Progress report for the period between
1 November 2014 and 30 April 2015*.
1. Organisation of work
The research project “Cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries on the territory of former Poland
and in Silesia in 18th and 19th centuries: fate, significance, cataloguing” is financed within the
framework of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s “National Programme for the
Development of Humanities” for 2012–2016 and carried out under the aegis of the Polish
Historical Society. Its leader is Prof dr hab. Marek Derwich from the Institute of History, University
of Wrocław. At the moment 167 people and 27 institutions are involved in the Project to a lesser
or greater extent. They are supported by the Project Office team: Weronika Wojciech (secretary),
Mgr Katarzyna Romanow (Project assistant), Mgr Paula Zawisza (Project assistant), Mgr Piotr
Piętkowski (database coordinator).
The Project has its own website, http://www.kasaty.pl, featuring more detailed information about
it, including information about rules of collaborating with the Project and financing research
(Project and Contact tabs), current events and research (Home tab) as well as conferences
(Conferences tab) and publications (Publications tab). The Project website also provides direct
links to the Knowledge Portal and the Hereditas Monasteriorum journal.
Successive issues of Hereditas Monasteriorum contain a section entitled Project Chronicle – see HM,
1, 2012, pp. 355-471; HM, 2, 2013, pp. 443-568; HM, 3, 2013, pp. 421-595; HM 4, 2014, pp. 455530; HM, 5, 2014, pp. 431-514 (available online on www.hm.kasaty.pl). It contains Project
progress reports for successive six-month periods, reports on conferences organised under the
Project, reports on the work carried out by the research teams as well as reports on the most
important individual studies (all are also listed in the semi-annual reports).
The semi-annual reports are also available online on the Project website, under the Project tab
(http://www.kasaty.pl/category/sprawozdania/). So far, five reports have been published for the
following periods: 6 March–30 November 2012 (HM, 1, 2012, pp. 369-377), 1 December 2012–30
April 2013 (HM, 2, 2013, pp. 445-453); 1 May–31 October 2013 (HM, 3, 2013, pp. 423-431); 1
November 2013–31 May 2014 (HM, 4, 2014, pp. 457-472) and 1 June–30 October 2014 (HM, 5,
2014, pp. 433-443).

2. Knowledge Portal
The IT team, made up of Mgr Patryk Dawidziuk (coordinator), Mgr Szymon Sztajer, Mgr Rafał
Toboła and Mgr Marek Wójcikowski, is continuing its work on the Knowledge Portal, i.e. databases
and related tools, in close collaboration with the Project Office. The Portal is now available on
http://pw.kasaty.pl/.
Records are added to the databases online and offline (by means of automatically exported Excel
forms).
As of 30 April 2015 there are 50,607 completed records (an increase of 2069):
- architecture database: 956 (an increase of 364);
- database of archival materials, documents and manuscripts from former monasteries: 14,927 (an
increase of 100);
- database of official archival materials: 1,620 (an increase of 166);
- bibliography database: 2,087 (an increase of 315);
- printed books database: 20,433 (an increase of 100);
- monasteries database: 1,834 (an increase of 30);
- movables database: 4,667 (an increase of 645);
- music items database: 1,910 (an increase of 47);
- database of gardens and parks: 45 (an increase of 11);
- database of the last monastics: 1,231 (an increase of 186);
- database of architectural drawings and iconography: 663 (an increase of 83);
- database of religious orders and congregations: 234 (an increase of 22);
37,589 records have been entered or imported into the databases and are available online:
- architecture database: 917 (an increase of 403);
- database of archival materials, documents and manuscripts from former monasteries: 13,850 (an
increase of 1,627);
- database of official archival materials: 1,077 (an increase of 586);
- bibliography database: 2,000 (an increase of 954);
- printed books database: 10,664 (an increase of 2,757);
- monasteries database: 1,663 (an increase of 98);
- movables database: 4,637 (an increase of 2,932);
- music items database: 1,618 (an increase of 126);
- database of gardens and parks: 41 (an increase of 23);
- database of the last monastics: 355 (an increase of 184);
- database of architectural drawings and iconography: 641 (an increase of 135);
- database of religious orders and congregations: 126 (an increase of 16);
The test version (available at pw.kasaty.pl) also contains an interactive map of dissolved
monasteries. It features all monastic houses for which geographical coordinates have been
established.
3. Research
Research under the Project is conducted by individual collaborators and by research teams.
3.1. Research teams
Team I. The team has disbanded. Its members, Dr Witalij Rosowski and Dr Irena Wodzianowska,
are willing to continue their collaboration with the Project as part of their individual research.
Team II. Composition: eight scholars (no change). Coordinator: Prof Piotr Oliński (Nicolaus
Copernicus University). Objective: to make an inventory of the legacy of monasteries dissolved in
West Prussia. A report for the period between 1 November 2014 and 31 October 2015 will be
published in HM, 7, 2015.
Team III. Composition: four scholars (no change). Coordinator: Rev Prof Janusz Królikowski (John
Paul II University). Objective: inventory and study of the cultural heritage of monasteries dissolved
in the Diocese of Tarnów. A report for the period between 1 November 2014 and 31 October 2015
will be published in HM, 7, 2015.
Team IV. The team has been disbanded, its objectives have been achieved to a very limited extent.
Team V. Composition: one scholar (Dr Barbara Markowska has resigned as team member).
Research is being continued by Dr Marcin Jewdokimow (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University).
Objective: study the material and symbolic significance of selected dissolved monasteries to their
local communities and preparation of articles devoted to the topic. A report for the period
between 1 November 2014 and 31 October 2015 will be published in HM, 7, 2015.
Team VI. Composition: four scholars (no change in terms of numbers; Mgr Inga Stembrowicz has
resigned as team member, Mgr Konrad Morawski has joined the team). Coordinator: Mgr
Małgorzata Kośka (Central Archives of Historical Records). Objective: inventory and study of
records relating to former monasteries and dissolutions, and kept in the Central Archives of
Historical Records, Warsaw. Report, see HM 6, 2015, p. 493.
Team VII. The team has been disbanded without achieving its objectives.
Team VIII. Composition: four scholars (no change). Coordinator: Mgr Elżbieta Bylinowa. The team
has suspended its activities until the end of 2015.
Team IX. The team has disbanded owing to the fact that its members have different tasks to
perform. Work on an inventory of the holdings of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Kórnik Library is
carried out by the Project Office.
Team X. Composition: two scholars (Mgr Anna Jezierska has resigned as team member).
Coordinator: Mgr Urszula Bończuk-Dawidziuk (University of Wrocław Museum). Objective: edition
of Acta manualia die Uebernahme der Bibliotheken, Kunstsammlungen & Archive in den aufgehobenen
Klöstern Schlesiens betreffend. Busching. Report, see HM 6, 2015, p. 494.
Team XI. Composition: three scholars (no change). Coordinator: Dr Alina Mądry (Adam Mickiewicz
University, National Museum in Poznań). Objective: inventory of musical items and musical
instruments. Report, see HM 5, 2014, pp. 495-498.
Team XII. Composition: five scholars (no change). Coordinator: Mgr Ewa Hauptman-Fischer
(Warsaw University Library). Objective: inventory of musical items from former monasteries kept
in the Warsaw University Library. Report, see HM 6, 2015, pp. 499-511.
Team XIII. Composition: four scholars (no change). Coordinator: Dr hab. Andrzej Kozieł (University
of Wrocław). Objective: to compile a complete catalogue of all surviving works of art which were
to be found in the Lubiąż Abbey before 1810. Report, see HM 6, 2015, pp. 512-513.
Team XIV. Composition: two scholars (no change). The team has suspended its activities until June
2016.
Team XV. Composition: two scholars (no change). The team has achieved its objective, i.e. has
compiled an inventory of printed books from dissolved monasteries kept in the Cieszyn Library,
and has finished its work.
Team XVI. Composition: three scholars (Mgr Krzysztof Kaleta and Mgr Paulina Kraska have
resigned as team members). Coordinator: Mgr Łukasz Guldon. Objective: inventory and study of
archival materials relating to former monasteries and dissolutions, and kept in the State Archives
in Kielce. Report, see HM 6, 2015, p. 514.
Team XVII. Composition: two scholars (no change). Objective: inventory of archival materials
illustrating the fate of the cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries and kept in the State Archives
in Radom. Report, see HM 6, 2015, pp. 515-516.
Team XVIII. Composition: two scholars (no change). Objective: to compile and prepare for
publication an inventory of manuscripts from dissolved monasteries kept in the Wrocław
University Library. Report, see HM 6, 2015, p. 517.
Team XIX. Composition: three scholars (Dr Robert Heś and Dr Beata Marcisz-Czapla have resigned
as team members). Coordinator: Dr Marek L. Wójcik (University of Wrocław). Objective: edition of
19th-century repositories of documents from monasteries dissolved in Silesia kept in the State
Archives in Wrocław Report, see HM 6, 2015, pp. 518-519.
Team XX. Composition: two scholars (no change). Objective: inventory of the holdings of the State
Archives in Opole relating to archival materials of interest to the Project. Report, see HM 6, 2015,
p. 520-553.
3.2. Preliminary research and miscellaneous studies
Work has been carried out to find and systematise source information about the dissolved
monasteries, and to enter the data into the Knowledge Portal.
Mgr Piotr Piętkowski with the team (Mgr Anna Brodziak, Mgr Maciej Badowicz, Mgr Dominik
Kwieciak, Mgr Kacper Manikowski, Konrad Szymański, Mgr Jacek Wójcik and Mgr Patrycja Ziomek)
and member of the Project Office have been working on adding the data to the Project databases.
Mgr Piotr Piętkowski has successfully negotiated collaboration with the Project concerning the
publication of its data in the Library and Archives of the Monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers of
St. John of God in Cracow, Franciscan Archives in Cracow and Reformati Franciscan Archives in
Cracow. He has also conducted talks and research at the Kórnik Library of the Polish Academy of
Sciences, Library of the Adam Mickiewicz University and the State Archives and the Archdiocesan
Archives in Poznań. Together with a four-scholar team (Mgr Maciej Badowicz, Mgr Anna Brodziak,
Mgr Kacper Manikowski, Mgr Jacek Wójcik) he has conducted research at the Archives of the
Monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God in Cracow (former Trinitarian archival
materials) and at the Wawel branch of the National Archives in Cracow. A report on the work of
the team coordinated by Mgr Piotr Piętkowski will be published in HM, 7, 2015.
Individual studies have also been conducted as part of the Project:
Dr Andrzej Buczyło (Biała Podlaska) is conducting preliminary research at the Diocesan Archives in
Siedlce, preparing an inventory of its archival holdings of interest to the Project.
Dr Janina Dzik (SIMA-ART, Cracow) is continuing her preliminary research in archives and libraries
as well as field research in Małopolska, looking for works of art and printed books from dissolved
monasteries. She has also begun preliminary research in connection with a catalogue she is
working on of 18th-century paintings in monastic churches in the former Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. Between 16 and 18 December 2014 she carried out preliminary research in
Warsaw, surveying the holdings of the recording library of the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of
Sciences, Archives of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University as well as Churches of St. Anna and
St. Anthony (Czerniaków district).
Dr Waldemar Firlej and Dr Danuta Krześniak-Firlej (Jan Kochanowski University of Kielce), who
were to prepare a study of the fate of monastics from dissolved monasteries, who took up writing
and teaching in the Dioceses of Kielce and Sandomierz in the 19th and early 20th century, in the
end have come up with a study entitled Bibliografia piśmiennictwa zakonników z obszaru diecezji
kieleckiej i sandomierskiej w drugiej połowie XVIII i XIX wieku [Bibliography of the Writings of Monastics from
the Dioceses of Kielce and Sandomierz in the Second Half of the 18th and in the 19th Century], which has
been reviewed and accepted for publication in one of the future issues of HM.
Dr Cezary Jastrzębski (Jan Kochanowski University of Kielce) is continuing his work on the book
Skasowane klasztory między Wisłą a Pilicą we wspomnieniach i relacjach prasowych. Antologia
[Dissolved Monasteries Between Rivers Vistula and Pilica in Memoirs and Press Accounts. An
Anthology], vol. 1: 1795–1863.
Mgr Grzegorz Joachimiak (University of Wrocław), who has completed his work on the adaptation
of RISM records from the Cistercian Abbey in Krzeszów to the requirements of the musical items
database in the Knowledge Portal (120 records in total), is continuing his work on the cataloguing
of musical items in the abbey, currently kept in the Library of the Abbey of the Benedictine Sisters
in Krzeszów – he has added a group of 121 manuscripts (there are now 221 manuscripts in total).
A report for the period between 1 November 2014 and 31 October 2015 will be published in HM,
7, 2015.
Dr Magdalena Marosz (National Archives, Cracow) has completed her work on an inventory of
archival materials from dissolved monasteries of the Augustinian Hermits kept in the Archdiocesan
Archives in Warsaw, Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw, Archives of the Carmelite
Monastery in Cracow, National Archives in Cracow, State Archives in Bydgoszcz, Library of the
Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Manuscript Section of
the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow, Manuscript Department of the Warsaw University Library and
Manuscript Department of the Library of the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław. She has
begun working on an inventory of records from dissolved monasteries kept in the Archives of the
Cracow Province of the Discalced Carmelites and in the Archives of the Abbey of the Benedictine
Nuns in Staniątki. The results of this research will be published in 2016 in the form of books.
Mgr Dorota Matyaszczyk is studying the fate of the cultural heritage of monasteries dissolved in
Wielkopolska. Report, see HM 6, 2015, pp. 554-555.
Mgr Ewa Mikołajczak (Municipal Building Archives in Wrocław) has completed her work on an
inventory of architectural documentation of the former monastery buildings on the Sand Island in
Wrocław, now kept in the Municipal Building Archives, Museum of Architecture, Wrocław. At the
moment she is finishing her work on a monograph devoted to the topic.
Dr hab. Dr hab. Jerzy Pająk and Prof dr hab. Jerzy Szczepański (Jan Kochanowski University, Kielce)
are continuing their work on a catalogue of maps, plans and architectural drawings from dissolved
monasteries kept in the State Archives in Radom. The publication is planned for 2016.
Mgr Krzysztof Pawlik (Wrocław) has had to suspend his work on an edition of Katalogen des hisiegen
Gymnasiums so wie der Stifts- und Klosterbibliotheken in Neisse 1812 from the collection of the State
Archives in Opole for family reasons.
Dr Gregor Ploch (Archdiocese of Vienna) is continuing his work on an inventory of archive
documents concerning Josephinist dissolutions in Galicia in the Stiftungshofbuchhaltung fonds of
the Austrian State Archives in Vienna. The results of this research will be published in 2016 in the
form of a book.
Dr Andreas Reinke (Berlin) is continuing his preliminary research at the Prussian Privy State
Archives in Dahlem-Berlin with a view to selecting and compiling an inventory of official
documents relating to monasteries dissolved in Silesia. The results of this research will be
published in 2016 in the form of a book.
Mgr Karol Seidel (Głogów) has conducted preliminary research in the State Archives in Poznań and
the Archdiocesan Archives in Poznań in order to create digital copies of archival records associated
with the dissolved Cistercian Monastery in Przęmęt.
Dr Szymon Sułecki (Archives of the Carmelite Monastery in Piasek, Cracow) has begun working on
an inventory of records of dissolved monasteries kept in the Archives of the Carmelite Monastery
in Piasek, Cracow. The results of this research will be published in 2016 in the form of a book.
Prof Tadeusz M. Trajdos (Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences) has finished his work on
an edition of the last extant inventories of the Benedictine Monastery of Stare Troki from 1797
and 1799. The book will be published in 2016.
Prof Magdalena Ujma (University of Opole) is finishing her work on the publication of plans of
dissolved monasteries kept in the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv. The book will
be published in 2016.
3.3. Acquisition of source and iconographic material
The following source and iconographic materials were digitised or purchased in the analysed
reporting period:
Photographs (181) of architectural details from the former Cistercian Abbey in Lubiąż taken by
Magdalena Pulik as part of the work of Team XIII.
Capitulum electivum provinciae Lithvanae, S. Angeli Custodis, ordinis Praedicatorum, Vilnae, Typis
Neumanii et Dworzecii, anno 1833, digitisation of records kept in the University of Wrocław
Library on the Sand Island.

6.1. Lecture cycle
The Wrocław Friends of History Society, branch of the Polish Historical Society, and the City
Museum of Wrocław have prepared a cycle of lectures, delivered under the “Saturdays at the
Town Hall” series, entitled: The Birth of Modern Wrocław: the Significance of the 1810
Secularisation Edict.
The lectures are held at the Museum of Bourgeois Art, Old Town Hall, Rynek, Sala Wielka, at 12.00.
