterius, dowódca jego stra¿y. Walenty
jednak g³osi³ Ewangeliê swemu stra¿nikowi i, podobnie
jak œw. Pawe³, zdo³a³ go nawróciæ, dziêki cudowi, którego
Bóg dokona³ za jego poœrednictwem: adoptowana córka
Asteriusa odzyska³a wzrok. Stra¿nik i ca³e jego domostwo
- podobnie jak Paw³owy Korneliusz - zostali ochrzczeni.
To niestety sta³o siê powodem zaostrzenia kary dla
Walentego, poniewa¿ nawrócenie Asteriusa rozwœcieczy³o
cesarza Klaudiusza II Gota. Nakaza³ biæ Walentego kijami,
a nastêpnie œci¹æ mu g³owê.

rzymska matrona Sabinilla poprosi³a o
wydanie jego cia³a, które pochowa³a w swej
posiad³oœci przy Via Flaminia. W 350 r.
zosta³a w tym miejscu wzniesiona bazylika.
Zosta³a ona zniszczona w VII wieku za czasów Honoriusza I. Obecnie pozosta³y jedynie
ruiny w pobli¿u katakumb, zawieraj¹cych
jeden z najstarszych (równie¿ z VII wieku)
obrazów ukrzy¿owania. Relikwie Walentego
przeniesiono do koœcio³a œw. Praksedesa.
Niewykluczone, ¿e rzymski kap³an Walenty
by³ t¹ sam¹ osob¹, co wspomniany wczeœniej
biskup Terni.
Wed³ug legendy Walenty zakocha³ siê w córce stra¿nika,
a przed sw¹ egzekucj¹ pos³a³ do niej list po¿egnalny, podpisany "od Twojego Walentego". Tradycja wysy³ania
takich listów (oraz obchodów pami¹tki œwiêta œw.
Walentego) zbieg³a siê z rzymskim œwiêtem Lupercaliów,
w trakcie których urz¹dzano tak¿e loteriê mi³osn¹

W wyobra¿eniach artystycznych Walenty przedstawiany
jest jako kap³an z mieczem lub s³oñcem, a tak¿e w scenie

Why Go To Church?
A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper
and complained that it made no sense to go to church
every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote,
"and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single
one of them.. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the
pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the
Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went
on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:
"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife
has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I
cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those
meals. But I do know this... They all nourished me and
gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife
had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead
today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"
When you are DOWN to nothing.... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and
receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical
AND our spiritual nourishment!
