Stewardship Note: “. . . . For whoever exalts himself will
be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Thinking
your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else
and your money gives you status is another way of making
those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were
God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant
generosity and our hearts should be filled with gratitude.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 23, 2016
The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest
until it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High
responds.
Sirach 35:17‑18a
NO COMPARISONS
How many times have we read or
heard about someone who’s gotten into
trouble—maybe even fired from a
job—because of a brush with the law?
While our “Christian” minds tell us to
be sorry and even pray for the person, a
little voice inside our heads may also be
saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.”
And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are
there some things we do that are still not pleasing in
God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so
intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook
our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of,
we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else’s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness.
October Rosary Devotions - “Living Rosary” on
Monday at 5:30pm - No 7:00pm devotions.
Tues. - Fri. at 7:00pm and Sun. after 11:00am Mass.
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can
make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be
merciful to me a sinner”. Religious Israelites despised the
tax collector who prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile
occupiers and handling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s long-winded selfcongratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation,
was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer
to himself”, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector’s
simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our
own sinfulness, and “welcomes” other sinners as brothers
and sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize,
echoing Pope Francis’ famous comment about not being
the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home justified”, that is, restored to God’s friendship, for God’s
mercy is not prize achieved but gift received. “Let your
prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son, and dying
thief were all reconciled to God by a single phrase!” (Saint
John Climacus, 7th century).

Catholics Care—Catholics Vote - Pope Francis reminds us
“We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we
hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not
true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering
the best of themselves so that the leader can govern. The political realities of our nation presents us with opportunities and
challenges. Although our nation is founded on life, liberty.
These rights are not automatically guaranteed it requires our
involvement by voting our well formed conscience for the
individual who could make a difference in our life.

CEMETERY/HOLY GROUND
At this time of the year with falling leaves, shorter days and
cooler temperatures our thoughts turn to the meaning of life.
St. Joseph Garden of Peace is holy ground where our loved
ones await resurrection. Although they are out of sight, our
obligations to them lives on within us. Their names etched on
the monuments and columbarium niches are a reminder that
their memories linger in our hearts. They played an important
role in our lives and we are indebted to them.
Annual Cemetery Procession—please join us on Sunday,
October 30th at 2:00pm. For your convenience special votive candles are available in the sacristy to be placed on grave
sites. This is an expression of faith and a prayerful remembrance for relatives and friends.

DEVOTION AND NOVENA TO ST. JOSEPH
We ask our parishioners and friends to make a special effort
to join us on Wednesday, October 26th at 7:00pm for our
weekly Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph. In the Catholic
Church tradition we pray to our Patron for daily protection,
vocations, happy marriages, happy deaths and hopeless
causes. Many attribute their recovery to him and feel safe and
protected from danger as a result of their requests to St. Joseph.
You may note your special intentions to be read during the
devotions on paper in the Chapel. This week members of the
Holy Rosary Sodality will assist in bringing our Patron’s
statue into the sanctuary. Thank you for your donations.

KRONIKA PARAFIALNA
TRZYDZIESTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA
23 października 2016
„Modlitwa biednego przeniknie obłoki i nie ustanie, aż dojdzie do
celu. Nie odstąpi ona, aż wejrzy Najwyższy.”
„Kto się uniża, będzie wywyższony” –
mówi Jezus. To trudne słowa, bo niekiedy
łatwo przychodzi nam się uniżyć, lecz owo
uniżenie
wcale
nie
prowadzi
do
wywyższenia. Czasem można zakładać
przed Bogiem maskę nędzarza, ale trudno
pokazać Mu swoją prawdziwą twarz i być
pokornym. Uniżenie, do którego wzywa nas
Jezus, ma swoje źródło w dziecięctwie
Bożym. To postawa stanięcia w prawdzie,
która przywraca nam ludzką godność
i ostatecznie nas wywyższa. Najpierw trzeba zobaczyć swoją
wielkość daną przez Boga, a dopiero potem małość. Prawdy
o nas uczy nas Eucharystia. Ona nas przemienia i pokazuje, że
bez niej jesteśmy bezradni.
Page 5
współpracował z pogańskim okupantem i obracał walutą,
która miała wyryty wizerunek "boskiego" cesarza. Ale
samozadowolenie faryzeuszy w połączeniu z obłudnym
potępieniem, nie było ani trochę modlitwą. Faryzeusz mówił
tę modlitwę do siebie. Modlitwa celnika, prosta i szczera jest
wołaniem o miłosierdzie, a dla nas jest potwierdzeniem
naszej własnej grzeszności i pozwala zaakceptować innych
grzeszników jak braci i siostry, z którymi możemy się
identyfikować, a nawet współczuć. Celnik "odszedł do domu
usprawiedliwiony", czyli przywrócony do przyjaźni
z Bogiem, przez miłosierdzie Boże. Owo usprawiedliwienie
nie jest otrzymaną nagrodą, ale ofiarowanym darem.
