SHARING OUR BLESSINGS -March 6, 2011
Weekly $6466.80 (incl. $383.75 in loose money); Diocesan

Special thanks for the generous contribution this week. God bless
you!
Stewardship Note: “It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you
worship and him alone shall you serve.” (Matthew 4:10). The
world tempts us with so much. Like Jesus on the top of the
mountain, we can all see magnificent possessions, power,
adventures, activities or accomplishments that tempt us to push
God into the background of our lives. Yet, we must follow the
example of Jesus and back away from the temptations of the world
so that we have more time in our lives to worship and serve God.
Lent provides us with the perfect opportunity to make a change that
will last not just for forty days but for a lifetime.
FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT - March 13, 2011
“The Lord, your God, shall you
worship and
Him alone shall you serve.”
– Matthew 4:10
THE LENTEN SEASON offers each one of us at St.
Joseph Basilica plenty of opportunities for devotional
practices. We should participate not only in the Masses but
in the Stations of the Cross, Gorzkie Zale, pastoral
programs, intensify our prayer, and read the scripture aloud.
Special emphasis should be placed on children particularly
those in Catholic schools or Religious Education programs.
It would be very helpful if the parents made their own
personal resolutions for the Lenten season and encourage
their children to make sacrifices. Lent is a great opportunity
to strengthen their faith and renew spiritual life through
participation in the Mass and other devotional services.
Devotional Schedule: Sundays at 3 p.m. Gorzkie Zale;
Fridays Stations of the Cross at 1 p.m. in English with the
students of St. Joseph School and at 7 p.m. in Polish.
Confessions: Every Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.; mornings
during the week after the last Mass.
The second collection this weekend is designated for the
Utility and Energy Costs
Next weekend the collection will be taken for the Church in
Latin America
ST. JOSEPH FEAST DAY - ODPUST
On March 19 St. Joseph Basilica will celebrate the feast day of
St. Joseph, patron of our Basilica community. A nine-day novena,
in our particular intentions, began on Friday, the 11th of March. St.
Joseph as patron of the Universal Church enjoys great popularity
and devotional presence. Numerous shrines, churches and basilicas
dedicated to his name are filled with pilgrims and visitors who seek
his powerful intercession. May this novena during the Lenten
season be a great occasion for each one of us to obtain the needed
blessings in our personal and family life.
St. Joseph Basilica has the privilege to grant everyone who visits
the Basilica on this day and fulfills the regular obligations a plenary
or partial indulgence. The 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday will be
concelebrated.
RETREAT
The Lenten season is associated with missions, retreats, and
everyone who claims belonging to the Catholic Church feels the
need to participate in this sacred time of personal renewal. For the
first time we will have a retreat in English for all Catholic parishes
of Webster at the same time beginning on April 2nd and ending on
April 7th. Father Sean McGillicuddy, a Redemptorist priest from
the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (the Mission Church),
in Boston will be the Retreat Master. He will preach in each of the
parishes at the weekend Masses of April 2nd and 3rd. From April 4th
through the 7th, the retreat will be held in the morning, noon and
evening. Morning Mass will be at Sacred Heart at 9:00 a.m. with
special preaching and an opportunity for Confession each day.
Noontime Mass will be offered at St. Joseph’s with retreat
preaching and an opportunity for confession on Tuesday and
Thursday of this grace filled week.
Page 3
Evening services will be at St. Louis with a rosary prayed at 6:30
for those who wish to come. The retreat service, benediction and
preaching will begin at 7 p.m., with an opportunity for
confession each evening. The retreat will conclude with Mass on
Thursday, April 7th in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Also, during this same period, we will have a retreat in the
Polish language conducted by Father Olszewski at St. Joseph
Basilica. Please reserve these days for your spiritual
enrichment in the language of your choice.
LENTEN SEMINARS
We are pleased to offer parishioners and friends during the
Lenten season three seminars for personal benefit on
Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at St. Joseph School. The
following topics will be presented: March 23rd Selected Topics
on Lenten Spirituality; March 30th Vocation and the Role of
Laity especially Women in the Catholic Church according to the
teaching of John Paul II; Wednesday April 13th John Paul II and
Dialogue with Youth - Hope of the World.
The seminars are free but we do require prior registration for
planning purposes. Please call the rectory at 508-943-0467.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH MARY
Come and join the Holy Rosary Sodality pray the Stations
with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, on Friday, March 25th at 7 p.m.
The devotions will be in English. Mary made that first way of the
cross with Jesus. These stations attempt to present that
viewpoint. Let us all now join in that spiritual journey with an
appreciation of what Jesus did for us.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE
RCIA-During Lent, our RCIA group moves into their final
period of preparation for the sacraments. They have been
nourished by the graces of various liturgical Rites throughout the
RCIA process, which have helped them to embrace God’s call.
In Lent, God pours purifying and enlightening graces upon them,
through the spiritual preparation they receive in RCIA sessions,
the special Rites that mark the Sundays of Lent, and the prayers
offered for them by the faithful.
At the 9:30 a.m. Mass this morning, after the homily we will be
celebrating with them the “Rite of Sending” which prepares them
to go to St. Paul’s Cathedral this afternoon for a special Rite with
other people in our Diocese who are in RCIA. Please pray for
them.

Anxiety is almost a given in today’s world. How do we take to heart
the advice given in the Gospel? “Do not be anxious about tomorrow.
Let the day’s own troubles be sufficient for the day.”Consider making
a weekly appointment with Jesus in the powerful silence of the Chapel
of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in the Emmaus Center. The doors of
the chapel are always open. Current hours that are in need of a
commitment: Sunday 4-5 a.m.; Monday 4-5 p.m.; Tuesday 3-4 a.m. and
