ADULT CONFIRMATION
Next Sunday, May 19th, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. At the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, May 18th,
one teen-aged member and one adult member of our parish, Natalie Hernandez and Jennifer Quevedo, will receive
the Sacrament of Confirmation. We congratulate them
and offer our prayers and support as they complete their
initiation into our Catholic faith.
OUR LADY OF REFUGE
On Thursday, May 16th, at 7:30PM, the film Gasland
will be shown in the school hall at Our Lady of Refuge
Church, 2020 Foster Avenue (at Ocean Avenue). The film
offers a belief of what happens to people when companies
drill for natural gas using a technique called “fracking”. It
asserts that chemicals used in fracking poison our drinking water and the food we grow, and may carry cancercausing radon and promotes climate change, a major
cause of droughts and violent weather like Hurricane
Sandy. A discussion will follow the film.
YEAR OF FAITH
The sixth episode (“The Mystical Union of Christ and
the Church”) series Catholism will be shown on Monday,
May 20th, at 7:30PM in the rectory.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
TODAY’S READINGS
The paschal candle, blessed at the Easter Vigil,
carried in procession into the darkened church, and
aflame with the light of Christ to be passed hand to hand
to renew our baptism, burns for the fifty days of Easter
whenever we gather as Christ’s risen body. In the last
fifty years, we have grown to see this candle as the sign of
Christ’s enduring presence with us. Before then, it was
often seen more as a kind of signpost pointing backwards
to events in Christ’s life. Therefore, in some places, on
the fortieth day after Easter, in order to portray the
disappearance of Jesus at the Ascension, the candle was
hidden.
Now we see the paschal candle as a sign of the great
baptismal season of grace and it remains in a prominent
place throughout the entire fifty days. We do know of
some churches that did not hide the candle after the
Ascension. In England before the Reformation, the candle
was left in place for fifty days, since on Pentecost Eve
there was a vigil, and the candle was used to consecrate
the waters of the font. In Salisbury cathedral, the candle
was thirty‑six feet high, and in Westminster Abbey
weighed over three hundred pounds. On Pentecost, the
candles were melted to make tapers for the funerals of the
poor.

First Reading - Stephen looked up intently to heaven and
saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand
of God (Acts 7:55-60).
Psalm - The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth
(Psalm 97).
Second Reading - I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation
22:12-14, 16-17, 20).
Gospel - Jesus prays that the love of the Father may be in
those who believe (John 17:20-26).
A mere seven weeks ago thousands of new Church
members were baptized. Their new life in Christ has once
again infused new life into the Church. Their new-found
faith has inspired and bolstered the faith of those who
have followed Christ for many years. As the Easter
season nears its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms.
In the second reading we hear Christ calling us: “Come.
… Let … the one who wants it receive the gift of lifegiving water” (Revelation 22:17).
But our baptism is not one of water only. John refers
to washed robes, and we know that this washing is to be
“in the blood of the Lamb.” To make sure we get this
message, we have today’s first reading from Acts. It is the
story of Stephen, the first Christian to be killed for his
faith in Jesus. We remember the promise and also the cost
of being a disciple of Christ.

NABOŻEŃSTWA MAJOWE. Zapraszamy na tradycyjne
nabożeństwa majowe ku czci Matki Bożej. 20 minutowe
nabożeństwa składają się z litani, dziesiątek rόżańca,
pieśni maryjnych i krόtkich rozważań. Gdzie? Pod figurą
Matki Bożej przy probostwie. Czas? Godz. 19:00 w
tygodniu oraz pod koniec niedzielnej Mszy.
GENEZA & HISTORIA NABOŻEŃSTW MAJOWYCH.
Trudno już w połowie maja nie przypomnieć,
ponownie parafianom, iż znajdujemy się w miesiącu
poświęconym Najświętszej Maryi, Oblubienicy Józefa.
Kościół najpiękniejszy miesiąc poświęca Tej, która
była najpiękniejszym Kwiatem ziemi. Maj, polski maj!
Za autora jednak właściwych nabożeństw majowych,
historycznie uważa się jezuitę, o. Ansolani (1713). On to
w kaplicy królewskiej w Neapolu codziennie w maju
urządzał koncert pieśni ku czci Bożej Matki, który
kończył
się
błogosławieństwem
Najświętszym
Sakramentem.
W roku 1726 Jezuita, o. Hannibal Dionizy, wydał
broszurkę pod znamiennym tytułem: ”Miesiąc maj, czyli
miesiąc Maryi”, w której zachęcał do obchodzenia tego
miesiąca ku czci Bożej Matki; podawał sposoby, jak ten
miesiąc urządzać. Zaleca w niej szczególnie, by ustroić
pięknie obraz Matki Bożej, odmówić modlitwy i składać
ku Jej czci „Kwiatki duchowe”, czyli szczególne
wyrzeczenia się. Podobne dzieło wydał inny jezuita,
Calvi, w roku 1758. Na Sycylii jezuita, Lalomia wydał
również na ten temat książeczkę (1762). W kościele
parafialnym Weronese od roku 1739 w maju odmawiano
litanię do Matki Bożej, różaniec i składano „fioretti”,
(kontynuacja artykułu z lewej strony), czyli kwiatki
duchowe ku Jej czci. W roku 1734 spotykamy się z tym
nabożeństwem w Grezzana koło Werony. W roku 1734
jest to nabożeństwo odprawiane również w Weronie w
kościele św. Andrzeja, w roku 1747 w Genui, a od roku
1774 także w Ferrarze. Jednak były to wypadki
sporadyczne i mało znane, skoro św. Alfons Liguori (+
1787) jeszcze nic o nich nie wie, a przecież tak wielki
czciciel Maryi w swoim nieśmiertelnym dziele
”Uwielbienia Maryi” z całą pewnością wiadomości o nich
by umieścił.Za największego apostoła nabożeństw
majowych uważa się jezuitę, o. Muzzarelli. W roku 1787
wydał on broszurkę, w której propagował nabożeństwo
majowe. Co więcej rozesłał ją do wszystkich biskupów
Italii. Sam w Rzymie zaprowadził to nabożeństwo w
słynnym kościele zakonu „Il Gesu” mimo, że zakon
wtedy formalnie już nie istniał, zniesiony przez papieża
Klemensa XIV w roku 1773. Jakby w nagrodę za to
opuścił ziemię dla nieba właśnie w maju 1813 roku.
Odprawiał on również nabożeństwo majowe w Paryżu,
gdzie towarzyszył papieżowi Piusowi VII w podróży na
koronację Napoleona Bonaparte. Pius VII nabożeństwo
majowe obdarzył odpustami. W Polsce pierwsze
nabożeństwo majowe wprowadzili jezuici w Tarnopolu
(1838), misjonarze w Warszawie w kościele Ś w. Krzyża
w roku (1852), ksiądz Golian w Krakowie (w 1856) i we
Włocławku biskup Marszewski (1859). W tym samym
czasie cześć Królowej maja szerzył w Galicji poezją o.
jezuita Karol Antoniewicz (+ 1852).
Święty Jan Bosko (+ 1888) ze swoimi chłopcami w maju
stroił Jej ołtarzyki, które znajdowały się w każdej sali i
sypialni. Owszem urządzano konkursy, w której sali
będzie najpiękniej wystrojony wizerunek Matki Bożej.
Codziennie św. Jan Bosko dawał swoim chłopcom
fioretti, czyli praktyczne wskazania do naśladowania cnót
Bożej Matki.W połowie XIX wieku nabożeństwo majowe
przyjęło się we wszystkich prawie krajach. Papież Pius
XII niejeden raz zachęcał do oddawania szczególnej czci
Bożej Rodzicielce w miesiącu maju. Tak uczynił w liście
do kardynała Alojzego Maglione (Dum saeculum) w roku
1942. Tak uczynił również w liście do tegoż kardynała w
roku 1943 (Singulis annis), w którym szczególnie gorąco
polecił, by majowe nabożeństwo ofiarować dla
uproszenia szczęśliwego zakończenia wojny światowej.
Wreszcie w encyklice, wydanej l maja w roku 1948
(Auspicia quae eam) w której papież poleca raz jeszcze
modlitwy w miesiącu maju poświęcić dla uproszenia
trwałego pokoju. Nad światem bowiem zaczęły
gromadzić się nowe chmury.
Od szeregu lat w całej Polsce ustalił się porządek
nabożeństw majowych. Obejmuje on: wystawienie
Najświętszego
Sakramentu,
odśpiewanie
litanii
Loretańskiej i antyfony: „Pod Twoją obronę”,
przemówienie lub czytanie okolicznościowe, schowanie
Najświętszego Sakramentu i pieśń majową lub „Apel
Jasnogórski”.

RECORDAMOS NUESTRO BAUTISMO
Hace sólo siete semanas que miles de nuevos
miembros de la Iglesia fueron bautizados. Su nueva vida
en Cristo de nuevo infunde renovada vida en la Iglesia.
Esta fe nueva ha inspirado y alentado la fe de los que han
sido seguidores de Cristo por muchos años. Al acercarse
el fin del tiempo de Pascua, recordamos la escena de
nuestro bautismo. En la segunda lectura oímos a Cristo
que nos llama: “Ven… el que quiera, que venga a beber
gratis del agua de la vida” (Apocalipsis 22:17).
Pero nuestro bautismo no es sólo de agua. Juan hace
referencia a lavar sus ropas, y sabemos que este lavar es
“en la sangre del Cordero”. Para estar seguros de que
entendemos este mensaje, tenemos la primera lectura de
hoy de los Hechos. Es la historia de Esteban, el primer
cristiano que sufre la muerte por su fe en Jesús.
Recordamos la promesa y también el costo de ser
discípulo de Cristo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Entre galas y desfiles primaverales, en San Antonio,
Texas hoy comienza el famoso “Fiesta Week”
conmemorando la batalla del Álamo. Esta semana larga
de diez días y ciento veinte eventos es una secularización
de la antigua tradición latinoamericana de “Fiestas
patronales” que celebran al santo patrón o santa patrona o
la virgen patrona de un oficio o actividad; de un pueblo o
región. Estas fiestas son tan populares en naciones latinas
que normalmente se tienen varias de ellas durante el año.
Puerto Rico, por ejemplo, tiene algunas setenta y cinco
fiestas patronales.
Cada año las regiones celebran a su santo patrón o a
su santa patrona con un fin de semana o una semana
entera de misas, danzas, competencias, procesiones
religiosas, verbenas, kerméses y banquetes seglares. Estos
eventos se han ido desarrollando a través de los siglos y
son un mestizaje de costumbres, colorido y creencias
europeas, indígenas y africanas.
Muchísima gente recorre a las fiestas patronales
buscando divertirse. Lamentablemente entre tanto festejo
es fácil olvidar al patrón o la patrona, que no solo debe ser
celebrado, debe ser imitado para la gloria de Dios, el
verdadero Patrón de todos.
