NEW WALKWAY BETWEEN THE PARKVILLE
AND NEWKIRK AVENUES - an update
A heart felt “thank you” to all the parishioners and
their families for a gradual but steady flow of contributions to sponsor our newly completed walkway
between the church and the rectory. So far, we have
raised $3,200 for the purpose. As a reminder, the total cost for the project is a follows: walkway’s labor
& material - $12,000; 3 benches - $600 total; 3
planters - $900 total; steps at the end of the walkway
- labor & material - $2500. Parishioners interested in
sponsoring the endeavor in honor of their loved ones
are asked to contact Father Luke for more details.

If you would like to have a Mass offered for any
intention, please stop by the rectory. We have weekday masses available.
PASTORAL INSTITUTE
The Pastoral Institute of the Diocese is sponsoring a
10-week program of theological study. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in
taking a short-term course of study to update his/her
knowledge of our faith. The courses are offered in
various locations and will be conducted in English,
Spanish, Polish, Creole, and Mandarin. Brochures
are available on the tables in the back of the church.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading -Rejoice heartily, O Jerusalem! For see,
your savior comes (Zechariah 9:9-10).

Gospel - Come, all you who labor and are burdened, and I
will give you rest (Matthew 11:25-30).
FEAST OF FAITH
Little Mysteries
Two small rites - or, as one liturgist has called them,
“little mysteries” - accompany the preparation of the gifts.
The priest or deacon takes a small cruet of water from the
server and adds a drop of water to the wine. Then, after
the elevation of the chalice (and the incensation, if
incense is used), the priest washes his hands. Both of
these actions were at first practical, matter-of-fact
realities: in the ancient world the wine was usually quite
thick, and was generally mixed with water before it was
drunk. And in the early church, when the faithful brought
forward a great variety of gifts at this time, there was a
definite need for the presider to wash his hands!
But now these rites serve a purely symbolic function.
The mingling of the water and wine is accompanied by a
prayer that speaks of the wonderful exchange of the
Mass, the mingling of Christ’s divinity and our
humanity. And as the priest washes his hands, he prays
words of supplication from Psalm 51, acknowledging his
own sinfulness in the presence of the assembly before he
dares to approach the altar for this most sacred action.
SHARE THE BURDEN
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and
I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our
Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter
from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do
not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ.
Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith
journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we
must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering
and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone,
for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by
ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the
Body of Christ - the community of disciples gathered for
worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us
remember that we can share that burden with our
Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.

NOWA MSZA ŚWIĘTA W OKRESIE WAKACYJNYM!

REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
Dziejesze czytania mszalne kierują naszą uwagę na
prostotę i pokorę. Dla wielu ludzi temat ten jest
niezrozumiały, i w dzisiejszym świecie nie budzi
wielkiego zainteresowania. Pokorny i prosty człowiek
uważany jest dziś za dziwaka. A Jezus na przekór
ogólnemu myśleniu mówi: „uczcie się ode Mnie, bo jest
cichy i pokorny sercem” (Mt 11, 29). Zaskakująca rzecz.
Wielki, wspaniały i potężny Bóg ma upodobanie w
prostocie i kocha się w pokorze. Jezus jest pokorny,
najpokorniejszy ze wszystkich. Jego pokora nie ma nic
wspólnego ze słabością. Nasza pokora tak, bo polega na
przyznaniu się do słabości i niewystarczalności. Ale
Boża pokora oznacza, że miłość nie potrafi patrzeć z
góry. Właśnie dlatego, że Bóg kocha, nie może nie być
pokorny. Nasz Bóg jest nieskończenie pokorny, wyzbyty
w wszelkiego zabiegania o własny prestiż. Kiedy
spojrzymy na Jego życie to stwierdzimy jedno, że jest
ono wielkim świadectwem pokory. Narodziny w ubogiej
stajni, uboga rodzina, haniebna krzyżowa śmierć.
Największym dowodem pokory jest ustanowienie
Eucharystii. Jest to wielka pokora Boga wobec
człowieka, „uzależnienie” się Boga od człowieka. Jakże
wielkie bezgraniczne oddanie się Boga. I tę wielką
prawdę potrafią zrozumieć tylko ci prości, najmniejsi, o
których mówi Chrystus: „wysławiam Cię Ojcze (…), że
zakryłeś te rzeczy przed mądrymi i roztropnymi, a
objawiłeś je prostaczkom” (Mt 11,25).

FIESTA DE LA FE
El Vino
Mientras que el pan nos da la fuerza, el vino nos da la
alegría. Su consumo no es tan esencial como el agua, pero
al compartirlo hace sacra la vida aún más, refirma la
amistad y significa también la vitalidad humana. El vino
es la plenitud de la vida, es símbolo de la felicidad y
prosperidad. Siendo el nuevo Israel, la Iglesia, es el nuevo
vino que en ofrenda se presenta ante el altar. En el
Antiguo Testamento el mismo pueblo de Dios fue
comparado con una viña (Isaías 5:1 – 7). Al presentar el
vino con el pan al altar, estamos simbolizando nuestra
humanidad total, en sus procesos de cambio y
aspiraciones más profundas. Este vino que ofrecemos, nos
recuerda lo más íntimo y sagrado de un ser humano: su
sangre y con ella la vida en todo sentido. Como cristianos,
beberemos este mismo vino, siendo ya Sangre del Señor,
porque con esta acción estamos dispuestos a beber su
cáliz, a compartir su suerte, a asumir su cruz. Ofrecer pan
y vino en el altar es ofrecer nuestra propia vida a hacernos
pan para que todos coman; vino para que todos tengan

COMPARTE LA CARGA
“Vengan a mí, todos los que están fatigados y
agobiados por la carga, y yo los aliviaré” (Mateo 11:28).
Esta palabras de nuestro Salvador son un gran contraste
con el previo capítulo del mismo Evangelio, cuando nos
dice que si no cargamos nuestra propia cruz, no somos
dignos de Cristo. Relacionar estos dos mensajes puede
ayudarnos en nuestro camino de fe. Ser seguidor de Cristo
ciertamente significa que debemos abrazar la cruz, en su
misterio que es sufrimiento y triunfo a la vez. Es algo que
no necesitamos hacer solos, ya que la carga suele ser
demasiado pesada para llevarla sin ayuda. ¿A quién
volcarnos entonces? Podemos volcarnos al Cuerpo de
Cristo, a la comunidad de discípulos reunidos para el
culto. Cuando sintamos que la carga es demasiado
pesada, recordemos que podemos compartirla con
nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo que pueden
traernos descanso.
