A group will be forming to read and discuss Pope
Francis’ Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium - The Joy of
the Gospel. If you are interested in joining the
group, contact Pam Fitzgerald at (516) 551-2494 to
discuss dates and times. Please obtain a copy of the
Exhortation prior to the first session.
OUTREACH PROGRAM
Happy Fourth of July!
Now that summer is here in full force and the parents
are feeling the effects of “no more pencils, no more
books” we are asking you to lend a helping hand to
making the kids’ vacation a fun time. We like to be able
to add special treats to the necessary food that we
distribute. This can be in the form of cheese and
crackers, fruit cups, snack bags of potato chips, fritos,
etc. It can also be a non-edible treat such as bubbles,
watering can, sand toys….you get the idea. The only
treat we do not ask for is one that contains (delicious)
chocolate because you know what a kid looks like – as
well as what their clothes look like – who has eaten a
piece of chocolate in hot weather. Plus, and more
importantly, their parents would kill us!
PS We still need mashed potatoes, canned potatoes and
rice.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION
OF OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION PARISH
JULY 5, 2014
Just a little history of the beginning of our wonderful Parish that some of you may or may not remember….
The Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption was established on June 15, 1929 by the Most Reverend Thomas E.
Molloy. Ground was broken for the “Basement” Chapel on October 14, 1929 on land donated by Mr. John Campagnoli, a real estate agent with offices in Manhattan and Copiague. His ads in the newspaper said that Copiague
was “an Italian village, close to the sea with jobs, water, gas, a school and the railroad.” It was Mr. Campagnoli
who invited Guglielmo Marconi to visit Copiague, then Marconiville, in 1917.
Father Del Vecchio supervised the buildings as we know them today. He wrote to Monsignor James H. Griffiths
in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1942 to tell him about Copiague. The Monsignor had agreed to come to preach
at the Dedication ceremony on July 5, 1942.
The dedication of a church is a very much celebrated time for Catholic Churches around the world. Please join
your fellow parishioners on Saturday, July 5th in the Church at 8:00am. Refreshments will be served immediately
after the Mass in the Lower Church Hall.

WALK OF FAITH SHRINE
With the Feast and the warmer weather upon us,
our Shrine with all its beautiful flowers and foliage
is springing to life. With this in mind, we are
getting ready to add memorials for your loved
ones. If you are interested in purchasing a
memorial, please call the Rectory (631) 842-5211,
ext. 35.

on Tuesday, August 12th and extend through
Tuesday, September 23rd. It will be held at the
Religious Education offices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays.

Face the Truth - a Pre-Indenpendence Day Event,
Thursday, July 3rd, 3:00-4:30PM, held just south of
L.I.E., Exit 70, Manorville. Why? Because everyone
has an inherent right to life including the unborn.

JUBILEUSZ POŚWIĘCENIA NASZEJ PARAFII
MATCE BOŻEJ WNIEBOWZIĘTEJ- 5 LIPCA 2014
Msza św. z okazji jubileuszu 85-lecia poświęcenia
naszego kościoła zostanie odprawiona w sobotę 5
lipca o godz. 8:00 rano, w kościele (w języku angielskim). Bezpośrednio po Mszy św. zapraszamy wszystkich do sali pod kościołem na ciasto i kawę / herbatę.
PROGRAM POMOCY SOCJALNEJ
Prosimy Państwa obecnie o przysmaki dla dzieci na okres wakacji, takie jak np. krakersy i ser, owoce w pojemniczkach (fruit cups) lub małe torebki chipsów (ziemniaczanych, fritos, itp.). Prosimy, aby nie przynosili Państwo
czekolady, gdyż łatwo rozpuszcza się latem. Prosimy także o zabawki, takie jak np. konewki, zabawki do piasku,
bańki mydlane, itp.
Nadal potrzebujemy również purree ziemniaczanego,
ziemniaków w puszkach oraz ryżu.

“YOU ARE PETER,
AND UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH”
With these words to Peter, Jesus laid the foundation for
his Church. And as we heard on the Feast of the Ascension,
Jesus also promised to be with his Church until the end of
time. True to Jesus’ word, this Church is now being served by
the 265th successor to St. Peter. If you look in the front of a
Catholic Bible, you can see a list of all the Popes since Peter.
Quite amazing!
Jesus founded one Church intended for all people. And
yet every day we see more Churches opening in unexpected
places: store fronts, empty schools, even private homes. This
is not what Jesus intended. This is not what James gave his life
for and for which Peter was arrested (first reading) and Paul
was “poured out like a libation” (second reading).
It is said that the second largest group of Christians in
the United States is fallen away Catholics. How sad that these
millions of souls who once possessed the fullness of truth and
the grace of the sacraments have walked away. Some of these
are wonderful people who are very devoted to Jesus and
Scripture. How much richer their lives would be if they also
had the Eucharist and the graces of the sacrament of
Reconciliation. And the Church is always here, waiting for
them to walk back. CATHOLICS COME HOME!
Last week’s bulletin announced an opportunity to study
one of Pope Francis’ recent writings, “The Joy of the Gospel”.
This would be a great opportunity to deepen our faith. If you
missed the announcement, call Pam at (516) 551- 2494 for
information.
