Jolanta Narkiewicz-Michałek Abstracts: “Magnetic fluids” Magnetic fluids or ferrofluids are colloidal suspensions of magnetized nanoparticles in a carrier solvent. The structure, dynamics and rheology of ferrofluids can be controlled by applied magnetic fields, and hence, these materials are “functional”. Current applications include as lubricants in magnetic devices, as liquid seals and valves, in biomedical imaging, in drug delivery, and in magnetic domain detection. In this talk the microscopic properties of ferrofluids will be examined from a theoretical and simulation perspective. In particular, some basic questions regarding phase behaviour, structure and dynamics will be tackled. “Single walled carbon nanotubes: growth mechanisms and fluorine plasma functionalization” I this talk, we will discuss strategies for determining the growth mechanism for single walled carbon nanotubes using novel Fe- and Co-based nanoparticle catalysts on MgO supports for chemical vapour deposition. We will show that NaCl can be used quantitatively as an inhibitor for growth. The use of dry (gas-phase) chemical plasmas for fluorination of single-walled tubes will be discussed, along with subsequent chemical routes towards controllable n-type and p-type doping of tubes, and measurements of their electrical properties.
