VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER DANCE
On Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14th, St. Rose
of Lima will hold a dinner dance to commemorate this
day. The event will be held at the St. Joseph’s Center
from 8:00PM to 11:00PM. Please come and share this
special occasion with your loved ones and other parishioners, while enjoying great food and music.
Tickets can be purchased for a donation of $30 per
person in the rectory during regular office hours. Please
purchase your tickets by February 9th so we can have a
headcount for planning purposes. Flyers are available at
the church doors.

ST. EDMUND PREP HIGH SCHOOL
St. Edmund is hosting a new “fun-raiser” event - Radio
Bingo! Recognize tunes from the 60s, 70s & 80s, mark

A CHRISTMAS REPRISE
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the
Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the
Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the
Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit
longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second
Epiphany.”
The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as
Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to
prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews
reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had
a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.”
The Gospel finds
the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his
human parents once again surprised and in awe over the
events surround his birth.
In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the
temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May
we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and
the “favor of God.”
By Candlemas, forty days after Christmas, February 2,
the season of Christ’s coming has depleted our candle
supply. Soon, the parish will order a new paschal candle
from a catalogue or candlemaker, or in some
communities, wax will be collected to be melted and
molded. Last year’s paschal candle shows the wear and
tear of summer heat, or many funerals or baptisms.
Paschal candles have been around since at least the
fourth century, when Constantine’s biographer Eusebius
reported that the night of the sacred vigil was
“transformed into the brilliancy of day, by lighting
throughout the city pillars of wax, while burning lamps in
every place so that the splendor of this night was brighter
than the brightest daylight.”
Light was a precious commodity in the ancient world,
and this lavish use of precious beeswax was a sign of the
Christian’s call to bear Christ’s light into the world’s
darkness. In a pre-electric age, a whole city aglow from
the paschal flame must have been a glorious sight, and a
reminder to every baptized Christian of our vocation to
“be the light of the world.”

ŚWIĘTO OFIAROWANIA PAǸSKIEGO
Gdy upłynęły dni oczyszczenia Maryi według Prawa
Mojżeszowego, przynieśli Jezusa do Jerozolimy, aby Go
przedstawić Panu. Tak bowiem jest napisane w Prawie
Pańskim: Każde pierworodne dziecko płci męskiej będzie
poświęcone Panu. Mieli również złożyć w ofierze parę
synogarlic albo dwa młode gołębie, zgodnie z przepisem
Prawa Pańskiego. A żył w Jerozolimie człowiek, imieniem
Symeon. Był to człowiek sprawiedliwy i pobożny,
wyczekiwał pociechy Izraela, a Duch Święty spoczywał na
nim. Jemu Duch Święty objawił, że nie ujrzy śmierci, aż
zobaczy Mesjasza Pańskiego. Za natchnieniem więc
Ducha przyszedł do świątyni. A gdy Rodzice wnosili
Dzieciątko Jezus, aby postąpić z Nim według zwyczaju
Prawa, on wziął Je w objęcia, błogosławił Boga i mówił:
Teraz, o Władco, pozwól odejść słudze Twemu w pokoju,
według Twojego słowa. Bo moje oczy ujrzały Twoje
zbawienie, któreś przygotował wobec wszystkich
narodów: światło na oświecenie pogan i chwałę ludu
Twego, Izraela. A Jego ojciec i Matka dziwili się temu, co
o Nim mówiono. Symeon zaś błogosławił Ich i rzekł do
Maryi, Matki Jego: Oto Ten przeznaczony jest na upadek
i na powstanie wielu w Izraelu, i na znak, któremu
sprzeciwiać się będą. A Twoją duszę miecz przeniknie,
aby na jaw wyszły zamysły serc wielu. Była tam również
prorokini Anna, córka Fanuela z pokolenia Asera, bardzo
podeszła w latach. Od swego panieństwa siedem lat żyła z
mężem i pozostawała wdową. Liczyła już osiemdziesiąty
czwarty rok życia. Nie rozstawała się ze świątynią, służąc
Bogu w postach i modlitwach dniem i nocą. Przyszedłszy
w tej właśnie chwili, sławiła Boga i mówiła o Nim
wszystkim, którzy oczekiwali wyzwolenia Jerozolimy. A
gdy wypełnili wszystko według Prawa Pańskiego, wrócili
do Galilei, do swego miasta - Nazaret. Dziecię zaś rosło i
nabierało mocy, napełniając się mądrością, a łaska Boża
spoczywała na Nim. Łk 4,12-23
Światło zapalone w ciemności świeci dla wszystkich,
płomień jednej tylko świecy ma moc rozproszyć mrok.
Jezus, wnoszony do świątyni w Jerozolimie, staje się
„światłością świata”, a przez to także znakiem sprzeciwu
wobec ciemności grzechu i mocy szatana. Syn Boży jest
światłem, które także dzisiaj wyprowadza nas z iluzji,
kłamstw, wszelkiego fałszu i prowadzi ku prawdzie, a
ostatecznie ku Bogu – „światłości bez końca”.

RETORNO A LA NAVIDAD
La celebración de hace tres semanas del Bautismo del
Señor señaló el fin “oficial” del tiempo de Navidad para
la Iglesia. La fiesta de hoy de la Presentación del Señor
parece extender la celebración un poco más allá. En
realidad, algunos han nombrado esta fiesta una “Segunda
Epifanía”.
La primera lectura nos recuerda la anticipación del
Adviento, como escribe Malaquías: “Envío a mi
mensajero para que prepare el camino ante mí”. La
lectura de los Hebreos nos recuerda la Encarnación,
proclamando que Jesús tuvo una “parte” de la misma
“carne y sangre”. El Evangelio encuentra al niño Jesús en
su primera visita a Jerusalén, y a sus padres una vez más
sorprendidos y asombrados por los acontecimientos de su
nacimiento.
En la sencillez del pesebre, en la grandeza del templo,
en la domesticidad de Nazaret, Jesús viene. ¡Que
lleguemos a conocerlo y por ello nos encontremos llenos
de “sabiduría” y de la “gracia de Dios!”
