PARISH PICNIC JUNE 14, 2015
Our annual summer picnic was a big success in spite
of the very HOT WEATHER. A very big THANK YOU
to all the volunteers who worked all day, as well as to
those who donated the delicious food that was sold.
We had 15 very happy people who were the winners of
the raffle drawing, and one happy person who won the
50/50 drawing. After expenses of $1,824, we made
$4,313 for the parish. Thank you to all who came and
made this possible. Fr. Luke

Our food pantry is in need of the following
items: canned vegetables and fruit, soup, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, tomato sauce.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated. (Please
note that we are unable to store food that is packaged
in boxes or cellophane bags.)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When you are thinking about traditions in the Church,
1563 is a “watershed” year. The Council of Trent began a
reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and
set many of our present practices in place. For the first
time, engaged people were absolutely required to appear
before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his
presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics
are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really
didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to
the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and
somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a canopy for the nuptial blessing
started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the
presents for the couple to the church and the addition of
fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. The Council of
Trent tried to preserve local customs, but the long‑term
effect was to standardize celebrations everywhere in the
world.

THE WIND AND THE SEA
JOHN THE BAPTIST June 24
Living along the shores of Lake Superior - the “big
lake,” as the locals call it - you can often hear the advice,
“Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who
know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for
its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into
kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do.
The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of
the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean
itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and
set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s
Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and
churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds.
But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor
and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they
respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.
The Church will have an opportunity this
Wednesday, June 24th, to celebrate & reflect on the birth
of John the Baptist. John is often described as the last of
the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between
Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John the
Baptizer is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus
Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message:
repent, the kingdom is near at hand, one greater than I is
coming.
Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in
camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of
true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by
God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he
said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah
49:3). John’s humility -“I am not he”-was surpassed only
by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who
followed.

SAINT JOHN FISHER (1469-1535) AND
SAINT THOMAS MORE (1477-1535) June 22
From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man For All Seasons to
Showtime’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears
himself still: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity,
remarried widower and affectionate father delighting in a
lively household - four children, a pet monkey, even a
paid jester! And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet
champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul
II named him “Patron of Statesmen and Politicians,”
citing More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in
government service, on behalf of the poorest and most
marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion
of education for all sectors of society. More’s decision for
principle over politics, conscience over convenience
prompted his final words: “I die the King’s good servant,
but God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John
Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and
repudiation of the papacy. When the Pope named the
imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t
bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s
head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t
a right conscience worth the pain of standing alone?

Gdy zapadł wieczór owego dnia, Jezus rzekł do swoich
uczniów: Przeprawmy się na drugą stronę. Zostawili więc
tłum, a Jego zabrali, tak jak był w łodzi. Także inne łodzie
płynęły z Nim. Naraz zerwał się gwałtowny wicher. Fale
biły w łódź, tak że łódź już się napełniała. On zaś spał w
tyle łodzi na wezgłowiu. Zbudzili Go i powiedzieli do
Niego: Nauczycielu, nic Cię to nie obchodzi, że giniemy?

HUMOR DNIA
W kościele w ławce obok małego Zygmunta siedzi
starsza kobieta. Zbliża się kościelny z tacą. Kobieta
zaczyna nerwowo przetrząsać torebkę. Chłopiec trąca ją
w bok i szepcze: - Niech pani weźmie moją dychę, a ja
się schowam pod ławkę!
Ksiądz naprawia na plebani płot. Otoczyła go gromadka
dzieci. - Co moje dzadki - pyta ksiądz - chcecie się
nauczyć jak się wbija gwoździe? - Nie, chcemy usłyszeć
co mówi ksiądz, jak się walnie młotkiem w palec :)
REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
Kim właściwie jest Chrystus? - zastanawiali się
uczniowie, gdy uciszył burzę na jeziorze. Znali Go
przecież dobrze, widzieli cuda, słuchali Jego „nauki
z mocą”... Ich spojrzenie na Chrystusa było jednak
przyćmione
ludzkim
niepełnym
poznaniem
i rozumieniem. „Jeżeli nawet według ciała poznaliśmy
Chrystusa, to już więcej nie znamy Go w ten sposób” –
pisał do Koryntian św. Paweł. To nie poznanie „według
ciała”, ale spojrzenie wiary pozwala rozpoznać
w Chrystusie Króla i Boga, którego władzy poddane są
wicher i morze, choroby, złe duchy, a nawet śmierć.
Pana, który najgwałtowniejsze burze miotające nami na
morzu życia zmienia w „powiew łagodny”. I nawet gdy
wydaje się nieobecny w łodzi naszej duszy, nie
przestaje czuwać i wiedzie nas „do upragnionej
przystani”.

ACERCA DE LA PATERNIDAD
Un padre es más que cien profesores.

Jesús promete a sus discípulos una vida en
abundancia (Juan 10:10). Él desea lo mejor para nosotros
y quiere que estemos bien en todos los aspectos de
nuestra vida: familia y amistades, trabajo, economía,
salud, etcétera. Sin embargo, Jesús también nos promete
la persecución y el maltrato (Marcos 10:29; Mateo 5:11;
Lucas 6:22; Juan 15:18).
La vida abundante es bella pero nunca fácil. La vida
cristiana es como toda vida humana; tiene momentos de
tranquilidad y de tempestad. Así como un día nos brilla el
sol, otro día nos sacuden los vientos y nuestras pequeñas
lanchas parecen inundarse.
No hay que desanimarse o asustarse cuando lleguen
estas tormentas. Más bien, hay que recordar el Evangelio
(Marcos 4:35-41) donde Jesús duerme en la barca de sus
discípulos. Es interesante el detalle de Jesús quien,
cansado y tranquilo, duerme mientras el mar sacude a la
barca y a los discípulos. Menos mal que se les ocurrió
recurrir al Señor. Y tú, ¿qué haces cuando el viento sopla
y la vida te estremece? No temas, despierta a Cristo a
quien llevas en tu corazón.

EL VIENTO Y EL MAR
Los que conocen bien el Lago Superior le tienen un
saludable respeto, y siempre están alerta sobre sus
caprichosos cambios de ánimo. Muchos barcos hundidos
y muchos botes hechos astillas son testigos de lo que el
lago puede hacer cuando está de mal humor.
Las lecturas de este domingo nos evocan memorias de
ese lago, del poderoso río Mississippi o del océano
mismo. ¿Quién, fuera de Dios, podrá controlar esas aguas
poderosas, o imponerles límites, diciendo “Hasta aquí
llegarás”? El lago que describe el Evangelio de hoy era un
lago en el que se levantaban súbitas tormentas, en las que
los vientos huracanados agitaban olas enormes.
Pero estas fuerzas tan poderosas se someten a la
voluntad de Dios. Los marineros y los pescadores le
tienen un saludable respeto al poder de las aguas. Pero
más todavía respetan el poder del Creador del viento y del
mar.
