Press Release ul. Pańska 97; 00-834 Warszawa tel. 22 323 73 10 kontakt: Agata Szybieniecka Specjalista ds. PR [email protected] Warsaw, November 24th, 2005 Gazeta Wyborcza in the lead again Following three months of making up for the loss, Gazeta Wyborcza is in the lead again. In the October ranking of the most opinion-making media elaborated by the Institute of Media Monitoring Gazeta is ahead of Rzeczpospolita by 164 publications. As befits the election month, the most often cited themes were press reviews, Polish politics, ranking and polls. The analysys was based on 4570 October press publications, radio and television broadcasts in which 5692 references to other media were reported. Most of them concerned Gazeta Wyborcza (Chart 1), which was referred to 1089 times. Gazeta is followed by Rzeczpospolita, which was cited 925 times. Życie Warszawy and Fakt keep their third and fourth position. The Wprost weekly is also placed in the narrow top. Radio ZET is on the top of radio stations, whereas TVN – TV stations. Onet.pl remains the leader of the most often cited internet portals. Nevertheless, internet materials were not as often referred to by journalists as a month ago, which is conformed by the absence of internet media among the top 15 quoted media. Gazeta Wyborcza also heads the chart of the most often cited media excluding press reviews. Chart 1. The biggest number of citations caming from local media came from Mazowieckie Province, where Życie Warszawy remains the leader. 1 In October media attention focused on politics and elections: the most often cited themes involved references in press reviews, quotations about Polish politics ad presentations of rankings and polls. Out of 1088 political references 481 were related to presidential and parliamentary elections. Media did not comment on scandals so much– the ones widely-discussed issue was the scandal of nurses photographing themselves with newborn babies at Górnośląskie Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka i Matki in Katowice. Gazeta Wyborcza has been competing with Rzeczpospolita for the whole year. Throughout recent months we watched Gazeta narrow the gap between itself and the leader. In October Wyborcza deposed Rzeczpospolita and outstripped it with 164 materials. However both dailies registered a fall in the number of citations. It can result from the strong position of Fakt, which for two months has remained on the fourth position in the ranking, registering an increase in the number of citations each month. (Chart 2.).
