The Mass Book for 2012 is now open. Please come to the
rectory to reserve your Masses.
BABY SHOWER
Each year, the Church celebrates “Sanctity of Life
Month” during January. This time is set aside to remind
us of the sacredness of human life from conception to
natural death. Many issues challenge our belief - abortion,
capital punishment, physician-assisted suicide, stem cell
issues - to name a few.
On January 22nd, in particular, we are reminded of
the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion. In the past, our parish has participated in a
project to help support young, unwed mothers who turn to
the Church for help in bringing their babies to birth. This
is a small, but very positive and effective way of directly
assisting women who may have considered aborting their
unborn children.
On the weekends of January 21/22 and January 28/29,
we will have a “Baby Shower”. When you come to Mass,
we ask that you bring new items for babies up to one year
of age, such as pampers, undershirts, stretchies, onesies,
clothing, blankets, crib sheets, etc. Boxes will be placed
by the front doors of the upper and lower churches to receive your donations. We are grateful for whatever support you can give to this project.
CONCERT OF BAROQUE MUSIC
Lovers of classical music are invited for a concert
listed below on the poster. Discounted tickets for adults $12 per person and students/senor citizens $10 - can be
purchased following the Sat. & Sun. Masses at the church
entrance or in the rectory on Monday.
A NEW DAY DAWNS
Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the
people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the
citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change
of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn
from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns.
Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world
in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31).
He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling
them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he
urges them - rather mysteriously - to live “as though” they
aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has
dawned.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The
kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and
Andrew abandon their nets - and even their father - and
follow him. A new day had dawned.
Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the
Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus!
Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well?

Our parish food pantry is in need of the following

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the
world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the
locals say, “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder.” What looks like a
beautiful, narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a
clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenthcentury home and a secret church. During the
Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant
Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as
Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers
seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and “deCatholicized” them. New laws forbade the celebration of
the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed
“Old Church” by the new owners, and the dispossessed
Catholics got to work “hiding” St. Nicholas Parish in the
upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the
same thing, but this is the only hidden church that
survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here.
It’s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in
regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch
painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in
1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its
Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The
new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is
still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant
ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as
long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of
mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after
1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic
Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of
Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today,
Roman Catholics are about nineteen percent of the
population, and there’s no need for any of them to hide in
the attic.

TRZECIA NIEDZIELA OKRESU ZWYKŁEGO
Pan przemówił do Jonasza po raz drugi tymi słowami:
Wstań, idź do Niniwy, wielkiego miasta, i głoś jej
upomnienie, które Ja ci zlecam. Jonasz wstał i poszedł do
Niniwy, jak powiedział Pan. Niniwa była miastem bardzo
rozległym - na trzy dni drogi. Począł więc Jonasz iść
przez miasto jeden dzień drogi i wołał, i głosił: Jeszcze
czterdzieści dni, a Niniwa zostanie zburzona. I uwierzyli
mieszkańcy Niniwy Bogu, ogłosili post i oblekli się w
wory od największego do najmniejszego. Zobaczył Bóg
czyny ich, że odwrócili się od swojego złego
postępowania. I ulitował się Bóg nad niedolą, którą
postanowił na nich sprowadzić, i nie zesłał jej.

Gdy Jan został uwięziony, Jezus przyszedł do Galilei i
głosił Ewangelię Bożą. Mówił: Czas się wypełnił i bliskie
jest królestwo Boże. nawracajcie się i wierzcie w
Ewangelię. Przechodząc obok Jeziora Galilejskiego,
ujrzał Szymona i brata Szymonowego, Andrzeja, jak
zarzucali sieć w jezioro; byli bowiem rybakami. Jezus
rzekł do nich: Pójdźcie za Mną, a sprawię, że się staniecie
rybakami ludzi. I natychmiast zostawili sieci i poszli za
Nim. Idąc dalej, ujrzał Jakuba, syna Zebedeusza, i brata
jego Jana, którzy też byli w łodzi i naprawiali sieci. Zaraz
ich powołał, a oni zostawili ojca swego, Zebedeusza,
razem z najemnikami w łodzi i poszli za Nim.

REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ NIEDIZELNYCH...
Jezus zaprasza nas do wolności wewnętrznej, to jest
do takiej postawy serca, która pozwala nam usłyszeć
Jego słowo pośród innych głosów. Wybór takiej postawy
wiąże się zwykle z doświadczeniem odrzucenia przez
świat, nawet przez najbliższych, którym słuchanie
Chrystusa wydaje się czymś bezużytecznym. Tylko
człowiek prawdziwie zakochany w głosie Pana – w Jego
słowie, które nie przemija – może zdobyć świat dla
Chrystusa. Tak czynili uczniowie, którzy siecią słowa
Bożego pozyskiwali ludzi.

UN NUEVO AMANECER
Hoy escuchamos la manera en que Jonás, enviado por
Dios para advertir a la gente, pasa como un torbellino por
las calles de Nínive, asustando a los ciudadanos hasta el
pánico. ¡Y funciona! Dios tiene un cambio de corazón, al
ver “sus obras” como la gente se aparta del mal (Jonás
3:10). Un nuevo amanecer.
Luego escuchamos a Pablo decir a los corintios: “Este
mundo que vemos es pasajero” (1 Corintios 7:31). Pide
un cambio de corazón. Sin llegar a decir que no hagan sus
actividades diarias, les insta, misteriosamente, a vivir
“como si” no están haciendo las cosas que están haciendo.
Es un nuevo amanecer.
Finalmente, Jesús se encuentra en la orilla y clama: “El
Reino de Dios ya está cerca” (Marcos 1:14). Simón y
Andrés abandonan sus redes –e incluso a su padre– y lo
siguen. Es un nuevo amanecer.
Todo el mundo tiene que cambiar cuando amanece un
nuevo día: los ninivitas, los corintios, los apóstoles, ¡hasta
Jesús! ¿No es hoy un nuevo amanecer para nosotros
también?
