PROFESOR SIR JIM McDONALD
Sir Jim McDonald urodził się
28 kwietnia 1957 r. Studia pierwszego stopnia ukończył w 1978 r. na
University of Strathclyde. Dyplom
magistra otrzymał w 1984 r., a pracę
doktorską obronił w 1990 r. Jest
specjalistą w zakresie elektrotechniki i elektroenergetyki.
Na University of Strathclyde
profesor przeszedł kolejne szczeble kariery naukowej, uzyskując
w 1993r. stanowisko profesora
w dziedzinie systemów elektroenergetycznych. W 2001 r. został dyrektorem Instytutu
Energii i Środowiska, największej grupy badawczej na arenie międzynarodowej zajmującej się techniką energetyki
i systemami elektroenergetycznymi. W latach 2003-2006
kierował Instytutem Elektroniki i Elektrotechniki University
of Strathclyde. W 2006 r. został mianowany na stanowisko
Deputy Principal. Zajmował się rozwojem i komercjalizacją
wyników badań. Od 2009 r. pełni funkcje Principal and
vice-Chancellor University of Strathclyde.
Profesor McDonald jest ekspertem o międzynarodowym
autorytecie, współautorem trzech książek oraz ponad 600
artykułów i referatów opublikowanych w czasopismach
specjalistycznych a także wydawnictwach konferencyjnych.
Jest promotorem ponad 50 prac doktorskich.
Profesor McDonald prowadzi bardzo aktywną działalność doradczą na rzecz rządu Wielkiej Brytanii, piastując
przy tym wiele funkcji publicznych. W 2009 r. został powołany na stanowisko prezesa Scottish Energy Technology
Partnership. Jest ono częścią głównego konsorcjum badań
naukowych w Szkocji, stworzonego przez Scottish Funding
Council oraz instytucje szkolnictwa wyższego. Profesor
jest członkiem m.in.: Scottish Enterprise Board, Scottish
Science Advisory Committee, UK Trade and Investment
Energy Excellence Board, Scottish Enterprise Aerospace,
Marine and Defence Industrial Advisory Board, a także
współprzewodniczącym Energy Advisory Board w Szkocji.
W 2012 r. otrzymał tytuł szlachecki nadany za zasługi
dla edukacji, techniki i gospodarki przez Królową Elżbietę
II przy okazji Diamentowego Jubileuszu Jej Urodzin.
Profesor Jim McDonald jest członkiem Royal Academy
of Engineering oraz Royal Society of Edinburgh.
PROFESSOR SIR JIM McDONALD
Sir Jim McDonald was born
on 28 April 1957. He got his undergraduate degree in 1978 from
the University of Strathclyde. In
1984, he was awarded a MSc,
and in 1990, a PhD. His primary
area of expertise is power systems
engineering.
The professor joined the University of Strathclyde research
community and in 1993, was
appointed as the Rolls-Royce
Professor of Electrical Power
Systems. In 2001, he was nominated the Chairman of the
Institute for Energy and Environment, the largest international
power engineering systems research group. He headed the
Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the
University of Strathclyde from 2003 until 2006 when he was
appointed Deputy Principal. He focused on the University’s
development and commercialization of research results.
Finally, in 2009 came the appointment to the post of viceChancellor of the University of Strathclyde.
The professor is an internationally acclaimed expert,
a co-author of three books and over 600 research papers and
articles published in journals and conference proceedings.
He has supervised more than 50 doctoral theses.
He is actively involved in advising British government and holds many public functions. In 2009, he was
nominated Chairman of the Scottish Energy Technology
Partnership, which is a major energy research consortium
involving Scottish Funding Council and higher education
institutions. The professor is a member of the Scottish Enterprise Board, Scottish Science Advisory Committee, UK Trade
and Investment Energy Excellence Board, Scottish Enterprise
Aerospace, Marine and Defence Industrial Advisory Board,
and co-Chair of the Energy Advisory Board in Scotland.
In the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List in 2012,
professor McDonald was awarded a Knighthood for services
for education, energy and the economy.
Professor sir Jim McDonald is a Fellow of the Royal
Academy of Engineering and Royal Society of Edinburgh.
