TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Valentine’s cards have appeared at the shopping mall, but in the Church it is still Christmas. Today’s feast spun off from Epiphany. Originally, a blessing of holy water was an important feature of the Epiphany feast, and in the Greek Church, this was a day for leaping into the sea in grateful recollection of baptism. The gratitude may not be quite as profound among the Orthodox Christians who have to chop holes in the ice to plunge into the waters! Still, there are few better days to celebrate a baptism, and to plunge our hands into the waters of the font. Jesus found the waters of the Jordan irresistible because of what had been done in those waters: people had confessed their sins, and had acknowledged their need to be forgiven and healed. Today, we are the people in the water, and Christ comes to be with us. You won’t have to chop a hole in the ice to celebrate your baptism. A beautiful bowl of water on the table tonight, a toast with sparkling water at dinner, or even a leap into the shower with a sign of the cross and a prayer of thanksgiving will suffice! —Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. January 12, 2003 Baptism of the Lord Contribution Statements In the past, many parishes (including ourselves) mailed out contribution statements at the end of every year. We have found, however, that due to certain changes in IRS tax laws and other circumstances, most people no longer need the information found on these statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again this year. If you still need a contribution statement, please call the rectory after January 15, 2003, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to request one and to arrange a time and date that you will pick it up. Statements will be printed by request only. Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women. Every woman deserves better than abortion. —Campaign for Women Deserve Better, mission statement. This is it! On this feast of the Baptism of the Lord we begin National Vocation Awareness Week. Renew your baptismal commitment as you consider your call to serve God in your particular vocation. Hopefully some of you will hear a call to priesthood or religious life and will be open to that possibility. If you would like assistance, please contact any of the parish priests. Page Three As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. The following chart shows that we almost made our weekly goal on each of the last two weekends. Thank you! As a general rule, whenever we surpass $10,000 from our offertory envelope users we will surpass our weekly goal. For the most part, that is “typical” on the first weekend of the month because those who choose to support us with a monthly contribution will usually do so at the beginning of each month. For the past two months – last month being Thanksgiving weekend and this month being just after the holidays – this has not held true. However, parishioners were very generous at our ten masses on New Year’s Eve and Day, so that helps a great deal to “make up” for those Sundays that we almost make our goal but fall just a little bit short. Our regular Church income is based on your generosity 52 Sundays a year plus separate budget goals for the major feasts of Christmas and Easter. The other holy days of obligation or opportunity help us collectively “make up” for weekly short-falls, just as your individual “make-up” envelopes or increased contributions to the parish after being away on some particular weekend helps us to reach these same financial targets. We are very grateful for your consistent stewardship each and every Sunday and for your special gifts to the Church on our major feasts. Your generosity and commitment to St. Ferdinand’s is how we are able to offer the many ministries, programs and services of the parish to our 11,000 parishioners and our guests throughout the year. Once again we pray God’s blessings upon you and your family throughout 2003! Daniel P. And, their education is the foundation for our future. A Catholic education helps to light the way by focusing on the basics and demanding excellence. But Catholic education sheds light on more than just science or math. It helps instill the self-esteem, respect for others, and real spirituality that tomorrow's adults will need to create a brighter future. The challenges our country has addressed during the past year underscores the importance of having a better knowledge and appreciation of the world community. Catholic schools encourage this understanding. In graduating students who are well educated, good citizens and have a strong commitment to the faith, Catholic schools are making a 'world of difference.' COME AND VISIT ST. FERDINAND PARISH SCHOOL Sunday, January 26, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Tour the building, see some students give performances and demonstrations, meet school board members, view students work, enjoy the fabulous library, art room, science and computer labs, receive registration material, ask questions, etc. All are welcome! Bulletin reminder: All notices for the January 19th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, January 13th. You may drop your bulletin notices off at the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin” or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin notices is [email protected]. Re-lighting the Fire Perhaps each Sunday Morning it is the same routine. You wake up, get out of bed, shower, shave, and dress for mass. You wake the kids head with the family to your mass of choice. You sit in the same pew each week and sit next to the same people who's names you do not know. Finally, after the hour-long mass, you head with your family home to begin the rest of your regular Sunday morning activities. Like anything else in our lives, our faith can become somewhat of a routine. And as with any routine, the more we repeat it, the less it truly touches our lives. However, we know truly that the Love of the Father is not something to take for granted as a simple routine... it is truly a fire that must BURN in our hearts! When was the last time you truly felt the Father's boundless love for us so strongly that you wished you could find the closest mountain top and proclaim His glory in a loud voice? When was the last time Jesus' love touched you so much that you felt totally empowered to live the kind of life He wants? If you are a parish man and have never felt this way (or simply want to feel this way again), I strongly encourage you to attend the next CRHP weekend. Most men who have previously attended CRHP have described their experience as truly life changing. CRHP gives you, not only the chance to truly feel this burning love for God that we so desire, but also to meet those men in the parish you we see at mass every Sunday, but have never met personally. The next CRHP weekend is scheduled for February 8 - 9, 2003. This is an experience you will not soon forget and will never regret. Come and re-light the fire within you. A moment can change your mind; a weekend can change your life. Contact Ron Pasko at 773-636-1299 for details. W nowym uk³adzie odmawiamy tajemnice radosne w poniedzia³ki i soboty, bolesne we wtorki i pi¹tki, chwalebne w œrody i niedziele, zaœ tajemnice œwiat³a w czwartki. Dzisiejsi uczniowie s¹ liderami nowego stulecia. Zmiany naszego kraju w ostatnim roku podkreœlaj¹ wa¿noœæ lepszego poznania i zrozumienia ludzkoœci. Katolickie szko³y zachêcaj¹ do zrozumienia tego. Poprzez absolwentów, którzy s¹ wysoko edukowani, s¹ dobrymi obywatelami i s¹ zaanga¿owani w ¿ycie wiar¹. 222. SPRAWOZDANIE FINANSOWE Poni¿ej przedstawiona jest druga czêœæ sprawozdania z ostatniej niedzieli grudnia i pierwszej niedzieli stycznia 2003; w zesz³ym tygodniu przedstawiliœmy raport z³o¿ony z czwartej niedzieli adwentu i Bo¿ego Narodzenia. Wasza hojnoœæ i oddanie siê parafii œw. Ferdynanda sprawia, ¿e mo¿emy oferowaæ wiele pos³ug i programów dla 11,000 parafian i goœci w ci¹gu ca³ego roku. To begin his public ministry, Jesus presented himself to be baptized by John the Baptist, and God manifested Jesus as the divine Son. Because we associate baptism with the forgiveness of sins, the idea that the sinless Jesus would undergo baptism seems out of place. The evangelists must have thought the same; as a whole, they downplay the incident. But the baptism of Jesus had nothing to do with forgiveness; it had everything to do with manifestation. It was a new beginning because it publicly revealed Jesus’ identity, and that testimony came not from just any witness but from God. Three incidents in the Bible are traditionally called the “epiphany” events or the “manifestations” of Jesus, newly arrived on the biblical scene: the visit of the magi, the baptism, and the miracle at the wedding in Cana. Prior to 1969 we heard all three of these Scriptures in successive weeks: Jan. 6, Jan. 13, and on the following Sunday. All three stories form a unit because they progressively reveal the identity, the authority and the power of Jesus. In today’s calendar the Sunday readings spread over a three-year cycle. On the Baptism of the Lord we hear a different evangelist’s account each year. Only in year C does the following Sunday feature the Gospel of the wedding at Cana to unify the three celebrations. In the United States we celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday. But in countries where the Epiphany is a holy day of obligation, it is celebrated on Jan. 6. In the United States, the Baptism of the Lord is usually the Sunday after the Epiphany, but if Epiphany comes late, falling on Jan. 6 or 7, the Baptism of the Lord falls goes to the next day, Jan.7 or 8, a Monday, in order to make room for the weeks of ordinary time.
