TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

SENIOR HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
Last week’s “Treasure” noted that the official headgear of the pope, the tiara, has been set aside in favor of
the miter. Although Pope Paul VI had a coronation in
1963 to begin his ministry as pope, he later gave his tiara
away to the Catholics of the United States as a stimulus to
end poverty. He took care to say that he was not abolishing the tradition of coronation, but his successor, Pope
John Paul I, decided to have an inauguration to begin his
tragically short term. His successors have chosen inauguration as well. Pope John Paul II felt that a return to the
coronation custom would be inappropriate since the
Church was mourning the sudden death of a man already
nicknamed “The Laughing Pope.”
So the end of coronations came about not because
Paul VI gave the crown away. There are more than twenty
tiaras on hand at the Vatican. One is used every year to
crown the famous statue of St. Peter, whose sandaled foot
has been eroded to a bright shine by the hands of millions
of pilgrims. Today, it is left to the individual pope to decide whether he will begin his formal reign with a coronation or an inauguration. Pope Benedict chose an inauguration, as did Pope Francis.

VALUES TO LIVE BY
Today’s scriptures contain some catch phrases that are
still quite familiar in our world: “All is vanity,” and “Eat,
drink, and be merry” are both scriptural in origin. In the
same way that it is easy to pray last week’s Lord’s Prayer
thoughtlessly, it is easy to let the potent passages of
scripture that are built on these common sayings glide
right off our slick ears.
Last week’s scriptures instructed us to listen
attentively to the Lord, so that we might pray carefully.
Our listening and our prayer are intimately connected. In
the same way, this week we learn that our values and our
living are connected as well. It has become quite common
to ask, “Do you own your possessions or do they own
you?” Like the familiar maxims from today’s readings,
we might be tempted to quote this saying flippantly, and
think that in the quoting of it we have truly considered it,
perhaps lived it. Not true, Qoheleth, Paul, and Jesus tell
us today. It is not wrong to treasure or cherish things of
earth or of our own humanity; it is only wrong when those
things we cherish are not of God, are not of the selfgiving Christ.
SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH
STEIN) (1891-1942)

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister
Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith
Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch
bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into
custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish,
but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth
led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as
professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of
Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then
declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1,
1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation into
the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the
feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered
the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a
convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the
Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil
the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers
of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church.

Pana, kiedy z uczty weselnej powróci, aby mu zaraz
otworzyć, gdy nadejdzie i zakołacze. Szczęśliwi owi
słudzy, których pan zastanie czuwających, gdy nadejdzie.
Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Przepasze się i każe im
zasiąść do stołu, a obchodząc będzie im usługiwał. Czy o
drugiej, czy o trzeciej straży przyjdzie, szczęśliwi oni, gdy

na czas wydzielił jej żywność? Szczęśliwy ten sługa,
którego pan powróciwszy zastanie przy tej czynności.
Prawdziwie powiadam wam: Postawi go nad całym
swoim mieniem. Lecz jeśli sługa ów powie sobie w duszy:
Mój pan ociąga się z powrotem, i zacznie bić sługi i
służące, a przy tym jeść, pić i upijać się, to nadejdzie pan
tego sługi w dniu, kiedy się nie spodziewa, i o godzinie,
której nie zna; każe go ćwiartować i z niewiernymi
wyznaczy mu miejsce. Sługa, który zna wolę swego pana,
a nic nie przygotował i nie uczynił zgodnie z jego wolą,
otrzyma wielką chłostę. Ten zaś, który nie zna jego woli i
uczynił coś godnego kary, otrzyma małą chłostę. Komu
wiele dano, od tego wiele wymagać się będzie; a komu
wiele zlecono, tym więcej od niego żądać będą.

DADO MUCHO
“Al que mucho se le da, se le exigirá mucho” (Lucas
12:48). ¡Uf! ¡Al menos el Señor no me ha confiado mucho!
A Dios gracias que la obra del Reino de Dios en la tierra ha
sido confiado a otra persona. Esta debe ser la “buena
noticia” del Evangelio de hoy, ¿correcto? ¡Incorrecto!
En la mentalidad de “no ser menos que nadie”,
podemos prepararnos para compararnos con los que tienen
más o con quienes se les ha dado más, aún de parte de Dios
mismo. Desafortunadamente, en ninguna parte dice Jesús:
“No mucho se esperará de aquéllos a los que se les da sólo
un poquito”. A cada uno, de manera singular, se le ha dado
algo, algún don o tesoro que puede emplear en la obra del
Reino de Dios. Es la vocación del discípulo cristiano. Tal
vez parezca que otros han dado más; este tipo de
evaluación no debe ocupar al discípulo. Lo que nos debe
ocupar, a cada uno de nosotros en la vocación para la cual
hemos sido elegidos, es tomar lo que nos ha sido dado y
consagrarlo, para que el Reino de Dios de justicia, gozo,
paz y hermosura siga irrumpiendo en nuestro mundo.
Entonces nos daremos cuenta de que, efectivamente, se nos
ha dado mucho.
