1-25 Club Winner for the 22nd Week - #75 Theresa Levasseur
SHARING OUR BLESSINGS - February 27, 2011
Weekly $4502 (incl. $228 in loose money); Diocesan Obligations
$50; Fuel $242; Catholic Home Missions $40.
Stewardship Note: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and
acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”
(Matthew 7:24). Our Lord gives us two distinct commands today. We
must listen and we must act. We listen when we participate in Mass. We
act when we participate in the ministry of the parish. We need to do both
for a strong foundation. Participating more fully in the liturgy and life of
the parish may require some changes on our part. We may have to move
away from our current lifestyle so that we can move closer to God.
DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE MERCY
This Sunday at 3 p.m. we will sing the Chaplet to the Divine
Mercy, spend time in adoration and conclude with benediction. As
unpleasant some people may consider the thought of the “end of
time” to be, there is no way of avoiding the fact that Jesus is calling
all mankind to run with devotion to His divine mercy.
NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
March 6, 2011
Be my rock of refuge,
a stronghold to give me safety.
You are my rock and my fortress;
for your name’s sake you will
lead and guide me.
Seasonal Changes for the Liturgies of Lent. This coming
Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During this
season of preparation for Easter, our churches look stark
and simple–no flowers at the altar, no festive banners or
decorations. And our liturgies feel different, too. The organ
is quiet except to accompany the singing of the assembly.
The Gloria, our Sunday song of rejoicing, is not heard
except on solemnities, and we will not sing the Alleluia, our
joyful acclamation of praise, until the Easter Vigil. This
year, may the stripped-away liturgies of Lent remind us to
strip away what is not essential in our lives to make space
for the crucified and risen One, and thus to be ready to sing
“Alleluia” once again when Easter returns.
The second collection this weekend is designated for the
Diocesan Obligations
Next weekend the second collection is for the Utility and Energy Costs
LENTEN REGULATIONS
Lenten fast and abstinence regulations for
the Diocese of Worcester are as follows:
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all
Catholics fourteen (14) years of age and older
on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the
Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed by
all Catholics who are eighteen (18) years of
age but not yet fifty-nine (59) years of age on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. Those who are bound to fast may take only one full
meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain
strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between
meals is not permitted. Catholics should not lightly excuse
themselves from these prescribed Lenten penitential practices.
LENTEN SCHEDULE
Ash Wednesday. Imposition of ashes will take place during the
Masses at 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. and at 7 p.m. Prayer services with the
imposition of ashes will be at 1:30 p.m. for the students of Saint
Joseph School (parishioners and parents are welcome) and at 3 p.m.
Ash Wednesday Almsgiving. The Lenten season is marked with
three important Penance practices: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.
These practices express one’s conversion and concern for the needs
of others. This year the traditional Lenten almsgiving will be
designated for the homeless and neglected persons who depend
upon the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Webster for charitable
assistance. As you come to the altar to receive the ashes, please
consider making your sacrificial almsgiving by placing your
donation in baskets located on the steps in the sanctuary.
Devotional Schedule. _ Sundays. The singing of Gorzkie Zale
(Lenten Lamentations) will take place every Sunday afternoon at
3 p.m. _ Fridays. Every Friday of Lent (the Stations of the Cross
will be prayed at 1 p.m. in English with the students of St. Joseph

School (parishioners and parents welcome); and at 7 p.m. in Polish.
Confessions. Confessions will be heard each day during Lent
following the last morning Mass; every Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.,
and Saturdays at 3 p.m.
Children Lenten Masses. The 9:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday
during Lent is designated as Children’s Lenten Masses. All families
with children are invited to come and celebrate the Eucharist.
Lenten Flower Sacrifices. Each week the children will be
reminded in their classes to make loving sacrifices and perform
good deeds for others offering them up to Jesus. They are to bring
their sacrifices and deeds written on a piece of paper to the Mass.
If they forget, there will be index cards and pens available for them
in the back of the Church. At the Offertory, they will come forward
to the Crucifix on the altar and place their papers in the “Lenten
Flower Sacrifice Basket” and take a flower which they will put up
on the base of our Lenten Cross. Their loving sacrifices and good
deeds will turn into “Flowers for Jesus.”
40 Days for Life. You are invited to join hundreds of thousands of
people across the country taking part in the 40 Days for Life prayer
campaign from March 9 and continuing through April 17. There are
a variety of ways that people can participate in this powerful
ministry. We hope that many will consider signing up for a
particular day whether by being physically present at the vigil
outside of Planned Parenthood, or by making a commitment to pray
from wherever they are–at home, at work, at school, during
adoration, etc.
Bishop McManus reminds us that in Evangelium Vitae, Pope
John Paul II emphasized the power of prayer when he said: “A
great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise
up throughout the world.”
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE
RCIA. Sessions on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. Please pray for all
involved that we may come closer to Jesus in our daily lives.
Religious Ed. Classes 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Monday.
Confirmation. Classes are now being held on Monday nights at 7
p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the school.
Children’s Bulletins. In the back of the church there are weekly
bulletins for your children. One is for ages 3-6 and the other is for
ages 7-12. Please encourage your child to do the activities so they
may better understand what is being said at Mass.
WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
THE MASSACHUSETTS HEALTH
CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS
The role of parents as the primary educators of their children is
more critical than ever in today’s culture. Parents are the first to
help children develop their conscience and define their values.
Regrettably, the rights and responsibilities of parents are being
undermined by certain human sexuality education programs being
taught in public schools throughout the Commonwealth. While no
one objects to being taught about safety, nutrition, substance abuse,
etc., the present danger of the health frameworks is that students
would be taught such things as: how to get an abortion without
parental knowledge, “behaviors: for pregnancy prevention”
including how to obtain contraceptives, acceptance of premarital
sex and acceptance of homosexual behavior. This is occurring even
in the younger elementary grades and is clearly contrary to the
dignity of the human person and the right of parents to raise their
children with authentic Christian values. The Diocese will
provide a special brochure for parents next week to make them
aware of the danger of this program.
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
On Sunday, March 13th, Daylight Saving Time will begin.
Don’t forget to push your clock forward one hour before
retiring Saturday night.

COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA
Each year there is a collection throughout the diocese for the Church
in Latin America. In some ways the Church is vibrant and grounded in
deep faith. However, the devastating natural disasters and poverty of the
region lend to unique challenges. In 2010, the Church in Latin America
was particularly strained. Earthquakes in both Haiti and Chile caused
unprecedented damage to both physical structures and the fragile
regional economy. We are facing long years of recovery that will place
an extra burden on the annual Collection. This special appeal supports
pastoral projects that engage Latin American parishioners in their faith,
strengthening their sense of mission and identity with the Church. The
collection will be taken in our parish on the weekend of March 19/20.
SCHOOL NEWS
Home and School Association. The time has come for our spring
fundraiser. This year we will be selling Butter Braids, a favorite among
many SJS families and the surrounding community. Sales begin March
7 through March 21st. Delivery will be on April 14th, just in time for
Easter! You will be required to pick up your breads on that date at the
school. Please contact the school if you wish to place an order. Thank
you for your support.– Cindi Gardner, Chair
Auction. Did you purchase your ticket for the auction? March 12th is
just a week away!
BEATIFICATION OF JOHN PAUL II
There are still a few places available for the pilgrimage to Rome for
the beatification of John Paul II. For the first time in our life, we will
celebrate the beatification of the person whom we knew, listened to, and
respected. Therefore, it will be a great experience to take part in
witnessing history on May 1st at the Vatican Square. The
accommodations in a hotel near the Vatican is very convenient and
provides many opportunities to visit places of interest. Interested parties
please call the rectory.
WEBSTER POLICE STATION
On March 7th at 7 p.m. at Bartlett High School on Lake Parkway a
meting will take place to discuss the proposed new Police Station
building to be constructed in downtown Webster. The presence of
police in the downtown area would add to the safety of the
neighborhoods especially Catholic schools. In addition, the downtown
of Webster is long overdue for a facelift and the new police station may
be the first step in the right direction. Parishioners should participate in
this meeting and hear the details from the various committees.
