Dr Maria Vargas-Vera przebywa•a od wrze•nia do listopada 2007 roku w Katedrze Informatyki Ekonomicznej w ramach projektu
europejskiego ENIRAF – Enhanced Information Retrieval and Filtering for Analytical Systems (Udoskonalone wyszukiwanie i
filtrowanie informacji do systemów analitycznych).
Dr Vargas-Vera otrzyma•a tytu• doktora w 1995 roku na Uniwersytecie w Edynburgu (Szkocja) w Instytucie Sztucznej Inteligencji.
Po doktoracie pracowa•a przez dwa lata w Bristol University. Nast•pnie przez 6 lat pracowa•a przy presti•owym projekcie AKT
(Advanced Knowledge Technologies) w Open University (Wielka Brytania). Obecnie dr Vargas-Vera jest zatrudniona w
charakterze wyk•adowcy w Intercollege Larnaca na Cyprze i nadal jest zwi•zana Open University.
Obszar badawczy dr Vargas-Very to wykorzystanie ontologii w przetwarzaniu j•zyka naturalnego (NLP). Szczególne
zainteresowania to ekstrakcja informacji wykorzystuj•ca ontologie, systemy automatycznego odpowiadania na pytania,
wyszukiwanie informacji, automatyczna ocena esejów studenckich, pó•automatyczna konstrukcja ontologii z tekstu i odwzorowania
ontologii wykorzystuj•ce agenty. Jest g•ównym twórc• MnM – systemu to pó•automatycznego wype•niania ontologii instancjami z
tekstu oraz AQUA – systemu automatycznego odpowiadania na pytania przez Internet.

Title:
“Ontology Population from Text & Ontology driven Question Answering”
Abstract:
Ontologies can play a very important role in information systems. They can support various information system processes,
particularly information acquisition and integration. Ontologies themselves need to be designed, built and maintained. An important
part of the ontology engineering cycle is the ability to keep a handcrafted ontology up to date.
This talk will first outline my work on the arena of information extraction. In particular, I will introduce a system called MnM that
helps during the ontology maintenance process. MnM extracts information from texts and populates an ontology. It uses NLP
(Natural Language Processing) and Machine Learning technologies. MnM was tested using an electronic newsletter consisting of
news articles describing events happening in an academic institute the Knowledge Media Institute (KMI). Then as a second part the
talk will focus on AQUA an ontology driven Question Answering system and ontology mapping problem that we encounter when
trying to satisfy a query using heterogonous resources.
Dr Maria Vargas-Vera biographical notes:
Dr Maria Vargas-Vera obtained her PhD from the Artificial Intelligence Department at Edinburgh University. After her PhD she
worked two years as Research Associated at Bristol University UK. Then, she worked 6 years on the high-profile AKT project
(Advanced Knowledge Technologies) at The Open University, England, UK. Currently Dr Vargas-Vera is faculty at Intercollege,
Cyprus and still associated to the Open University.
Dr Vargas-Vera research focuses on the use of Ontologies in Natural Language Processing. In particular, her research is on
Ontology-Based Information Extraction, Question Answering, Information Retrieval Automated Assessment of Student Essays,
Semi-Automatic Construction of Ontologies from text and Ontology mapping using Agents. She is the main author of MnM – a
system for Semi-Automatic Population of Ontologies from Text (widely used in the Semantic Web community) and AQUA, a
Question Answering System over the Web.
