BLESSING OF THE THROATS ON THE FEAST
DAY OF ST. BLASÉ, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd
Following the 9:00 am Eucharist this coming Friday,
we will have the traditional blessing of the throats on the
Feast Day of St. Blasé. St. Blase was bishop of Sebaste
(Armenia) and was martyred, probably early in the fourth
century. Devotion to him spread throughout the Church
during the Middle Ages.
FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS
In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words
will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet
will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into
God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching
and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority
of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God.
The whole history of our church is filled with both true
and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that
Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he
wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous.
We also learn from him, in his desert temptation
confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote
scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we
hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes,
who held the official positions of religious authority in his
day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true
prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The
psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our
hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will
be God’s very words filling our mouths.

prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for
you” (Deuteronomy 18:15-20).

Gospel - The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching
(Mark 1:21-28).
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Forty days after Christmas, this week’s ancient feast of
the Presentation of the Lord is an extension of the shining
days of Christ’s coming into the depths of winter. This is
the day when, for a thousand years, the Church has
blessed a year’s supply of candles. In many places, a
procession forms outside the church. The core memory is
of Simeon and Anna’s meeting with the infant Jesus and
his parents outside the temple on the fortieth day after the
child’s birth, and the delight of going to the table of the
Lord for the Eucharist, a foretaste of our final meeting
with Christ.
For some Christians, today is known as “The
Meeting,” suggesting not only the encounter in the
temple, but also our assembly at the Lord’s table and our
longing for the kingdom. One story suggests that the
commotion made by so many candle-bearing, hymnsinging faithful in the wintry fields of Germany on their
joyful way to Mass stirred the badger from hibernation to
examine this promise of springtime. The interrupted nap
of the groundhog is amazingly linked to the light of Christ
driving away the shadows of the world’s darkness. This
beautiful feast only rarely falls on a Sunday. What better
reason could there be for candles at dinner tonight?

4 NIEDZIELA OKRESU ZWYKŁEGO
Pan, Bóg twój, wzbudzi ci proroka spośród braci

Właśnie o to prosiłeś Pana, Boga swego, na Horebie,
w dniu zgromadzenia: Niech więcej nie słucham

Dobrze powiedzieli. Wzbudzę im proroka spośród

W mieście Kafarnaum Jezus w szabat wszedł do
synagogi i nauczał. Zdumiewali się Jego nauką:
uczył ich bowiem jak ten, który ma władzę, a nie jak
uczeni w Piśmie. Był właśnie w synagodze człowiek
opętany przez ducha nieczystego. Zaczął on wołać:
Czego chcesz od nas, Jezusie Nazarejczyku?
Przyszedłeś nas zgubić. Wiem, kto jesteś: Święty
Boży. Lecz Jezus rozkazał mu surowo: Milcz i wyjdź
z niego. Wtedy duch nieczysty zaczął go targać i z
głośnym krzykiem wyszedł z niego. A wszyscy się
zdumieli, tak że jeden drugiego pytał: Co to jest?
Nowa jakaś nauka z mocą. Nawet duchom
nieczystym rozkazuje i są Mu posłuszne. I wnet
rozeszła się wieść o Nim wszędzie po całej
Mk 1, 21-28
okolicznej krainie galilejskiej..
REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ NIEDIZELNYCH...
W Starym Testamencie lud Izraela lękał się
słuchać Boga na Horebie, dlatego Bóg powołał
proroków, aby głosili Jego słowo. W Nowym zaś
On sam przemawia do ludzkich serc przez swego
Syna – Wcielone Słowo. Jest to „nowa nauka z
mocą”, głoszona przez Tego, „który ma władzę”,
niosąca światło i wolność uwięzionym w niewoli
grzechu. Otwórzmy dziś na nią nasze serca, abyśmy
mogli doświadczyć zbawienia od zła oraz nowego
życia w wolności dzieci Bożych.

LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura - Moisés le habló a todo el pueblo
diciendo: “El Señor Dios hará surgir en medio de ustedes
un profeta como yo” (Deuteronomio 18:15-20).

corazones (Salmo 95 [94]).
Segunda lectura - Hermanos y hermanas: Yo quisiera
que ustedes vivieran sin preocupaciones

Evangelio - Los oyentes quedaron asombrados de sus
palabras, pues enseñaba como quien tiene autoridad
(Marcos 1:21-28).
FALSOS PROFETAS, VERDADEROS PROFETAS
Hoy nos enteramos en Deuteronomio de que las
palabras de Dios llenarán la boca de un profeta verdadero,
pero un profeta falso, en cierto modo, pone meras
palabras mortales en boca de Dios. En el Evangelio según
San Marcos, vemos las enseñanzas de Jesús y la curación
como obra de un verdadero profeta, uno lleno de la
autoridad de la propia voz de Dios, el Santo de Dios.
La historia de nuestra Iglesia está llena de profetas,
verdaderos y falsos. Pero en el Evangelio de hoy nos
enteramos de que la fama de Jesús se extendió porque
enseñaba con autoridad; su autoridad no procedía de que Él
fuera popular o famoso. También aprendemos de Él, en sus
enfrentamientos en el desierto cuando fue tentado por
Satanás, que cualquiera puede citar la Sagrada Escritura,
incluso en contra de los propósitos de Dios. Y hoy nos
enteramos de que su autoridad no era como la de los
escribas, que ocupaban los cargos oficiales de autoridad
religiosa en aquella época. Nuestro trabajo consiste en
hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo para discernir los verdaderos
profetas que hay en medio de nosotros, y también nosotros
mismos ser verdaderos profetas. El salmista nos dice cómo
hacerlo: no endurecer nuestro corazón cuando Dios habla.
Si de verdad escuchamos a Dios, serán Sus palabras Dios
las que llenarán nuestra boca.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El día 2 de febrero se celebrará la Candelaria. En este día se
conmemora la purificación de María, cuarenta días después de
que dio a luz a Jesús. Candelaria viene del verbo latín candere
(brillar), de allí la palabra candela, o sea, veladora. La
celebración de la Purificación de María y la Presentación del
Niño Jesús en el templo se conmemora con la bendición de
todas las velas y veladoras que se van a usar durante el año.
Esto se hace con la esperanza de que nunca venga a faltar la
luz, tanto material como espiritual, en las casas de los fieles.
Los cristianos, como Simeón en el templo, pueden decir que
ellos también han visto la salvación; Jesús la verdadera luz que
brilla en brazos de María.
En Puerto Rico tradicionalmente esta fiesta se celebra con la
quemazón de los árboles de navidad, basura, palos, cosas viejas,
etc. Esta costumbre subraya el deseo de dejar atrás todo lo malo
para que llegue lo bueno; es decir terminar con la oscuridad
para que brille la luz.
