THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
January 9, 2011
A voice came from the heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
– Matthew 3:17
This is my Beloved Son. This
Sunday’s celebration of the
Baptism of the Lord closes the
Christmas season. In the scriptures
we see one more epiphany, or
manifestation, of the Spirit of God
in Jesus–but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child.
Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his
prophetic mission and the messianic age.
Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen
Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the
Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in
the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in
water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes
when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from
heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved
Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
The second collection this weekend is for the
Utility and Energy Costs
The second collection next weekend is in support of the
Catholic University of America
CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
The Catholic University of America is the national university of
the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington,
D.C. It provides an academically rigorous education guided by
Catholic intellectual tradition to 6,000 students every year. Every
dollar given directly supports financial aid for students from
dioceses across the country, including ours. Please be generous.
Bishop McManus writes “....Students at Catholic University
receive personalized attention in a wide range of academic
programs, combining an excellent liberal arts curriculum with
courses in their major fields of study. Grounded in the philosophy
of the Catholic intellectual tradition, these students are well
prepared for success in life and ready to make a difference in
today’s world. I encourage you to be generous in this special
collection.”

St. Joseph School. It is with deep gratitude that we acknowledge
a donation of $2000 given by John and Louise Hester towards the
purchase of a security system to be placed outside the school. To
prevent any damage to the school and environment it was
suggested by various town officials and our Parish Council to
install a surveillance camera around the school. This is an
expensive project but unfortunately the necessity of our time as we
have to deal with individuals of the neighborhood who do not
respect the property of others. We greatly appreciate the concern of
Mr. and Mrs. Hester for the safety of our neighborhood and
dedication to St. Joseph School. May your New Year gift be
rewarded by God.
Anonymous Donation. We are truly blessed with people who
sincerely have the best interests of our parish at heart. I was
humbled by a donation of $500 to the Basilica given toward the
extra expenses for Father Gregory. The donor appreciates the help
provided by Father Gregory to the parish and to me and I am truly
grateful for this concern.

TAX NEWS
Individuals who have IRA’s and are 70 1/2 are required to take
a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Bill H.R.4853 signed
into Law on December 17, 2010 retroactively extends the IRA
charitable rollover from Jan. 1, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2011. The
IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers starting at age 70 ½ to
direct up to $100,000 per year from their individual retirement
accounts (IRA’s) to eligible charities without counting the
distributions as income for tax purposes. H.R. 4853 allows
taxpayers who make IRA charitable rollover gifts in January
2011 to count those gifts towards the 2010 tax year (the
$100,000 limit still applies).
The Charitable Gift Bank Check MUST be made directly TO
THE CHARITY NOT TO YOU!!!
Your RMD can be included as part of your charitable donation
amount and therefore it also does NOT have to be declared as
income for tax purposes.
Banks do NOT typically penalize distribution amounts which
exceed your RMD amount even though the monies are being
withdrawn prior to the maturity date of your IRA CD. You may
still have from 2 to 4 years remaining on your IRA CD’s and will
NOT be penalized for early withdrawal by most banks.
I encourage parishioners who are in this bracket to make a
donation to the Basilica or the School this month.
CHRISTMAS CAROLS
From time immemorial songs and music were performed in
honor of a particular distinguished persons. It is difficult to imagine
Christmas without music. In this season we are surrounded by
Christmas programs, caroling parties, musicals, Christmas shows
etc. In Church we sing of longings for Christ’s coming, in schools
we sing of longing for Santa’s coming, and in the malls we sing
Christmas carols for customers’ coming. At Christmas the world is
caught in awe and words alone seem to be inadequate to encompass
the immensity of the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God
in human nature.
The large participation at Christmas Masses indicate that people
appreciated and enjoyed our Christmas carols, the musical program
performed by the children, the youth and the adult choirs, which
together with the Christmas decorations, intensified the Christmas
spirit. On Sunday, January 16th we will conclude this season of joy
by a concert of Christmas Carols presented by several choirs of the
region: Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Boston, St. John the
Evangelist Parish of Salem, St. Joseph Parish in Central Falls, R.I.
and the Immaculate Conception Parish of Indian Orchard MA and
our two senior choirs. Even the traditional Scrooge could not resist
the spirit of Christmas. The Christmas carols in the simplicity of
their words, and the beautiful melodies, can amplify the human
emotions and revive the Christmas message. We kindly invite all
the parishioners, friends and relatives to come together from 3 to 5
p.m. for this musical concert.
MARRIAGE PREPARATIONS
Those who are planning to enter the Sacrament of Matrimony at
St. Joseph Basilica should be aware of the following requirements:
Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Once a
person turns 21 years of age, should be registered in his/her own
name unless attending a university or college. Belonging to the
parish by formal registration is necessary for a priest to perform the
wedding ceremony. The weddings are performed on Saturdays
from 8 to 1p.m., and on Sundays after 1 p.m. You should contact
the pastor a year in advance of the planned wedding date. You
should not contract a civil marriage prior to the sacramental in
Church. Please do not make any deposits at your reception hall
before you secure the date with the Pastor.
BAPTISMS
The sacrament of Baptism is so important that it warrants a brief
catechesis for the next several Sundays. Baptism is the rite of entry
into the Church and the right to participate in other sacraments.
There is an ancient custom to have a godparent who provides the
witness of the faith of the person being baptized or in the case of
an infant the godparent will help the child to persevere in faith and
live his or her life as a Christian. Therefore, the sponsor has to be
Page 4
carefully selected to assist the parents in their duties as teachers and
educators in faith. For adults one sponsor is enough although a second
one is not excluded and for babies each child should have a godfather
and a godmother. The sponsor has to be over 16 years of age, a Catholic
who has been confirmed and has received the sacrament of the
Eucharist and is a practicing Catholic. The sponsor cannot be the
mother or father of the child. A person who is baptized but does not
belong to the Catholic Church cannot be a sponsor of a baptism but can
be a witness along with the Catholic sponsor. The parents when
planning the baptism, should determine the level of faith of the
proposed sponsor and discuss it with the parish priest(s).
CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP
Wii Bowling at Christopher Heights. The Youth Group will have
another Wii Bowling contest with the residents of Christopher Heights
on Tuesday, January 18th from 6-7:30 p.m. If you are interested in
participating, please contact Mrs. Valcour.
PARISH MEETINGS
Festival Meeting. On Tuesday, January 11th, there will be a Festival
meeting at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. We kindly ask the
chairpersons, parishioners, parents, teachers, Home School Association
etc. to come to plan and shape the vision of our 2011 festival. We will
discuss new ideas and initiatives, and review past successful booths to
make this event enjoyable and profitable for St. Joseph School.
Finance Board Meeting on Wednesday, January 12th at 12 noon in the
rectory.
Parish Council Meeting on Wednesday, January 19th at 7 p.m. in the
Conference Room.
VOCATION AWARENESS
This week we celebrate National Vocation Awareness. Let us pray for
vocations to the priesthood, religious life and lay ministry to the Catholic
Church throughout our country and especially in St. Joseph Basilica. Presently
we have 26 men in our Vocation’s program. Nine of these seminarians were
born and raised in the Diocese of Worcester, 14 from Colombia, 1 from Poland,
1 from Ghana and 1 from Kenya. To continue to assign priests to every parish
in the Diocese over the next few decades, the present number of seminarians
(26) should be nearly tripled (75). With the support of priestly vocations by
families and parish communities, this goal is possible.
NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
At the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, January 9th at the 9:30 Mass we will
celebrate National Migration Week. Renewing Hope Seeking Justice is the
main theme of this year’s celebration with emphasis on families. Catholic
culture around the world is rich with diversity of traditions and liturgical
celebrations.
