God of love and compassion, before this season of unrest, we had grown comfortable with thinking of them only as they relate to us - as our parents and spouses, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends. Today, history and circumstance, force us to release them into your care and into our country’s service. We pray for them and bless them in your name. Grant them your protection and a safe return home. Amen. CORs Don’t forget Dad! O or Granddad! or Step-Dad! Page Three As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. The children will be spending more time enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Please, be careful as you drive through the neighborhood. Children, in their enthusiasm for play, are not always as vigilant about “Stopping, Looking, and Listening” before they cross the streets. Have a blessed, happy, healthy and safe summer. Is it difficult for you to get up and down the aisle at Communion time to receive Holy Communion? Would you like to have a pew reserved for you in the front of the church so that a minister of the Eucharist could bring Communion to you? These are questions that were raised at our last meeting of the Pastoral Staff. If this issue affects you... If you feel there is a need to have an area set aside for people who use a wheelchair, a walker or a cane in order to get around, then please call Wendy Braunsdorf at the rectory (622-5900 ext. 238) and let her know so that she may communicate your thoughts and suggestions to the rest of the staff at the next staff meeting in early June. May God bless you and keep you in His love always. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Last weekend the people of St. Ferdinand Parish contributed $11,328.04 in the regular offertory collection. Obviously this is a very low total, particularly for the first Sunday of the month. For the past four weekends we have experienced significantly lower collections. Some of the reason for this could be that people have First Communions, Weddings and Graduations to attend. The summer is approaching quickly. Vacations and picnics and other summertime activities will impact on Mass attendance. Churches always experience lower collections in the summer. For many years we have made up for the summer collections with the minor feast days and greater Mass attendance in Lent. This year our financial good news has been the participation of many families in our Sharing Christ’s Gifts capital campaign; but the bad news has been our consistent struggle to reach our weekly offertory goal, even in the seasons of the year that we have had high parishioner participation. Last Sunday’s collection was the lowest since a snowy weekend in January 1998. Compared to the first weekend in May (the last time we surpassed our weekly goal), on June 1st the collections at the English Masses were down 21%, at Polish Masses 39% and the Italian Mass was down 63%. The recent Memorial Day weekend was almost as low due to the holiday. During May our offertory collection deficit is nearly $11,000. We are actually fortunate that we have not had to use the air conditioning yet during an unseasonably cool spring. Recently Father Cortesi and I have been talking more often about the collection than we ever have in past years. It is clear that a number of cuts will need to be made over this summer as well as for next year. Some of the capital projects will occur this summer because they are being provided for by the millennium campaign and this is the season to do such work. However, the financial outlook for St. Ferdinand’s is no longer as bright as it once was. In recent years we have said that our parish will one day experience the same struggles as our neighboring parishes. This past year has shown us that this day has now arrived. To all of our regular contributors, we are very grateful for your faithful stewardship. If it were not for you, we would have even greater challenges ahead of us than those we are now facing. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager COLLECTION: May 31-June 1, 2003 ENVELOPES: $8,734.60 LOOSE MONEY: $2,593.44 TOTAL Donated: $11,328.04 BUDGET: GOAL$15,000 Amount Over (Under) ($3,671.96) June 8, 2003 Pentecost Sunday St. Ferdinand Parish to Celebrate Corpus Christi The parish observance of the feast of Corpus Christi will be on Sunday, June 22. Our celebration begins with the 12:15 and 12:30 Masses in both Chapel and Church, followed by a neighborhood procession with the Blessed Sacrament, and Benediction. Mass in Chapel will be in Italian, Mass in Church will be in English and Polish. We hope to involve all of our parish’s organizations, our school children, the First Communicants, and all the religious as well as cultural groups that worship as part of the parish community. All are encouraged to participate in this treasure of our Catholic heritage. There is a space in the procession for everyone. Ladies of St. Anne GENERAL MEETING The last affair of the season will be a Luncheon, Card & Bunco Party, with a lot of nice prizes and delicious food. It will be Wednesday, June 11th in Canning Hall at 11:00 a.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling Lorraine scire at 773/283-6480. Reservations will be required and the price is $8>00. Please come and bring a friend. All are welcome. The deadline is June 8th for ordering tickets. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The roots of today’s “birthday of the Church” are in an ancient Jewish festival of springtime harvest, seven weeks after Passover. Now, seven weeks after Easter, our great fifty days of rejoicing come to an end. In the countries where the Church first came to life, this is a time of harvest, and the first fruits appear: apricots and lemons, cherries and strawberries. Even in our gardens, herbs are abundant and asparagus, that close relation of the Easter lily, comes fresh to our tables. The earth is laden with so much new life, and that has always been a sign to Christians of Easter’s glory. Pentecost means “fifty” and our fifty days of Easter joy are complete. This Sunday is a day to savor the glory of Easter once more: picnics and cookouts, walks by the water, time in the garden—are all ways of extending the feast. Notice the paschal candle today, still burning during Mass. Our Easter celebration now complete, the candle will soon be moved to a place near the baptismal font, and be lighted at baptisms and funerals as a silent witness to Christ’s abiding presence. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Page Five COR’s Learning to Relax O Stress is more than an annoyance. It robs you of the joy of life, saps your energy, and opens the door illness and heart disease. But there are many R tothings yo can do to remove stress from your life — and (get to smile!) they are all enjoyable! N Take ready time to smell the roses. We may chuckle at well-worn phrase, but if we all followed its E the advice, we’d be happier, more relaxed people. So the time to stop. Not just at the end of the day R take before collapsing into bed, but throughout the day. Admire the trees that you pass, the shape of the clouds, the gold of the sunrise. Listen to the birds. Idle a bit while you eat to enjoy your meal. The breaks that you take will give you more energy, grater concentration, and a better attitude. Find a little friend. Whatever pet takes your fancy, find one, bring it home, and love it. Pets can lower blood pressure by calming and soothing us, and by making us smile. They listen without interrupting, and offer unconditional live and loyalty to a thoughtful owner. Play it again, Sam. Perhaps it’s the melody. Perhaps it’s the rhythm. Regardless, studies have shown that music has a relaxing effect on stress. So slip in a CD, or turn on the radio to your favorite station. Let the notes bring new harmony to your day. Walk it out. When you’re stressed, your body produces adrenaline — but the adrenaline has nowhere to go. Walking begins getting rid of adrenaline instantly. But don’t wait until you’re stressed to walk: walking regularly gives you time to think through issues, to prepare for difficult days, and to unwind after them. Walking does more than tone your muscles — it reinvigorates your mind. That’s what friends are for. Talk about your troubles to someone who cares for you. Treasure your friends who love you and listen to you without passing judgement. Learn to share all of yourself — your hopes and dreams, sorrows and anxieties. Let your friends share themselves with you in the same way. You’ll soon find that your joys increase and your burdens grow lighter when shared in a circle of friends. "Live so that you wouldn't mind selling your pet parrot to the town gossip." Ostatecznie radoœæ z udanych ¿niw mia³a zamieniæ siê w Nowym Przymierzu w radoœæ z powodu przyjêcia Ducha Œwiêtego i otrzymania Jego darów. Kiedy nadszed³ wreszcie dzieñ piêædziesi¹tnicy, znajdowali siê wszyscy razem na tym samym miejscu. Nagle da³ siê s³yszeæ z nieba szum, jakby uderzenie gwa³townego wichru, i nape³ni³ ca³y dom, w którym przebywali. Duch Œwiêty zjawia siê poœród tych ¿ywio³ów, które towarzyszy³y obecnoœci Boga w Starym Testamencie: wichru i ognia. Ogieñ wystêpuje w Piœmie œwiêtym jako przenikaj¹cy wszystko mi³oœci¹ i oczyszczaj¹cy ¿ywio³. Obrazy te pomagaj¹ nam lepiej poznaæ dzia³anie Ducha Œwiêtego w naszych duszach. Ogieñ daje równie¿ œwiat³o i oznacza now¹ jasnoœæ, z jak¹ Duch Œwiêty pozwala zrozumieæ naukê Jezusa Chrystusa. Duch Œwiêty prowadzi do pe³nego zrozumienia prawdy nauczanej przez Chrystusa: “a wreszcie przez zes³anie Ducha prawdy objawienie doprowadzi³ do koñca i do doskona³oœci oraz œwiadectwem Bo¿ym potwierdzi³”. W Starym Testamencie dzia³anie Ducha Œwiêtego czêsto okreœla siê jako “tchnienie”. Wyra¿a ono delikatnoœæ i równoczeœnie si³ê mi³oœci Bo¿ej. Gwa³towny wicher w dniu June 8, 2003 Zielonych Œwi¹tek wyra¿a now¹ si³ê z jak¹ Mi³oœæ Bo¿a wkracza do Koœcio³a i do dusz. Dzia³anie Ducha Œwiêtego wywo³a³o w uczniach i ich s³uchaczach taki podziw, ¿e zdumieli siê wszyscy, pe³ni mi³oœci i radoœci. Modlitwa o siedem darów Ducha Œwiêtego Duchu Przenajœwiêtszy, racz mi udzieliæ daru m¹droœci, abym zawsze umiejêtnie rozró¿nia³ dobro od z³a i nigdy dóbr tego œwiat nie przedk³ada³ nad dobro wieczne; daj mi dar rozumu, abym pozna³ prawdy objawione na ile tylko jest to mo¿liwe dla nieudolnoœci ludzkiej; daj mi dar umiejêtnoœci, abym wszystko odnosi³ do Boga, a gardzi³ marnoœciami tego œwiata; daj mi dar rady, abym ostro¿nie postêpowa³ wœród niebezpieczeñstw ¿ycia doczesnego i spe³nia³ wolê Bo¿¹; daj mi dar mêstwa, abym przezwyciê¿a³ pokusy nieprzyjaciela i znosi³ przeœladowania, na które móg³bym byæ wystawiony; daj mi dar pobo¿noœci, abym siê rozmi³owa³ w rozmyœlaniu, w modlitwie i w tym wszystkim, co siê odnosi do s³u¿by Bo¿ej, daj mi dar bojaŸni Bo¿ej, abym ba³ siê Ciebie obraziæ jedynie dla mi³oœci Twojej. Do tych wszystkich darów, o Duchu Œwiêty dodaj mi daru pokuty, abym grzech swoje op³akiwa³, i dar umartwienia, abym zadoœæuczyni³ Boskiej sprawiedliwoœci. Nape³nij Duchu Œwiêty serce moje Bosk¹ mi³oœci¹ i ³ask¹ wytrwania, abym ¿y³ po chrzeœcijañsku i umar³ œmierci¹ œwi¹tobliw¹. Amen. Ostatnia sk³adka niedzielna by³a najni¿sza od stycznia 1999 roku, kiedy to nawiedzi³a nas wielka zima. Porównuj¹c pierwszy weekend w maju (wtedy ostatni raz sk³adka by³a wy¿sza od wymaganego celu) do 1 czerwca kolekta zmniejszy³a siê o 21% podczas Mszy w jêzyku angielskim, 39% podczas Mszy w jêzyku polskim i a¿ 63% podczas Mszy w jêzyku w³oskim. Kolekta podczas weekendu Memorial Day by³a równie¿ bardzo niska. Deficyt jaki powsta³ w miesi¹cu maju wynosi blisko $11,000. Proboszczem czêœciej ni¿ w ubieg³ych latach rozmawiamy o sprawach finansowych. Ten rok pokaza³ nam, ¿e te dni ju¿ nadesz³y. Wszystkim, którzy regularnie wspieraj¹ nasz¹ parafiê jesteœmy bardzo wdziêczni. Gdyby nie wasze wsparcie borykalibyœmy siê z jeszcze wiêkszymi problemami. Daniel P. At The Women’s Center we especially pray for those fathers who have lost a child through abortion and also for those fathers who have enabled their child to be born despite a difficult situation during the mother’s pregnancy. Each year at The Women’s Center we help about 2,000 mothers bring their babies into the world through our counseling, material assistance and friendship. We are able to do this because of our wonderful counselors. Training sessions for counseling volunteers will be held at our Cicero Avenew office on June 14, 21, and 28. Call Judy at 773794-3292 for more information. We have a group of volunteers who have formed a mentoring program for our clients who are new moms. They will provide practical assistance, mothering advice and ongoing support. If you are a mother or grandma and like this idea, call Kathy at 773-794-8807 for more information. We have a very rewarding volunteer opportunity at our Cicero Avenue Family Room helping our clients pick up necessities for their families free of charge. We also need people to sort clothes. For more information, please call Kathy at 773-794-8807. We give material help to our moms. At the present time we are seeking donations of gently used sleepers, onesies, infant undershirts, receiving and larger crib blankets, girls and boys clothing (sizes 6 and up), maternity clothing and women’s extra large clothing. Also needed are new baby bottles and toiletries, shampoo, soap, dish soap and laundry detergent. They also need double strollers, porta-cribs, baby swings, and infant car seats. We cannot accept used toys at this time. If you attend a rummage or garage sale and buy a crib, mattress or bumper pads to donate to our moms, it would be most appreciated. To help us with any of these items or to have them picked up call 773-7941313. St. Ferdinand Parish Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L.
