EASTER SUNDAY COLLECTION FOR EDUCATIONAL
EXCELLENCE. The second collection on Easter Sunday is
traditionally dedicated to Educational Excellence at St. Joseph
School. Much has been done to upgrade the equipment and
technology. Unfortunately, a dollar sign is attached to all our
improvements, therefore, I ask parents, parishioners, alumni, visitors
and friends to generously respond according to their means to this
Easter Sunday collection. May God bless your generosity.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
April 17, 2011
God greatly exalted (Christ)
and bestowed on him the name
which is above every name.
– Philippians 2:9
HOSANNA!
“Hosanna to the Son of David;
blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord; hosanna in the highest”
(Matthew 21:9). With these words
the Church enters the holiest of
weeks, commemorating the passion,
death, and resurrection of Christ.
When the people of Jerusalem cried
out with their “hosanna,” they were
using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant,
“Pray, save us.” The king to whom they were shouting
eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far
from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood
of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and
life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put
their faith and trust in him.
The second collection this weekend will be taken for the
Partners in Charity donations
Next weekend is the traditional collection for Educational
Excellence in St. Joseph School. Please be generous. The
children of St. Joseph School will serve as collectors.
PENITENTIAL SERVICE
This Monday, April 18, the Sacrament of Penance for all the
faithful of St. Joseph Basilica will be held at 6 p.m. We encourage
and invite everyone to be reconciled with God and one another and
joyfully celebrate the resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday.
The presence of several priests from different parishes will be
available for your convenience. Confessions will be heard in both
English and Polish.
LITURGICAL SERVICES DURING HOLY WEEK
Triduum. Why we celebrate one event over three days.
The Paschal Triduum, Latin for “three days,” commemorates
Christ’s redemptive passage through death, burial and resurrection
to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event
made up of three distinct parts. In accordance with the custom in
biblical times, each “day” begins in the evening.
The first day of the Triduum begins with the Lord’s Supper on
the evening of Holy Thursday. In the silence of the tomb on Good
Friday the death of Jesus, Son of God, is confirmed. He did not
simply lose consciousness, he truly died. Holy Saturday, while the
Church silently prepares for the Easter Vigil celebration in the
evening, the reality of Jesus’ death and resurrection comes into
focus. Easter morning is the watershed event of our life of faith.
The resurrection gives baptism its meaning, “alleluia” its joy, and
the Church its hope. For the full 50 days of the Easter Season, the
Church will rejoice and celebrate the wonders of these three days.

Holy Thursday. Mass and distribution of
Communion at 7 a.m. for those who cannot
participate in the evening services. Mass of
the Lord’s Supper at 7 pm (bilingual). This
sacred liturgy commemorates the
establishment of the sacrament of the
Eucharist and the Priesthood. We invite
parishioners, all the school children and their parents to participate
in the solemn liturgy. Rite of Reception of the Holy Oils, Washing
of the Feet of the twelve apostle representatives, and procession on
to the Repository will take place. It has been a tradition to visit area
Catholic churches during the evening to say a prayer at the
Repository. Keep this tradition on-going with your children as a
family. Our Basilica will be open until 10 p.m. for your private
prayers and reflection.
Good Friday. No morning Mass. __At 3 pm the Liturgy of the
Lord’s Passion will begin at Saint Joseph Basilica with adoration
of the relics of the Holy Cross and distribution of Communion.
___At 6:30 pm adoration services at the Holy Sepulcher in the
Basilica led by the Sacred Heart Society and the choir, followed by
the singing of Gorzkie Zale. At 7:30 pm, reflection/adoration will
take place in the Polish language.
Reminder: Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence, which means
only one full meatless meal and two light meals may be taken.
_Good Friday Collection for the Holy
Land. The offering given at the adoration of
the Cross is designated for the Holy Land
which sustains various ministries and assists
the Franciscan Friars in their works and to
preserve the Holy Land’s precious Christian
Community. The Good Friday Collection is
the primary means of support for this work.
Today keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land and serving the
people here is the urgent goal of the Church. It is a Pontifical
Collection, mandated by Pope Benedict XVI and his predecessors.
We know we can count on your assistance. Holy Land Christians,
all the clergy and religious working there deeply appreciate your
help
Holy Saturday. No Morning Mass. The Easter
Vigil will begin at 7:39 p.m. with the blessing of
new fire, paschal candle and water followed by
the Resurrection Liturgy. During this important
celebration the Basilica Choir will assist the
liturgy.
At the Easter Vigil we celebrate the Sacraments of
Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist) and the Rite
of Reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church.
Jennifer Aoude is celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation and
Cynthia Hunt and Shannon Quezada are celebrating the Rite of
Reception in the full communion of the Catholic Church. Thank
you to their sponsors who walked this journey of faith and
conversion with them throughout the year. Note: Holy Water will
be available at the conclusion of the services and on Easter Sunday.
_Easter Sunday. The Resurrection Celebration
(bilingual) will take place at 6 a.m. with a solemn
procession from the Holy Sepulcher followed by
the Mass. We kindly ask all parish organizations
to take part in the services on this most solemn day of the year. The
9:30 Mass is the special children’s Mass and
we invite all the parents to participate with their children.
Swieconka. Traditional blessing of food will
take place on Holy Saturday in the school
cafeteria every half-hour from 9 a.m. to 12
noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If anyone
wishes to have a priest bless the food at their
home, please call the rectory by Wednesday,
April 20.

PARTNERS IN CHARITY
Palm Sunday provides the proper atmosphere for the works of charity
and adhere to almsgiving, prayer and sacrifice. Today the second
collection will be devoted to Partners in Charity to help the poor,
neglected, forgotten and sick of our diocese. Among the many
institutions and countless individuals this collection is helping there are
about 65 retired priests in the Diocese of Worcester who greatly benefit
from this fund. I am grateful to those who have contributed, but we have
met less than half of our quota. If you have not as yet made your
contribution, we kindly ask that you try to do so this weekend. If you
already gave and can make an additional donation, God bless you! Work
of charity in the Diocese of Worcester is an obligation of the local
church.
