sharing of God’s work ought to permeate even the most
ordinary of family activities.”

As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 7, 2003
My name is Sister Elizabeth Pawlus. I was born on May 21, 1970 as the third of my
siblings. I spent my wonderful childhood and school time with my parents and
brothers in NiedŸwiada (in the region of Podkarpacie which is not far from Krakow).
On May 7,1989 I heard God’s call “Follow me.” After high school graduation,
wrestling with myself, I accepted God’s challenge to join the Missionary Sisters of
Christ the King. From that day on I am living an amazing adventure with Christ, my
dear sisters and with myself.
I am grateful to my Congregation for forming my personality, giving me the opportunity to graduate from the University of Stefan Wyszynski in Szczecin, to teach children, to work with children of special needs, to take care of my sick mother until she
died.
On July 18, 2002, I arrived in the United States. After one year being a “house keeper” in sunny and beautiful Los Angeles, I begin my work in St. Ferdinand Parish. I hope like before, I will be able to enjoy many,
many wonderful, unforgettable moments.
My favorite hobbies are mountain climbing and horseback riding.
May God bless everyone with whom I am going work.
016th DISTRICT
CITIZENS ALERT
EXTREME
CAUTION!
CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!
During the past month, a number of our residents have been victimized by teams of con men who trick our
residents into opening the door to their houses and then steal money or items that are in the house. To prevent you from being victimized, follow these guidelines.
•Keep all your doors locked, (even while you are out gardening or working in your garage.)
•Do not open your doors to anyone you do not know. (These con men can have false identification cards.)
•If someone comes to your door and says they have an emergency, tell them you will call the police for
them. Do not open the door even slightly because they could push their way in.
•If you notice someone who is acting suspiciously in front of your house, at your neighbor’s house or in
front of your bank, do not hesitate to call 911. (Usually these con men work in teams of two or three, so
that is often a clue.)
Beware of the following disguises or ruses that con men have used:
Beware: of any repair men (such as roofers, painters, plumbers, etc....)
Beware: of any person posing as a city employee such as police officers, firemen, inspectors. (All city
employees carry picture identification.)
Beware: of any person posing as the gas, electric, telephone, cable companies offering cash refunds for
over-payment. (If these companies owe you money, they will notify you by mail and adjust your
bill.)
Beware: of any person who approaches you about money that they found and they need your help. (Person
will ask you to hold part of the money or help them make change.)
Beware: of strangers engaging you in conversation while you are entering or leaving your bank or ATM
machine.
Call 911 immediately if you see individuals acting suspiciously or if you have been victimized.
Neighbors, keep a watchful eye out for your neighbors, especially senior citizens on your block. They
are often the targets of these con men.
If you wish to contact the Community Policing Office or the Senior Citizens Office at the 016 th District,
please call (312) 742-4521.

Dear Father Cortesi,
Dear parish family at St. Ferdinand,
Thank you all so much for your kindness extended to
the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Sisters. You gift of
$5,635.54 will make it possible for them to continue their
service in their challenging situation.
Being part of a missionary church is a great responsibility as well as a wonderful opportunity. It is an aweinspiring fact that we are Christ's messengers today. We
are all energized to continue the task through the relationships we form when we meet the missionaries who are
the front-line witnesses. Your faithful interest and support
of these men and women is a vital part of the church’s
mission. Thank you all for your generosity. May you all
receive blessings a hundred fold.
What a wonderful gift to these missionary sisters —
thank you all so much for helping.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Crystal Clear
Reflection
Crystals are so clear, you can get six pure colors from them. As
children we may have been surprised the first time light broke
into six colors refracted through a small prism or crystal or
through mist after rain. This surprising turn delights us, even
though we now understand the physics. The surprising turn of
events in this Sunday’s readings reaches beyond delight. It draws
us into the mystery of God’s dealings with us.
Miracles are manifestations of the reign of God. In all the miracle stories, healing of both body and soul occurs. Whole new
worlds open up, and the healed one gains a kind of access to the
community he or she never had before. The person is whole and
is wholly restored to the community. In welcoming the healed
one, the community itself is healed and restored and made rich.
The heart-rending reality for the deaf man was that his impairment closed him out of everyday life. Jesus’ action on his behalf
makes it crystal clear that no one need be left out of the reign of
God.
In the second reading, James develops this theme. He reminds us
to see as Jesus saw and act as he acted. The community is to be
the welcoming and freeing body gathered in his death and resurrection. This may call for a reversal on our part. We are asked to
identify with the ones who are poor in the eyes of the world. Our
business is not to hand down recrimination and stand in judgment. Our business is to see anew and be renewed.
Each of us has a particular world view, a personal lens through
which we observe and interpret life. Our outlook may not be the
best one or the only one available. We may find it difficult to
readjust our sights once we have them set. We may not want to
bother with all the messiness conversion implies. We may be
tempted to narrow our focus rather than broaden it.
Nevertheless, we and the world would be better off if we took
some time this week to refocus or broaden our vision. Maybe we
are the blind one who will be able to see, the deaf one who will
finally hear, the mute one who sings. Maybe our personal little
desert will bloom.
FIRST READING: Isaiah 35:4–7a
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 146:7, 8–9, 9–10
SECOND READING: James 2:1–5
GOSPEL: Mark 7:31–37
Comment
Isaiah prophesies that the nation’s melancholy will turn to its
opposite. He uses images to make this crystal clear. The blind
will see, the deaf will hear, the one who cannot move will win
foot races, the one who is without words will be full of words—
songs even. The very land itself will come alive: sands will be
watered, deserts will flower.
The Gospel directly parallels Isaiah’s vision. Through Jesus,
God’s power reverses the condition of the man who cannot hear
and therefore cannot speak. All of Jesus’ miracles can be viewed
through the crystal of his death and resurrection. All of his
words and actions are pure colors of that singular clear and pure
crystal. Each healing, saving action, and word is but a manifestation of the great saving action of the Paschal Mystery.
