PERPETUAL NOVENA TO OUR LADY

The crowd wanted instant religion and Jesus said no. “You
are looking for me…because you have eaten your fill of the loaves.
You should not be working for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal…” The crowd in this Sunday’s Gospel saw a
miracle of multiplication of loaves and fish and figured that they could
have an instant God-experience (and probably more free bread and
fish in the future.)
They saw immediate results and wanted immediately to make
Jesus king. Jesus told them that they were searching for the wrong
thing. Instant religious gratification, the “perishable food” of the Gospel quotation does not last. “Instant religion” is no religion at all. It is
a fleeing “high”. It is, the language of the American frontier gold rush,
a “flash in the pan.” It is so easy for us humans to want “instant everything”, especially in a modern culture that suggests that technology
can produce it. Supermarkets have shelves full of packages screaming,
“Instant ice tea, Quik Quaker Oats, instant coffee, one minute muffins.”
Drive in restaurants assures us that our orders will be ready
in the time it takes to drive from the order-in microphone to the serving window. Banks boast that all our bills for months can be paid in
on-three minute phone call or by internet. A complete six room prefab house plumbing and all, can be erected in 48 hours.
If a Concorde jet can take us from New York to London in less
then three hours now, why shouldn’t a Vanguard rocket be able to
shoot us over in 25 minutes in five years from now. The “food that
remains unto eternal life”, the very presence of Jesus Himself, does not
suddenly turn us into perfect saints, into deliriously joyful religionists
who are never depressed. Rather, Jesus comes to us constantly to
invite us to partake of the experience of true religion: effort-filled
prayer, the tedious struggle to serve humanity, the disciplined commitment to gospel values.
I hope that our Christian brothers and sisters in the “bornagain “movement are not offended by this suggestion, but I do hope
that they are challenged by it. A clearly defined singular, and instant
experience of God is not what Jesus proclaims in the Gospel. A lifelong pursuit of God and a life-long pursuit of us by God, with occasional high points of spiritual intercourse, is the diet that takes us to
eternal life.

Jedną z form celebracji trwającego Roku Kapłańskiego w
Kościele Katolickim, ogłoszonego przez papieŜa Benedykta XVI, w
Archidiecezji Filadelfijskiej, jest nawiedzenie relikwii Jan Vianney.
Do tej diecezji naleŜy Narodowe Sanktuarium Matki
BoŜej Częstochowskiej, przez cały rok relikwie będą nawiedzać
parafie, klasztory, szkoły i instytuty religijne. Podczas trwania
peregrynacji relikwii towarzyszy modlitwa w intencji kapłanów i
seminarzystów przygotowujących się do przyjęcia Święceń
Kapłańskich.
Jan Vianney urodził się w Dardilly kolo Lyonu
(Francja) w roku 1786.
Pokonał wiele trudności, zanim otrzymał Świecenia
Kapłańskie. Wkrótce został proboszczem w Ars, zobojętniała
parafie odrodził przez swoją miłość do mieszkańców wioski,
modlitwę i pokutą. Wyczerpany pracą i umartwieniami zmarł w
Ars 4 sierpnia 1859r. W tym roku obchodzimy 150 rocznicę
śmierci świętego. Święty z Ars głosił swoim Ŝyciem prawdę
zawarta w dzisiejszych czytaniach liturgicznych. Jan Maria wziął
na serio słowa Jezusa „ Jam jest chleb Ŝycia”.
Wyeksponowane relikwie i ikona św. Jana Marii Vianeya
w Duchowej Stolicy Polonii, stały się szansą do gorliwszej
modlitwy za wstawiennictwem proboszcza z Ars. Relikwie, z łac.
"resztki, szczątki", to doczesne szczątki świętych lub rzeczy z nimi
związane. Cześć oddawana szczątkom wielkich przyjaciół BoŜych
ma swoje źródła juŜ w Piśmie Świętym. Szczątki BoŜych
współpracowników towarzyszyły i ochraniały w trudnościach.
Do Sanktuarium wraz z relikwiami przybyła ikona
przedstawiającego proboszcza z Ars. Pielgrzymi przybywający do
sanktuarium, mają moŜliwość m. in. ucałowania i adoracji relikwii,
oraz
zapoznania
się
historią
świętego.
Bezpośrednio
zaangaŜowani dostarczeniem relikwii do wyznaczonych miejsc,
zajmują się męŜczyźni z organizacji Knights of Columbus.
Przez obecność i wstawiennictwo, patrona kapłanów
pielgrzymi, którzy w tym tygodni pielgrzymują do sanktuarium są
zaproszeni by doświadczać wstawiennictwa świętego proboszcza i
swoja modlitwą wspomagać duchowieństwo posługujące na
terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych.
