Drilling in Kazakhstan

17.08.2007
Petrolinvest has commenced test oil drills in the territory covered by the Zhubantam license. The
completion of drills will allow for updating geological documentation of the oil fields and more accurate
determination of oil reserves. The assembly of the equipment with drilling capacity of up to 750 metres
shown in the photographs lasted one week.
On August 4, the national flags of the countries whose citizens are engaged in the project –
namely those of Poland and Kazakhstan – were raised ceremoniously. According to the investment
plans, this will be the first of the nine drills scheduled for completion this year. Investment outlays of
EmbaYugNeft, a company half-owned by Petrolinvest, are expected to reach US$ 39.0 million in 2007.
The area covered by the exploration license is situated 250 kilometres east of the region’s capital,
Atyrau, a port city located at the mouth of the Ural into the Caspian Sea. It serves as the primary
loading/unloading site for the crude oil extracted from Emba oil fields. The nearest railway station of
Kulsary is 100 kilometres away.
- We are working with top professionals. We have succeeded in retaining the services of
Kazakhstan’s greatest driller. Yevgeniy Khan – a living legend of the drilling industry
– is our subcontractor, says Stefan Geroń, EmbaYugNeft General Director (see the photo).
Erection of another drilling equipment is scheduled for September. This time the equipment will be
supplied by Cracow-based Poszukiwania Nafty i Gazu [Oil and Gas Drilling Company]. It has already been
shipped to Kazakhstan and is awaiting transfer from the railway station. Once assembled, the new rig will
the largest oil drilling equipment of this sort in Kazahstan.
