Słowa kluczowe: historia Zakładu Zaburzeń Czynnościowych Układu Stomatognatycznego.
The Department of Functional Disorders of
the Masticatory System was opened on October 1,
2002 in view of the need to extend students’
knowledge in the field of pathophysiology of the
stomatognathic system. As evidenced by numer−
ous epidemiological studies, painful dysfunctions
of the masticatory system and associated facial
and head pains are extremely common and for this
reason they were recognized as third social disease
in dentistry, after dental caries and periodontopa−
thy. Teresa Maślanka, D.M.D., who had published
65 papers dealing with this branch of dentistry in
her professional career, was appointed acting head
of the Department [1, 2]. Initially the Department
employed two assistants: Ewa Kalecińska, B.D.S.
and Aleksandra Kraśnicka−Ściborska, B.D.S., who
left the Department on September 30, 2006.
The research studies carried out at the
Department concerned mainly the etiology of
functional disorders of the stomatognathic system
(the role of occlusion disorders, occupational bur−
den, posture defects), improvement of the diag−
nostics of the disorders by means of axiography
and an electronic device for functional examina−
tion of temporomandibular joints, as well as the
methods of complex treatment [3]. In the 4 years
of history of the Department, 23 papers were pub−
lished, two of them in foreign professional jour−
nals. The research workers participated in 30 sci−
entific conferences in Poland and 5 abroad and
delivered 23 presentations and 41 posters. In 2002,
Ewa Kalecińska was granted the “Prix du GIRSO”
award for her paper presented at the GIRSO
Conference in Paredes (Portugal). Six other pre−
History of Department of Functional Disorders of the Masticatory System
sentations were delivered at regional meetings of
Polish Dental Association (Wrocław, Opole,
Jelenia Góra).
On 8–10 May, 2003 the research workers of
the Department under the leadership of Teresa
Maślanka, D.M.D. organized III Symposium of
the Polish Society for Masticatory Organ Dysfunc−
tions with the participation of 280 physicians (den−
tists, radiologists, psychiatrists, neurologists,
anaesthesiologists dealing with pain management,
as well as specialists in manual medicine). In
2002, Ewa Kalecińska was the member of the
Organizing Committee of VI Journees Franco−
−Polonaise de la Sante in Wrocław and 48th GIRSO
Congress, which took place in Wrocław in 2004
(for the first time in Poland).
Teresa Maślanka, D.M.D. is a board member
of the Polish Society for Masticatory Organ
Dysfunctions, and Ewa Kalecińska, D.D.S. is the
member of Revision Committee of the Society.
The Department’s research workers are members
of the Polish Dental Association, Polish Society
for Masticatory Organ Dysfunctions and GIRSO.
As part of undergraduate training, the
Department workers hold lectures, seminars and
classes for 2nd and 4th year dental students con−
cerning two fields of dentistry: masticatory organ
physiology and occlusion standards and functions
of the stomatognathic system. Post−graduate train−
ing involved supervision of specialization of three
dentists and five lectures delivered as part of
excellence courses. Moreover, the Depart−
ment’s staff participated actively in the Festival of
Polish Science and Dentamed organized annually
in the region of Lower Silesia.
On October 1, 2006 Teresa Maślanka, D.M.D.
retired and Włodzimierz Więckiewicz, D.M.D. [4],
who had published 67 papers in Polish and foreign
journals, delivered 38 presentations and presented 6
posters, became head of the Department. Włodzi−
mierz Więckiewicz D.M.D. participated in the fol−
lowing internships: 1) in 1986, at the Department of
Dental Prosthetics, Pomeranian Medical University
in Szczecin under the supervision of Doc.
D. Malejewska Ph.D. and Doc. W. Dreher Ph.D.;
2) in 1987, at the Department of Dental Prosthetics,
Warsaw Medical University under the supervision
of Prof. E. Spiechowicz, Ph.D. and at the
Department of Maxillofacial Surgery under the
supervision of Prof. L. Kryst Ph.D.; 3) in 1991, at
Facial Prosthesis Outpatient Department under the
supervision of A. Kopczyński, D.M.D.; 4) in 2003
at the Department of Dental prosthetics, Collegium
Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow under
the supervision of Prof. W. Majewski, Ph.D. S. He
was also trained in 13 courses on various implants
and lasers used in dentistry.
127
W. Więckiewicz, D.M.D., obtained the doctoral
degree in 1991 and in 2004 he defended the habil−
itation thesis and became Habilitation Doctor [5].
Moreover, Więckiewicz Ph.D. Med. is Chairman
of the Revision Committee, Polish Society for
Masticatory Organ Dysfunctions, Chairman of the
Revision Committee, Polish Dental Association,
Lower Silesian Branch, Vice−Chairman of the
Lower Silesian Branch of the Polish Association
of Dental Implantology, in the years 1999–2002 he
was member of the Board of the Polish Dental
Association Prosthetic Section. Since 2002 he has
been the member of the Polish Society for Medical
Engineering.
Moreover, Włodzimierz Więckiewicz, Ph.D.
Med., participates actively in the work of Wrocław
Medical University – he is a member of the Sena−
te Arbitrary Committee, the Senate Disciplinary
Committee for Academic Teachers and the Senate
Disciplinary Committee for Students. At the Fa−
culty od Dentistry, he is the Faculty Board mem−
ber as well as a member of the Nostrification
Committee, Awards Committee, and Committee
appointing academic teachers to their positions.
At present, the Department of Functional
Disorders of the Masticatory System employs Ewa
Kalecińska, B.D.S., Joanna Sokalska, B.D.S. is
a postgraduate student for doctoral degree and
there are two residents: Mirosława Wawrzyńczak−
−Głuszko, B.D.S. and Artur Predel, B.D.S., and
a dental technician – Zdzisław Baczmaga.
The activity of the Department of Functional
Disorders of the Masticatory System involves the
following fields in dentistry: physiology of the
masticatory organ, occlusal norms and functions
of the stomatognathic system, implantoprosthet−
ics, postsurgical prosthetics. As part of undergrad−
uation education, the Department holds lectures,
seminars and classes for 2nd, 4th and 5th year dental
students. Postgraduate education includes supervi−
sion of specialization course for two dentists.
Recently, two lectures have been delivered as part
of excellence courses at the meetings of the local
branches of Polish Dental Association in Opole
and Ciechocinek. Reports and posters from the
Department were presented at the scientific con−
gresses organized in Palermo (Italy), Dublin
(Ireland), Bratyslava (Slovakia), Ostrawa (Czech
Republic), Gdańsk and Ustroń. In 2006, seven
reports were published, another report and three
posters were presented at conferences.
In the past 4 years, about 2000 patients with
painful dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system
were admitted and treated.
In this time, five research projects were real−
ized: 1. The effectiveness of prosthetic appliance in
reduction of snoring and sleep apnoea and their

effect on the function of temporomandibular joint;
2. The stomatognathic system and human posture;
3. The effectiveness of intraoral appliance in reduc−
tion of snoring and sleep apnoea. The effect on the
function of temporomandibular joint; 4. The use of
electronic analysis of temporomandibular joint
function in the diagnostics of painful dysfunctions
of the joints and their treatment; 5. The role of
proffesional burden in the etiology of painful dys−
functions of the masticatory system.
The research studies will involve the diagnostics
and therapy of patients: with functional disorders of
the stomatognathic system, requiring implantopros−
thetic treatment, after surgical procedures (prosthe−
ses with obturators, facial prostheses).
Moreover, new fields of research studies will
be offered and also new materials that might be
useful for therapeutic purposes will be investigat−
ed. The Department will continue to realize scien−
tific projects as part of grants ordered by the
University and Committee for Scientific Research
and results of the projects shall be published in
Polish and foreign professional journals as well as
presented at meetings, symposia, conferences.
Also, the Department will continue its activity in
the field of postgraduate training of dentists.
