Customer Hazelwood, Review: Summary/Abstract: There is no doubt
that AIDS â “ describing as the plague of XXI century â “ is perceived
and regarded as one of the signs of our times. Images of AIDS that
appear in media are interesting examples of the cultural perception of
illness which is inextricably linked to a death. What is very characteristic,
is the fact that in many cases AIDS is presented as the process of dying.
In my thesis I analyzed social campaigns, TV mini-series Angels in
America (by Mike Nichols) and Derek Jarmanâ ™s documentary
project â “ Blue. These are three ways of speaking about death â “
difficult and forbidden subject during the era of beauty and youth. My
key questions are inter alia: Who is a person sick with AIDS or infected with HIV? What signs
indicate disease and approaching death? And last but not least: How the metaphors of disease
are intertwined with the metaphors of death? Lawrence T. ( ). . e Problem of Representation, and

Manchester. What happened to the plague of HIV/AIDS that once seemed so threatening?
Gabriele Griffin argues that the explosion of HIV/AIDS into highly visible cultural forms, from
movies, theatre, activist interventions, and art from the late-1980s to the mid-1990s has been.
Summary/Abstract: Blue (1993), the last film by Derek Jarman, had been released only four
months before the directorâ ™s death, caused by AIDSâ ‘related diseases. It is a very unique
kind of private confession. At the end of his life, Derek Jarman was getting blind and in some
moment the only that he could see was blue (a kind of blue nothing). His last movie reproduces
this experience and at the same time makes viewers to feel reality in the similar way, because the
only thing that we see is a blue screen. So, on the other hand, Blue is a very interesting project
from the theoretical point of view. It is not a typical documentary; it is not even a typical movie.
In my thesis I try to analyze Blue from few different perspectives: as an unique audiovisual
project, a manifest of artistic freedom and independence and as a deeply poignant confession of
a dying man. CEEOL is a leading provider of academic e-journals and e-books in the Humanities
