MISSION APPEAL
Next weekend, September 14th & 15th, we will welcome
Rev. Mr. Joseph Nguyen, a Vietnamese deacon from the
Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia, who will be speaking to us
at all Masses, asking our support of the mission of the diocese of Xuan-Loc in Vietnam. There will be a special collection after each Mass. Thank you for your generosity and support of this appeal.
PARISH PICNIC SEPTEMBER 22nd
Come join fellow parishioners and friends for a picnic to
be held on Sunday, September 23rd in the small parking lot
and the rectory’s backyard from 10:30AM to 7PM. There

EMBRACING YOUR CROSS
SAINT PETER CLAVER (1581-1654) September 9
We often speak of the “crosses” we must carry in life.
These can range from loss of a job to a serious or terminal
illness to unhealthy relationships, and so on. The cross
has become the wide-ranging metaphor for the trials, ills,
and discomforts that are part and parcel of every human
life. While we all understand this use of the word “cross,”
it does a disservice to what the Jesus of the Gospels
means by it. For him, a “cross” is not something that fate,
bad luck, or unfortunate circumstances foists upon one. It
is, instead, something one chooses, something one
embraces.
For Jesus, carrying the cross in discipleship was the
rejection of earthly possessions or status, it was the
sundering of bonds of kinship or friendship. It was, above
all, the necessary kind of self-sacrificing, selfsurrendering choice one had to make in order to be a true
disciple. When life hands us a “cross,” we pray to the
Lord to give us strength to bear it. If we are to be true
disciples, we must also pray for the strength to reach out
and willingly accept a cross as well. To bear up, with
God’s grace, under the burdens that are not of our own
choosing does take a strong faith. But to walk willingly
under the weight of the cost of discipleship shows an even
stronger desire to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Nearly two hundred years before the Declaration of
Independence proclaimed “that all men are created
equal,” two hundred fifty years before the Emancipation
Proclamation mandated an end to slavery, three hundred
fifty years before Martin Luther King’s “I Have a
Dream”, and four hundred years before the election of an
American president boasting African heritage, Peter
Claver left his native Spain behind to volunteer for the
Jesuit missions in Colombia. There, he was horrified both
by slavery as an institution and by the inhuman brutality
inflicted upon the slaves. He solemnly vowed to become
“the slave of the slaves,” and lived that vow heroically for
close to forty years. Not knowing their language, Peter
began his ministry among the slaves by using the
universal language of practical charity, providing medical
care and a tangible though wordless assertion of their
human dignity: “We spoke to them not with words but
with our hands, kneeling beside them, bathing their faces
and bodies, encouraging them with friendly gestures” (see
Liturgy of the Hours, Volume 4, p. 2018). Then came

Wielkie tłumy szły z Jezusem. On zwrócił się i rzekł do
nich: Jeśli kto przychodzi do Mnie, a nie ma w nienawiści
swego ojca i matki, żony i dzieci, braci i sióstr, nadto
siebie samego, nie może być moim uczniem. Kto nie nosi
swego krzyża, a idzie za Mną, ten nie może być moim
uczniem. Bo któż z was, chcąc zbudować wieżę, nie
usiądzie wpierw i nie oblicza wydatków, czy ma na
wykończenie? Inaczej, gdyby założył fundament, a nie
zdołałby wykończyć, wszyscy, patrząc na to, zaczęliby
drwić z niego: Ten człowiek zaczął budować, a nie zdołał
wykończyć. Albo który król, mając wyruszyć, aby stoczyć
bitwę z drugim królem, nie usiądzie wpierw i nie rozważy,
czy w dziesięć tysięcy ludzi może stawić czoło temu, który
z dwudziestoma tysiącami nadciąga przeciw niemu? Jeśli
nie, wyprawia poselstwo, gdy tamten jest jeszcze daleko, i
prosi o warunki pokoju. Tak więc nikt z was, kto nie
wyrzeka się wszystkiego, co posiada, nie może być moim
uczniem. Łk14, 25-33
REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
Każdy człowiek pragnie być zauważony i doceniony
i pewnie dlatego tak chętnie szukamy pierwszych miejsc.
Dziś gromadzimy się na Eucharystii, która jest
uroczystym zgromadzeniem wspólnoty Kościoła, czyli
tych, którzy są wybrani przez Boga. On przygotował dla
nas Ucztę wokół stołu, przy którym wszystkie miejsca są
pierwsze.
Wszyscy

jesteśmy
powołani do karmienia się
Jego słowem i Ciałem
Jezusa Chrystusa. Niech
uczestnictwo w tej Uczcie
miłości otwiera nas na
potrzeby

LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura - ¿Quién puede saber los caminos de
Dios a menos que Dios le dé sabiduría y le envíe el
Espíritu Santo de lo alto? (Sabiduría 9:13-18b)
Salmo - Tú eres, Señor, nuestro refugio
(Salmo 90 [89]).
Segunda lectura - Pablo pide a Filemón que acepte a su
esclavo, Onésimo, pero no como esclavo, sino como
hermano (Filemón 9-10, 12-17).
Evangelio - Para ser discípulo de Jesús uno debe cargar
con su cruz y renunciar a todas sus posesiones
(Lucas 14:25-33).
CAMBIO DE ACTITUD
Las lecturas de hoy nos sugieren repensar nuestra
actitud y nuestro comportamiento. El pasaje del libro de
la Sabiduría nos recuerda que, en lo que se refiere a
entender, aun la persona más sabia apenas toca la
superficie de las cosas.
En la provocativa y breve carta de san Pablo a
Filemón, el apóstol lo elogia por entender el orden social
– que incluye la esclavitud– y por tratar bien a Onésimo.
Luego Pablo le da la noticia. Le dice que Onésimo es
ahora cristiano y debe tratarlo como tal – como un
hermano, igual a él. ¿Qué pensaría Filemón?
El Evangelio de hoy nos dice que si vamos a seguir a
Jesús, debemos planearlo seriamente. Y cuando creamos
que ya estamos listos, estar dispuestos a aceptar que
nuestros planes nunca son suficientes.
