Advent Reconciliation Liturgy
On Tuesday, December 20, the
parish will celebrate the sacrament of
Reconciliation in a communal liturgy
appropriate to the season of Advent.
The celebration will begin at 7:00
p.m. in the Church.
Again, we wish to encourage all
who have been away from the church
or the sacraments to take this opportunity to return. All will be asked to acknowledge their sinfulness before God and the gathered community, to seek
mercy, and to receive the church’s absolution. In this way
we can enter into Christmas reconciled with God, neighbor and self.
Please pray that through this celebration some will be
brought home, released from the burden of sin and guilt,
and begin healing in Christ.
Individual confessions are heard each Saturday morning following the 8:00 AM Mass continuing until all are
heard, and on December 17th from 3:00-4:30 p.m.

A Prayer for the Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch forth your
mighty arm to strengthen and
protect the men and women of
our Armed Forces. As they face
the myriad of challenges and
decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be
anchored by their faith, protected
by your presence and comforted by the knowledge
that they are loved by you and by this community of
faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and
all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may
truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the
honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen

To the Catholics of the Archdiocese of Chicago
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Several times in recent years, the members of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council have encouraged me to use the parish bulletins to address topics they have brought to me or issues I want to
comment on in the light of our faith. I plan to do so about once a month, and I am grateful to
the pastors and the parishes for making space in the bulletins.
Usually letters from me have endorsed various collections or emergency needs. That form of
correspondence will continue, but I also want to speak from time to time about faith in daily
life and the Church in relation to family and society.
Parish bulletins are probably the most read publications in the Archdiocese, although I encourage everyone to subscribe to The Catholic New World, the paper for all Catholics in Cook and
Lake Counties. Parish bulletins would be even more widely read if more Catholics were at
Mass each Sunday or its Saturday vigil. Since weekly Sunday Eucharistic worship is a commandment of God and a precept of the Church, smaller participation in weekly Mass means that
more people are putting their eternal salvation in jeopardy.
You’ll be reading this during Advent, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the
human race. Christ wants us to be saved more than we want it ourselves, but not even Christ
can save us without our cooperation. Invite one of your friends or a non-practicing member of
your family to Mass in preparation for Christmas. It’s a dangerous invitation, because Christ
changes people who worship him, and most of us resist conversion. Our eternal life, however,
depends upon it.
You are in my prayers during Advent and the Christmas season; please keep me in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, OMI
Archbishop of Chicago

My Birthday
As you well know, we are getting closer to
my birthday. Every year there is a celebration in my honor and I think that this year
the celebration will be repeated.
During this time there are many
people shopping for gifts, there are
many radio announcements, TV
commercials, and in every part of the
world everyone is talking that my
birthday is getting closer and
closer.
It is really very nice to know,
that at least once a year, some
people think of me. As you know,
the celebration of my birthday
began many years ago.
At first people seemed to understand
and be thankful for all that I did for them.
But in these times, no one seems to know
the reason for the celebration.
Family and friends get together and
have a lot of fun, but they don't know the
meaning of the celebration. I remember
that last year there was a great feast in my
honor. The dinner table was full of delicious foods, pastries, fruits, assorted nuts
and chocolates. The decorations were
exquisite and there were many many beautifully wrapped gifts.
But, do you want to know something? I
wasn't invited. I was the guest of honor
and they didn't remember to send me an
invitation. The party was for me, but when
that great day came, I was left outside,
they closed the door in my face... and I
wanted to be with them and share their
table.
In truth, that didn't surprise me because
in the last few years all close their doors to
me. Since I wasn't invited, I decided to
enter the party without making any noise.
I went in and stood in a corner.
They were all drinking; there were some
who were drunk and telling jokes and
laughing at everything. They were having
a grand time. To top it all, this big fat
man all dressed in red wearing a long
white beard entered the room yelling HoHo-Ho! He seemed drunk. He sat on the
sofa and all the children ran to him, saying: "Santa Claus, Santa Claus" as if the
party were in his honor! At midnight
all the people began to hug each
other; I extended my arms waiting for
someone to hug me and do you know
no one hugged me.
Suddenly they all began to
share gifts. They opened them
one by one with great expectation. When all had been
opened, I looked to see if,
maybe, there was one for me.
What would you feel if on your
birthday everybody shared gifts and you
did not get one?
I then understood that I was unwanted
at that party and quietly left. Every year it
gets worse. People only remember the gifts,
the parties, the eating and drinking, and
nobody remembers me. I would like this
Christmas for you to allow me to enter into
your life. I would like that you recognize
the fact that two thousand years ago I
came into this world to give my life to you,
on the cross, to save you.
Today, I only want that you believe this
with all your heart. I want to share something with you. As many didn't invite me to
their party, I will have my own celebration,
a grandiose party that no one has ever
imagined, a spectacular party. I'm still
making the final arrangements...
Today I am sending out many invitations and there is an invitation for you. I
want to know if you wish to attend, I will
make a reservation for you and write your
name with golden letters in my great guest
book. Only those on the guest list will be
invited to the party. Those who don't
answer the invite, will be left outside. Be
prepared because when all is ready you will
be part of my great party.
See you soon. I Love you!
Jesus

News from the Girl Scouts
Girl Scout Troop 8 participated in a Community Walls program with
Hosteling International and Girls Scouts of Chicago. The program consisted of girl scout troops painting a mural depicting their neighborhood/community area. Troop 8 covered the Cragin/MontClare Neighborhood. Eleven
girls - Natalia Alvarez, Karolina Alvarez, Holly Holod, Jordan Holod,
Krystyna Klos, Rebecca McManamon, Judith Mendoza, Julia
Montalvo, Jacqueline Richardson, Rhiannon Taylor and Marlee Usher
and the two leaders - Joyce McGinniss and Fran Richardson participated
in the painting.
The murals were unveiled at a reception on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at
Hosteling International-Chicago (24 E. Congress Parkway). We were one
of 20 troops that participated from Girl Scouts of Chicago. The girls then
had the opportunity to spend the night at the hostel.

Do katolików Archidiecezji Chicago
Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie:
Kilka razy, w ostatnich latach, cz³onkowie Archidiecezjalnej Rady Duszpasterskiej, zachêcili mnie, by
Biuletyny parafialne s¹ prawdopodobnie najczêœciej czytanymi publikacjami w Archidiecezji.
Korzystaj¹c z tej okazji, chcia³bym bardzo zachêciæ wszystkich do prenumeraty The Catholic New
World, jedynej katolickiej gazety wydawanej na terenie powiatu, Cook i Lake.
Przypuszczam, ¿e biuletyny parafialne by³yby jeszcze wiêcej poczytne, gdyby wiêcej katolików
Czytaæ to bêdziecie podczas Adwentu, w okresie przygotowania siê do uroczystoœci narodzenia siê
Zbawiciela rodzaju ludzkiego.
niebezpieczne zaproszenie, poniewa¿ Chrystus zmienia tych, którzy oddaj¹ Mu czeœæ a wielu z nas boi
siê tej zmiany. Niestety, od tej zmiany w³aœnie zale¿y nasze ¿ycie wieczne.
Zapewniam, ze bêdê pamiêta³ o was w moich modlitwach podczas Adwentu i ca³ego okresu Bo¿ego
Narodzenia i polecam siê równie¿ byœcie pamiêtali o mnie w swoich modlitwach.
Wasz szczerze oddany w Chrystusie,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Arcybiskup Chicago

ON SNIPPETS OF CONVERSATIONS, WITH CHRISTMAS IN SIGHT
Copyright 2005 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
About this time last year, while finishing up my Christmas
shopping in Carson’s at the Harlem-Irving Plaza, I overheard two teenage girls walking past me in the opposite
direction. Said one to the other, “A rug will be good enough
for Mom…” I smiled when I heard the words, and I wrote
them down in the little notebook I carry with me for such
occasions, when simple conversation speaks volumes about
who we are and what we are about. I saw myself in these
particular words, for I can recall many times when my
mother was alive that I needed something for her, and quickly. I never got her a rug (which, by the way, seems like a
decent gift to me), but you can bet your holiday dish towels
that I got her plenty of it’s-good-enough-for-Mom presents
over the years.
And about this time last year – not long after my visit to
the HIP – while finishing up my Christmas shopping in JC
Penney’s at Golf-Mil, I overheard two young (twenty-something?) women walking past me in the opposite direction.
Said one to the other, “Let’s just get her earrings; who cares
if she wears them?” Once again, I smiled when I heard the
words, and once again, I wrote them down so that I wouldn’t forget them. I wondered whose gift they were discussing:
a mutual girlfriend’s? a mom’s? a grandmother’s? It doesn’t
matter, I guess, because the feeling behind the words was
clear enough: Let’s just get this over with. Man, how many
times have I felt the same way with the holiday glitz pressing in? Clearly, sometimes, it’s not the thought that counts.
But it was about this time last year – probably half-anhour after Penney’s – while finishing up my Christmas
shopping (really) at the Golf-Mil Sears that I overheard
something which went way deeper than the previous two
snippets of conversation. This time, I walked past a husband
and wife (I think) who were standing by an end-aisle display
of boxed shirt-and-sweater sets. The wife seemed calm
enough, but the husband looked like me on a bad day: irritated, tense, anxious. He was holding one of the shirt-andsweater boxes – something with red and green, as I recall –
and he said to his wife entreatingly, as though he dearly
needed an answer: “What are we trying to do here?”
It’s the fourth Sunday of Advent, but because of the play
of days on this year’s calendar, we still have a full week
until Christmas. Many of us – at least a certain columnist I
know – will be spending time and money at Carson’s and
Penney’s and Sears finishing up the shopping, and that’s
fine. ‘Tis the season. But when we’re out there, let’s keep in
front of us that last snippet of overheard conversation: What
are we trying to do here? And let’s keep one more snippet in
front of us, too…a snippet between a mysterious stranger
and a young woman that we’ve been overhearing for as long
as most of us can remember. Actually, we overhear it again
today: “You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the
name of Jesus. Great will be his dignity, and he will be
called Son of the Most High…” Like I said three weeks ago,
see you at the manger.
