JAZZ PERFORMANCE IN THE CENTER
As the Mardi Gras celebrations continue, we will host
our own celebration not in far away New Orleans, but
right on the stage of the parish center. Please join us for a
jazz performance of Old Dog Blue Band, a trio of piano,
saxophone and drums. The band specializes in a unique
interpretation of American folk songs and originals.
Wine, cheese and snacks will be served at the concert. No
tickets necessary, but a suggested donation of $10 to
cover the expenses is welcome. When? Sunday, February

FEAST OF FAITH
The Opening Prayer
At the conclusion of the Introductory Rites of the
Mass, the presider says or chants the words “Let us pray,”
followed by the Opening Prayer. This prayer is also called
a “collect” because it gathers or “collects” the prayers of
the entire assembly into one. The Roman collects that we
pray in our liturgy -noted for the brevity, clarity, and conciseness of the Latin originals - date from a variety of periods. Some are quite new; others reach back more than a
thousand years. They are truly treasures of our tradition.
The Opening Prayer can be divided into four main
parts: 1) the invitation, or “Let us pray”; 2) the silence
that follows, during which each member of the assembly
lifts up before God his or her own prayers; 3) the collect
itself, spoken or sung by the priest; 4) and finally the
Amen, by which the assembly says, “yes,” “may it be so,”
making the prayer their own.
The collect itself almost always follows the same pattern. It begins with an invocation to God. A petition follows, usually very general. We ask for health, strength,
wisdom, grace, forgiveness, faith, awareness. Every collect concludes by offering the prayer to God through Jesus Christ. With the Amen of the assembly, the Introductory Rites of the Mass come to an end.

FOOLISHNESS
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Sometimes the idea of repentance seems oldfashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for
real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings.
We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no
revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve
heard that message before, of course, so we might forget
how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.”
Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though.
Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a
fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in
the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).
This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no
resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact,
offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand
over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who
sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good.
“So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father
is perfect” (5:48).
Olive oil looms large in the vocabulary of baptism. There
are other oils in the pantry closet, from grape seed to
safflower to canola, but only olives yield the proper
meanings. Olives don’t just happen; they are cultivated,
nurtured, pruned, and fussed over; they are a sign of
human and divine cooperation. Olives can thrive in poor
soil, but they cannot survive without human ingenuity,
planting shoots and pruning branches. They can’t be
popped from a tree and munched like apples: they are
inedible without long curing; neither do they yield their
oil to hand pressure alone, but only to huge stone mills.
Abundant patience is needed as sediment sinks to the
bottom of storage barrels and pure oil rises to the surface.
Olive oil is a byproduct of peace: war keeps
harvesters, planters, and pruners within city walls and
turns millers into soldiers. To obtain oil from olives you
need vast measures of hope, patience, faith, and
ingenuity. Olive oil is a sign of God’s bounty and the way
we human beings collaborate with God to bring about
impossibly wonderful results. It is creation at its finest.
Some people give chocolate eggs for Easter; perhaps
olive oil is a more appropriate gift!

Kiedy Bóg wkracza w nasze życie, dokonuje w nim
czegoś zupełnie nowego. Grzeszymy, upadamy,
a oddalając się od Boga, wkraczamy w pustkę
i ciemność. On zaś otwiera przed nami drogę na pustyni,
przekreśla nasze występki, zapomina grzechy. Czyni to
wszystko przez swego Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa, i przez
Ducha Świętego. Jako Bóg wierny, spełnia swe obietnice
i uzdalnia swą łaską nasze serca, by mogły odpowiedzieć

NECEDAD
A veces la noción del arrepentimiento parece
anticuada, ingenua y hasta necia. Pero si buscas locura, la
encontrarás en las lecturas de hoy.
Comencemos con Levítico y la amonestación “no te
vengues ni guardes rencor” (Levítico 19:18). Por supuesto
que hemos escuchado este mensaje antes, y por eso puede
que olvidemos lo alejado que está de las “realidades
prácticas de la vida”, contra las que nos advierte san
Pablo. Será mejor que quien se considere sabio “se haga
ignorante”, porque “la sabiduría de este mundo es
ignorancia ante Dios” (1 Corintios 3:18, 19).
Esta “locura” continúa en el Evangelio: “No hagan
resistencia al hombre malo” (Mateo 5:39). De hecho,
presenta la otra mejilla, si has sido golpeado. Dale tu
abrigo al que te pide la camisa. Sé como Dios que manda
el sol y la lluvia sobre justos e injustos. “Sean perfectos”,
dice Jesús, “como su Padre celestial es perfecto” (5:48).
