SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER - May 1, 2011
Divine Mercy Sunday
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
Feast of Faith. The Homily. The ambo, or pulpit, is a
special place–it is the place for God’s word. That is why it
is not used for all the spoken words of the Mass, even
important words like the collects and the blessing. The
ambo is only used for the scripture readings, and for the
homily and the prayer of the faithful.
The homily is part of the Liturgy of the Word. It flows
from the readings we have just heard, and helps us to
understand the way in which God is speaking to us today.
The homily is not a lecture, a catechism lesson, or a speech.
It is more like an exhortation; it has an urgency to live the
faith we profess, to see our world by the light of the Gospel.
There are many styles of preaching and many ways to
respond to the scriptures. But whether the homily is weak
or strong, an open ear and an open heart can find in it an
abundance of spiritual nourishment.
The second collection this weekend, the first weekend of the
month, will be taken for the Diocesan Obligations.
Next weekend the second collection will be taken for the
Utility and Energy Costs
FIRST EUCHARIST
Today at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy students of the St. Joseph School
second grade together with the Religious
Education class will receive the sacrament
of the Holy Eucharist. Congratulations to:
Kylee Croteau, Adriana Duby, David
Fleck, Joseph Fleck, Deniella Harwood,
Alexander Laws, Christopher Mahlert,
Nicolas Micciche, Meagan Peck, Gabriella
Piwowarczyk, Aidin Rosario, Adam Sacco,
and Anna Smieszek. May the first reception
of Holy Communion fill your hearts with love for Jesus and a
desire to receive Him often.
A nice gesture to recognize the importance of the day would be to
send them a card for their First Communion. Just put it in an
envelope addressed with their name and Religious Education
Office. Drop it off at the rectory or put it in the basket that will be
on the tables in the back of the Church.
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
On the first Sunday of each month we gather
in worship to the Divine Mercy. Today is
Sunday in a special way connected with the
mystery of Divine Mercy. All over the world
the faithful are deep in prayer praising God for
His goodness and forgiveness. Divine Mercy
Sunday was established to remind us that
anyone who flees to God, even the biggest
sinner, receives forgiveness of sins and returns
to unity with God and the Church. In our
parish we pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at
3 p.m. followed by benediction.

SATURDAY VENERATION
Everyone who is close to Pope John Paul II is invited for an
evening vigil to our Basilica on Saturday, April 30 at 7 p.m..
Connecting in the spirit of the pilgrims who go to the beatification
ceremony in Rome, we will spend the evening reflecting the life
and teachings of John Paul II, and we will praise God by the
intercession of the new blessed. In the atmosphere of prayer, we
will thank God for the great Sheperd and a wonderful Man, who
enrolled in the history of mankind and the life of every Christian.
Confirmation. On Friday, April 29th our young people celebrated the
Sacrament of Confirmation at Sacred Heart Church with 84 other youth
from the surrounding parishes. Congratulations to all as they now have
completed their full initiation as Catholics. Many blessings to: Patrick
Bak, Arthur Bilis, Alyssa Bryn, Patryca Chmielewska, Luke Dery, Alicia
Garamy, Coleman Hunt, Rafal Lachcik, Marisa Mason, Daniel
Mikucki, Matthew Puchala, Colin Siegmund, Isabelle Tran, and Lukasz
Trzuskot. The young confirmandi from St. Joseph’s are invited to
celebrate in our parish at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy on May 15th with a brunch
in the Rectory after Mass.
FIRST FRIDAY CELEBRATION
The First Friday devotional practices have a long history in the
Catholic Church. This day is associated with an increased number
of Eucharistic celebrations, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament,
confessions and prayers throughout the day. Likewise, St. Joseph
Basilica has plenty of devotional opportunities. We urge all those
who are not working or live close to the church to participate in the
Masses at 6:30 and 7 in the morning with the Sacred Heart Society
members. Every member of the Sacred Heart Society should be
honored to be in the church on that day.
Following the 7 a.m. liturgy adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
will take place and continue throughout the day concluding at 3
p.m. with the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by
benediction. Adorers are asked to attend at their scheduled time.
Also, a Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. in the Polish language.
We are pleased to report that the following are celebrating their
birthdays this month: Sally Barnaby (92), Nellie Ziemba (93) and Stasia
Sableski who will be 100 years young on May 25th. We wish these young
ladies a happy day with family and friends and hope they even try to
dance around the maypole!
REFLECTIONS ON EASTER
Easter Sunday, which commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus,
is the celebration of new life. In fact, the Resurrection is the life of
the Church. All subsequent celebrations and solemnities have roots
in Easter Day.
In our Basilica, the sacred Triduum was filled with people, more
than in previous years, at the numerous devotional services. I was
pleased to see parishioners, friends, alumni and visitors from
different places who celebrated Holy Week with us. The solemn
liturgy within the meaningful musical framework accentuated the
message of Easter. I am grateful to all the members of the choirs,
to our organist, Robert Wojcik, and the musicians for their total
dedication to our St. Joseph Basilica family. I also want to
recognize the presence of a large number of school children
carrying lilies and the altar servers who took part in the Holy
Thursday procession through the Basilica to the repository, as well
as the Eucharistic Ministers and organizations who participated in
these sacred days.
Needless to say, the elaborate decorations added to the Easter
solemnity and complemented the Easter experience. We are
grateful to Sylvia and Fred Kitka, Kevin Rekowski, Eugene
Rudnicki and the members of the Altar Guild who spend countless
hours day and night in preparing the Basilica for these solemn days.
FROM THE OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Religious Ed - Classes 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm every Monday. Our last class
will be on May 23rd with Baseball catechism and a party.
RCIA - We wish to extend our congratulations to those who were baptized
at the Easter Vigil: Jocelyn and Meagan Peck, along with Jennifer Aoude
who was baptized, confirmed and celebrated the Eucharist and Cynthia
Hunt who was confirmed. We ask that as a parish community we continue
to pray for them to grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop
a genuine Catholic world view.
MAY BIRTHDAYS
BINGO
I am pleased to report that many volunteers stepped forward at the
Bingo meeting on April 26th and offered their services to re-introduce
Bingo at St. Joseph School. Opening night is May 12th at 6:30 p.m. which
will feature special food, pastry, free coffee and door prizes. We invite our
regular players, new players, parents and volunteers to make this a very
special evening. If anyone would be willing to bake some pastry for the
evening or donate a gift for an attendance prize we would be most
grateful.
TRIP TO ROME
With great joy and anticipation, I am looking forward to
participating in the beatification of John Paul II on Sunday, May 1st
at the Vatican Square. Together with the 25 pilgrims we will carry
our personal intentions to the tombs of the apostles especially to the
tomb of John Paul II. Many religious, spiritual and cultural events
are being planned in Rome on this happy occasion. I hope our time
will allo us to participate at least in some of these events. I
recommend you watch the ceremonies on television with a
devotional attitude and witness the unfolding history.
