Communiqué 1
One feature of contemporary Europe, which is more important that its cultural homogeneity,
is its increasing cultural diversity. As a result, the multitude of different cultures, in a specific
society, creates their own social orders, locating them on the continuum from conflict to
agreement. This is accompanied by processes protecting the leading culture, downplaying the
cultures of (ethnic, national, religious) minorities as well as the processes of mutual blending
and interpenetration of cultures. What should be seen as the most serious threat, however, are
those actions intended to protect one’s own cultural identity exclusively without acceptance of
other cultures. Such a state of affairs contributes to the antagonisation of cultures. In the
situation of intensively increasing migration, especially that of refugees, the phenomenon
becomes greater, and conflicts between different cultures arise increasingly frequently. In this
regard, it is difficult to find effective strategies of resolving conflicts arising from cultural
differences. In effect, consequences of different cultures colliding with / confronting each
other intensify in the everyday life of culturally diversified societies where the processes of
acculturation, socialisation and education take place, both among representatives of the
leading culture and among minority cultures. Therefore, there arise questions concerning the
scale of the antagonisation of cultures, the quality of these processes, especially what they
direct their participants to. Finding answers to these questions requires an interdisciplinary
reflection on the following issues.
- Ethnic, national and religious areas of tension in the European cultural discourse.
- Ethnic mentality as a source of conflicts.
- The policy(-ies) regarding national and ethnic minorities in contemporary Europe.
- Pluribus unum or unitas multiplex? Perspectives of the cultural landscape of Europe –
empirical indicators of social changes.
- (Re)defining the multicultural social order.
- Spaces where cultural antagonisms are overcome.
- Acculturation in the situation of a conflict of cultures.
- Socialisation and education along interfaces between cultures.
- Multiculturalism in the institutional space – between inclusion and exclusion.
We wish to discuss these issues at our scientific conference to which we are inviting
researchers of the problems of multiculturalism from various scientific disciplines. This is
because an interdisciplinary perspective on dimensions of the antagonisation of cultures will
contribute to redefining the processes of acculturation, socialisation and education in
culturally diversified societies located in the European space.
The Conference Fee is 600 PLN (or 140 €) deadline 25 September 2016.
