PR [email protected] Warsaw, 21 December 2005 Gazeta Wyborcza as November leader Gazeta Wyborcza holds on to its lead in November ranking of the most opinion making media prepared by the Institute of Media Monitoring. It outruns Rzeczpospolita by as many as 237 publications. Puls Biznesu and Super Express have also went up to top leadership. The debut of Radio Maryja in the first fifteen of the breakdown of the most frequently quoted media is a surprise. The analysis has been made on the basis of 4946 November press, radio and television publications registering 6013 references to other media. Most of them related to Gazeta Wyborcza (Chart 1), which was quoted 1303 times. Second position goes to Rzeczpospolita, however the reference gap between the two journals deepened to 237 publications. Zycie Warszawy holds on to the third position (538). Puls Biznesu arrived in the top leadership (245 publications) owing its fourth position in the ranking to vastly commented interwiew with Andrzej Lepper on Poland’s economy and his statement concerning Leszek Balcerowicz. The fifth place went to Super Express (234) making it outperform Fakt (174), which was fourth in the last two months. Super Express was frequently quoted in the context Poland’s politics and the oil scandal. Gazeta Wyborcza also won in the ranking of media quoted the most frequently by sources other than press reviews. Chart 1. As far as the ranking of the most frequently quoted television stations is concerned, certain reshufflings were registered in top leadership – TVP1 took the first place outnumbering TVN which came in the second. High number of refernces of Radio Maryja, making it arrive the second among the most frequently quoted radio stations, was surprising. It’s the radio’s debut in the first fifteen of the ranking. Radio Maryja was brought the most often when reporting on the politicians’ statements delivered on Radio Maryja air. Chart 2. Press reviews were the most frequently quoted edging up to 2126 in November. TVN 24 and TVP3 used the news posted by other media the most frequently. 83 percent of references concerned nationwide media while less than 17 percent – local editions. Media’s quotations from Mazowiecki Province were the most abundant with Życie Warszawy holding the leadership. Wprost maintained its position of the most often quoted nationwide weekly (179 publications) being directly followed by Polityka (119) and Newsweek (102). Weekly Ozon scored 39 references and Daily Nowy Dzień debuted in the ranking with 68 quotations. Each month, Instytut Monitorowania Mediów screens all press, TV and radio media pieces where the authors refer to the news delivered by other media. The research covers nearly 500 newspapers, 8 TV stations and selected broadcasts of 9 radio stations.
