This month Lu marks twenty years of full-time work as Director of our Christian Outreach Program (COR). These twenty years followed eight years of part-time work (along with two or three days a week for the past several years) in the Rectory as one of our Receptionists. Lu will officially retire at the end of June, however, we are pleased to say that Mrs. Caravette will return next September to continue as the Director of COR on a part-time basis. Lu will be in her office in the Convent building on Mondays and Wednesdays next year overseeing the COR programs which include our efforts with our Sharing Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, our food pantry which is open on Wednesday mornings, and our Ministry of Praise (homebound parishioners praying for the needs of our community). We are grateful to Lu for her continued commitment to the needy of our community and OLL, as well as the elderly of our parish. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, June 19-20, 2004: Envelopes: $ 8,831.60 Loose Cash: $ 3,773.08 TOTAL DONATIONS: $12,604.68 Amount over/(under) weekly budget: ($2,395.32) Last weekend our Sunday envelope total went up nearly $800 due largely to parishioners “making up” their offertory support. We really appreciate your commitment to St. Ferdinand’s when you increase your donations after being away from the parish. It helps to decrease our evergrowing parish deficit. This Sunday we end our fiscal year. I’m glad to see this budget year pass, primarily because as we only reached our weekly offertory goal twice (Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday) during this period. Actually, we have had difficulty reaching our weekly goal since May 2003. We have made many cuts in our projected expenses for the coming year that begins this Thursday. Some cost reductions have already been made and others will be accomplished by September 1st. Even with those cuts in mind, our adjusted offertory goal will be at least $13,000 per week. In September, when we revise our projections to the actual final budget, that figure may have to be increased. Over the summer weeks, when many parishioners are away, we typically experience a deficit. This is why “making up” for missed Sundays and including your offertory support in your personal budget each and every month of the year is so important to the financial situation of our parish. In the fall we will present a complete report concerning the budget and the financial difficulties we have experienced in the recent past. We will also present a midcampaign update concerning Sharing Christ’s Gifts, which is the significant “good news” concerning our parish finances. Thank you for all that you do for St. Ferdinand Parish, and have a safe and restful summer. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager Bulletin reminder: All notices for the July 4th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 AM on Monday. You may bring your bulletin notices to the rectory in an envelope labeled “bulletin”; you may e-mail them to [email protected]; or you may fax them to 622-5903. As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual Prayer ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Page Four Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 27, 2004 FIRST READING: 1 Kings 19:16b, 19–21 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11 SECOND READING: Galatians 5:1, 13–18 GOSPEL: Luke 9:51–62 On the Cheap It never works. If we do something on the cheap, we end up cheating someone, usually ourselves. Wallpaper won’t mask the deep crack in the plaster. Cramming might get us past the test, but we won’t remember much the day after. A long report won’t make up for a bad one. Today a real, true, genuine call awaits a response in kind. No cheating. • Comment Take, for example, the call of Elisha. He understood the meaning of the cloak that was so unexpectedly laid upon his shoulders right there in the open field. He felt its weight, and more. The mantle and burden of office were on his shoulders. Elisha knew that his life was going to take an abrupt turn. One can understand his plea for time to go home to tell his parents good-bye. This passing from farmer to future prophet was a surprise. It must have been breathtaking. Having received the abrupt permission of Elijah, Elisha went off to tie up the loose ends. His response to his call is never in doubt, for Elisha returns and dramatically disposes of all traces of his former life. Having done so, he begins his apprenticeship. In today’s Gospel we see Jesus begin his journey to Jerusalem, where “the days for [his] being taken up were fulfilled.” This journey of his life is complicated by barriers of ageold enmity. Jesus has to seek permission from the Samaritans to pass through their land. This onerous busi- ness was the result of a long-simmering resentment between the Samaritans and the Jews. The Samaritans first moved into Israel after the Jews were forcibly exiled to Babylon in 721 B.C. These interlopers intermarried and had for themselves a home and a mixed kind of Jewish religion. After the people returned from Babylon, they found these Samaritans on their land, and great resentments simmered and smoldered. Not surprisingly, permission was not given, so Jesus and his apostles had to take the longer route to get to Jerusalem, where he was determined to go. Nothing would stand in the way of his mission. As we read on in this Gospel, the connection with the first reading comes clear. The disciples are to follow Jesus unequivocally. He makes this clear to those who asked, lest they be dreamy about his mission. Jesus’ response sounds unduly harsh to our ears. What are we to make of this? Not even Elijah was this harsh, when Elisha asked permission to see his parents one last time. But the two inquiring men were not Elisha, that’s for sure. Jesus must have detected in these two wannabe disciples a lack of enthusiasm or any sense of the cost of discipleship. His blunt response reinforces the sense of determination we see in the opening words of this Scripture passage. We see Jesus begin his journey to Jerusalem by the long route. Samaritan intransigence was no obstacle to Jesus’ work. Wishy-washy discipleship was an obstacle. • Reflection So was misleading discipleship. In the second reading, unsettling ideas about discipleship upset the fragile apple cart at Galatia. Paul had every reason to assume this community was well on its way. When trouble arose, he must have thought, “If it isn’t one thing, it’s another.” The thing today is that the people of Galatia were being taught by misguided “Judaizers,” a name given to those who taught that Christians had to abide by Jewish custom and law. This kind of “piling on” of old laws threw the Galatians into some confusion. Paul urges them to resist these free-floating ideas that serve only to fragment and wear down the community and return it to the endless round of debates about law-keeping. He makes it clear that their baptism not only freed them from the law, it freed them for something. They were called and committed to love freely, serve freely, put the needs of the human spirit first. They were urged to love first and then do what love demands. At a later time, Saint Augustine would put it simply: “Love, and do what you will.” Copyright © 2003, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. June 27, 2004 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine ON MISSING LETTERS, AND FIRST COMMUNION Copyright 2004 by John B. Reynolds (www.jrwrites.com) The First Communicants at our parish made a large display board recently in honor of their big event. I'm sure the Director of Religious Education helped. The children put their names, pictures, and requests for prayers on circles cut from purple paper. These "grapes" were then affixed to the board along with the message (comprised of green cut-out letters): “We Are One with Jesus; First Communion Class of 2004.” The board stayed in our parish hall for a while, but then the DRE asked me and another guy to move it into the church and hang it on the wall. One grape fell off in transit and had to be reaffixed. I didn't know it at the time, but this was a sign of things to come. The crowd seemed bigger than usual the following weekend for Family Mass with several people in the back having to push in along the display board. After Mass, my family and I went to the parish hall for eats. We were chatting among ourselves when a parishioner came up to me to say that one of the letters on the display board was missing. The “R” in “FIRST COMMUNION.” I told him thanks for letting me know, but I can't say that I got too concerned about it. My wife said that she had noticed the missing letter, too, as did my son. And no more than a minute or two later, Paul said he knew where the missing letter was. I asked him where. "On that guy's elbow..." he said. Following Paul's nod, I saw a guy halfway across the room with a green “R” on his left elbow. Confident that this was the letter we were after, I approached the man and asked him if he knew was wearing an “R” on his sleeve. He gave me one of those looks that people often give me when I ask what seems to me to be a reasonable question, then he looked to his elbow. His surprise said it all. I told him about the missing letter. He said he was sorry for taking it by accident. Then he turned it over to me; I turned it over to my wife, and, when we were ready to leave, Gail took the errant “R” and returned it to its proper place while I got the car. End of story. But not quite... All of today's readings deal with the cost of discipleship, and this is demonstrated best, I think, in the Gospel. Upon hearing Christ's call, one man says, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father;” another, “...but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” In both cases, Jesus, makes it clear that we can't have it both ways. Like the man carrying the “R” on his elbow, we have to carry Jesus around with us when we leave his table. We have to make him such a part of us that we, perhaps, don't even know that he is there, but we follow his call to discipleship just the same. I don't know about wearing our “R”s on our sleeves, but when we put on Christ, we are one with Jesus, too. Letter perfect, you might say. Just like the First Communion Class of 2004.
