Słowa kluczowe: Katedra Stomatologii Zachowawczej i Dziecięcej, 60 lat, osiągnięcia. The Department of Conservative Dentistry was created in August 1948. It was located in four halls of Dental Clinics building at Cieszynski 17 Street. In January 1952 it was moved to rooms at Kuznicza 43/45 Street and, in July 2005 to build− ing at Krakowska 26 Street, where is located at present moment. The first head of the Department was deputy of professor, doctor Ignacy Pietrzycki (since 1958 extraordinary professor), who held this function 94 U. KACZMAREK for 14 years (1948–1962) [4, 6]. After his retire− ment, the head of the Chair had become associate professor doctor habilitated Stanislaw Potoczek (extraordinary professor from 1971 and ordinary professor from 1979) and held it for 30 years (1962–1993) to the time of his retirement. In 1993 the head of the Department of Conservative Dentistry has become associate Professor Urszula Kaczmarek followed by competitive procedure, who has fulfilled this function to present moment. Up to 1995 the name of this dental unit was the Department of Conservative Dentistry and realized on basis of laboratories (a pediatric den− tistry – manager associate Professor Urszula Kaczmarek doctor habilitated, periodontology – manager Marek Zietek doctor habilitated, propaedeutic dentistry – Professor Anna Majewska doctor habilitated) 4 subjects – conser− vative dentistry, pediatric dentistry, periodontol− ogy and oral mucosa diseases, and propaedeutic dentistry. In 1995 in frames of the Department, instead of Laboratory the Department of Periodontal Diseases and Oral Mucosa Diseases was set up under management by doctor habilitat− ed Marek Zietek. Two years later this Department was changed into separate dental unit – the Department of Periodontal Diseases and Oral Mucosa Diseases. With a view to realization of pre− and postgraduate education and as well as research in two dental fields – conservative den− tistry and paediatric dentistry, in 1999, former name of the unit was changed into the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Paedodontics. In 2002–2005, due to temporary implementa− tion of the subject “Propaedeutic dentistry” in frames of this Department the Department of Propaedeutic Dentistry was set up, which manag− er was Miroslawa Kasiak. Heads of the Department Conservative Dentistry and Professors Professor Ignacy Pietrzycki Professor Ignacy Pietrzycki (1895–1964) (Fig. 1) obtained PhD degree in 1910 at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. He had worked in department of dentistry at Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov directed by Professor Antoni Cieszynski (1932–1939). After the second world war in 1946 he began his work in Dental Clinics in Wroclaw and organized the Dental Department and later the Department of Conservative Dentistry, which was directed by him from 1947 to Fig. 1. In this period of time, (since 1987) periodical monitoring studies in Lower Silesia region, were begun ordered by Ministry of Health in cooperation with the WHO. It has also participated in national study of elderly population, which was a part of the first international study in geriatric dentistry coordi− nated by the WHO. In frames of own project of the study (authorship Urszula Kaczmarek), which was realized by 4 dental centers in the country frequen− cy, intensity and etiological factors of developmen− tal disorders of enamel mineralization were charac− terized. In cooperation with Agricultural University, the use of LIVEX preparation in children was esti− mated (Professor Anna Majewska). During this time, under Professor’s Potoczek supervision, PhD theses involving fairly broad topics were obtained by: Zofia Masztalerzowa – Activity of Alkaline and Acid Phosphatase in Periodontal Diseases (1967), Marian Siluk – Analysis of Current State of Teeth and Periodontal Condition as well as Needs 98 Resulting from Preventive Dental Examinations of Workers in Repair Plant of Railway Camp in Wroclaw (1969), Barbara Zasłonka – Sialic Acid in Saliva and Dental Caries (1969), Danuta Semczuk− Mazurkiewicz – State of Dental Caries at Children and Adolescents in Poland (1971), Barbara Brzezińska – Study on Development and Innervations of Tongue Gustatory Papillae of Man in Fetal Period (1973), Zofia Sozańska – Arginase Activity in Saliva and Dental Caries (1986), Halina Szczepańska – Selected Immunological Tests in Periodontal Diseases (1976), Wanda Kozaczyńska – Evaluation of State of Dentition at Schoolchildren in Kinshasa (1976), Alicja Kuszej – Study on Maintenance of FDP – Aldolases Activity in Periodontal Diseases (1976), Małgorzata Martosz – Proteolitic Activity of Saliva and Blood Serum after Some Dental Procedures (1977), Urszula Kaczmarek – Level of Fluor in Drinking Water and Maintenance of Some Salivary Components and Dental Caries (1977), Jadwiga Gogol – Activity of Lactate Dehydrogenase in Saliva and Periodontal Diseases (1978), Hanna Nowak−Malinowska – Influence of some Therapeutic Doses of Ionizing Radiation Applied in Cranio−Facial and Neck Regions on Dental and Periodontal Tissues Condition and Salivary Proprieties (1978), Bogumiła Granek – Analysis of Dentition State of School Adolescents Living in City of Lodz and Region on Basis of Epidemiological Studies from 1970 (1979), Edyta Kielan – Activity of Proteinase Thiol Inhibitors in Saliva and Periodontal Diseases (1993). Under direction of Professor Kaczmarek, Małgorzata Radwan−Oczko obtained PhD degree based on the thesis Activity of Alanine Aminopeptydase in Saliva in Some Oral Diseases (1992) [2–6]. One should not skip considerable contribution of workers of the Department in undergraduate education (realization of 4 subjects: conservative dentistry for students from 2nd to 5th years of study, periodontal diseases and oral mucosa diseases for 5th year, paediatric dentistry – for 5th year, propaedeutics of dentistry for 2nd year of studies) as well as in postgraduate and specializing education U. KACZMAREK for dentists from entire of Lower Silesia region. In the Department every year, a few undergraduates have been passing their postgraduate vocational practice, and a numerous dentists have been pass− ing the main and partial practical courses needed for specialization in range of general dentistry, con− servative dentistry, pediatric dentistry and peri− odontology. Also a great number of many central and regional courses for dentists in range of three dental’ specialties has been organized. One should to underline wide highly specialized dental treat− ment for children and adult patients from Lower Silesia region in range of cariology, endodontics, complex treatments of periodontal diseases (con− servative, surgical and prosthetic) as well as treat− ment of oral mucosa diseases. The Department of Conservative Dentistry in 1994–2000 This was period of many essential changes in the Department related both to the structure – sep− aration of independent Department of Periodontal Diseases and Oral Mucosa Diseases (manager Marek Ziętek) and employment of new academic teachers as a result of retirement of many experi− enced academic teachers: Sydonia Kuczyńska− Kozłowska Ph.D., Halina Krakowian Ph.D., Halina Pawilowska−Michalik D.M., Zofia Masztalerz Ph.D., Irena Szotowa Ph.D., Maria Rzadkowska− Kaźmierczak Ph.D., Barbara Zasłonka Ph.D., Barbara Brzezińska Ph.D., Halina Szczepańska Ph.D., Alicja Kuszej Ph.D. One should not skip just workers of the Department, who passed away prematurely for ever: Małgorzata Mączka Ph.D., Janina Jankowska Ph.D., Irena Szotowa Ph.D., Adolf Kozaczek Ph.D. and Zbigniew Kwolek Ph.D. Moreover, in this period of time apart from the change of name of the Department its research field was broadened, a number of teaching sub− jects increased and adaptation of theirs content to national standards of graduated education was per− formed. The active participation of many workers in numerous national and international congresses, cooperation with international scientific organiza− tions was established, such as European Organisation for Caries Research – ORCA, International Association of Dental Research, CED−IADR, International Academy of Pediatric Dentistry – IAPD. First to work in the Board of the Continental European Division of the IADR a den− tist from Poland – professor Urszula Kaczmarek was invited. Also for the first time the ORCA charged her organization in Wroclaw of workshop Postwar History of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Paedodontics Fig. 6. Moreover, during this period of time, in the Department, the Board of the national Section of Environmental Dentistry of the Polish 99 Dental Association was placed in frames of which 4 scientific meetings were organized (Fig. 7). She has participated also in works of organizing com− mittee of international congress CED/NOF−IADR in Warsaw (2000). It was invited to give lectures of 6 professors from foreign scientific centers. In this period of time 5 dentists under supervision of Professor Kaczmarek received PhD degrees: Beata Pregiel – Evaluation of Oral Diseases in Subjects after 55 Years (1994), Elżbieta Sołtan – Activity of Salivary Leucyl Aminopeptidase in some Oral Diseases (1997), Zbigniew Kozłowski – Oral Condition and Level of Chosen Salivary Components in Patients Suffered from Chronic Kidneys Insufficiecy (1997), Monika Gajewska – Oral Condition and Treatment Needs in 12−year− −old Children from Wroclaw Region (1999) and Alina Wrzyszcz−Kowalczyk – Morbidity on Oral Diseases at the Age of 35–44 Years in Lower Silesia Region (1999). The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Paedodontics in 2001–2006 In these years the workers of the Department have faced new organizational challenge (care about exchange of equipment, optimization of work in new housings’ conditions), didactic (adap− tation of curriculum to standard procedure in the European Union Countries, intensification of post− graduate education and specialization, validation of graduates skill) and scientific (projects for grant applications). At present, in the Department the following subjects are realized final exams from conservative dentistry with endodontics and pedi− atric dentistry, credits – preclinical conservative dentistry, preclinical endodontics, ergonomic den− tistry as well as optional subject – aesthetic den− tistry, and also teaching of students` in English language. The teaching knowledge in multi media form during interactive lectures and seminars has been continuously actualized, as well as also vali− dation and monitoring of educational process has been performed. In this period, PhD degrees under supervision of Professor Kaczmarek were obtained by: Joanna Woźniak – Sensitivity and Specificity of Chosen Diagnostic Methods of Early Carious Lesions (2004), Iwona Grzesiak – Multifactorial Analysis of Conditioning of Early Childhood Caries (2004), Monika Mysiak−Dębska – Level of Some Selected Salivary Components in Diabetic Children and Oral Health Condition (2005), Piotr Kosior 100 – Release of Fluoride from Chosen Dental Materials in Experimental and Clinical Conditions (2005), Joanna Kobierska−Brzoza – Oral Health Condition and Level of Salivary Components in Children with Bronchial Asthma (2005), Sylwia Kochan – Description of Mathematical Models of Measurements Results of Human Teeth Tissues Impedance (2005 Medical Faculty), Katarzyna Herman – Vegetarian Diet and Some Indices of Oral Health (2006), two PhD theses are in the course of referee, and in preparation further 4 theses are. Referees of most of these theses have found them outstanding and distinctive. In 2001–2005 180 papers were published and presented. Recently Iwona Hryncewicz, Ph.D., passed too early. Current research studies are performed in frame of statutory activities, 15 university grants and 1 grant of Commission for Research (Level of Selected Salivary Components in Reflux Disease with Dental Erosion). Topics of research involve such problems as: developmental disorder of den− tition in former population of Poland on basis of cranial material originated from mediaeval ceme− teries’ excavations from XII to XIV century; opti− mization of remineralization process of early cari− ous lesions (in vitro study); changes in oral condi− tion in patients with chronic kidneys insufficiency treated by peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis; study of chosen parameters of oral health in elder− ly people; oral condition in adults with type 1 and 2 diabetes as well as chosen salivary parameters; U. KACZMAREK oral condition and chosen salivary components in children with Down syndrome; evaluation of oral condition of 7−, 12− and 18−year−old subjects; own method evaluation of dynamic changes in bone thickness of chosen fragments of alveolar; use of digital radiography in evaluation of apical lesions; treatment optimization of early childhood caries; evaluation of usefulness magnet stimulation slow− ly changed magnetic field in treatment of children with cerebral palsy; level of selected salivary com− ponents in developmental age; erosive potential of selected drinks and their impact hard dental tissues by profilometry evaluation; shaping of young child attitude to dental treatment; oral health indices after cessation of drinking water fluorida− tion; ozone therapy in oral diseases. In the Department some clinical evaluation of dental materials and dental equipment ordered by dental companies have been also carried on. Moreover, research have been performed, basing on agree− ment with our Medical University, in cooperation with foreign research centre, IDMOS, Dundee, Great Britain and connected with the implementa− tion of new method diagnosing of early carious lesions. In frames of this last form of cooperation, some coworker papers were published and 5 den− tists have passed training in this dental centre as well. Seven dentists received the title of specialist in range of conservative dentistry with endodon− tics (3), paediatric dentistry (3) as well as general dentistry (1). Fig. 8.
