As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish
Sunday, February 21/22, 2004:
Envelopes:
$ 9,028.50
Loose Cash:
$ 3,956.00
TOTAL DONATIONS:
$12,984.50
Amount over / (under) weekly budget: ($2,015.50)
Our regular collection improved last week by more than $1,000. Thank you for all that you do for St. Ferdinand
Parish!
The season of Lent is here which means it is time for the Annual Catholic Appeal to support the ministries and
services of the Archdiocese as well as offering Lenten Alms for the poor and needy.
The Catholic Appeal second collection will be next weekend. You may donate by cash or check. Contributions
or pledges by check are sent directly to the Archdiocese (or you may mail them directly yourself), cash contributions are
consolidated to one parish check. After the appeal weekend all pledge payments should be made directly to the
Archdiocese of Chicago. Similarly, the Appeal office should supply you with acknowledgments of your gift(s) for tax
purposes. St. Ferdinand’s receives the credit for all contributions made through the parish or by mail; the recording of
contributions is maintained downtown, not here at the parish. Thank you for supporting the local Church of Chicago.
Lenten Alms envelopes are available in the Church and Chapel for the next six weeks. Please use these special
purple and black envelopes for your contributions on Palm Sunday or anytime you wish through the regular offertory
collection. Each week in the bulletin we will feature one of the three areas of charitable works that we will support this
year as a parish community.

First Sunday of Lent
Port Ministries
Why me?
My home is the Street. Not an actual place, like Halsted Street, or
State Street or any other Street with a name. My Street isn’t a concrete strip in Chicago, it’s another world right next to yours.
People speak of the poor, they talk about the homeless, like they were
some great faceless mass out there. Take it from me, we all have
names, faces, stories. I am one of them and they are part of me.
I am a man, a woman, I am young and I am old, but most tragically of
all I am a child. Whatever or whoever I am, the Street doesn’t care.
The Street is the great equalizer.
I am African-American, I am Hispanic, I belonged to white, prosperous
families of the middle class. I am a believing Catholic, Protestant, Jew,
Hindu, Muslim or I believe in nothing at all. The Street does that to
you.
Faith tells us that we were created as beautiful, free people in the
image of God. If that’s true, why do I sleep in doorways and under
bridges? Why do I have to beg and sometimes find my food in
garbage cans on LaSalle Street?
Why is this here?
Port Ministries is, I guess you can say, more than a soup kitchen or a
shelter. It is an idea, It is a vision that really came about because one
man wanted to help a lot of people and didn’t give up.
Father Gus Milon, OFM, a Franciscan friar, came to the south side of
Chicago in 1985 with nothing more than a few friends, a few dollars
and a dream to feed the poor, clothe the naked, shelter the orphans
and be a friend to those that life has just passed by.
It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen fast. Father Gus took on the Street
and, for the first time, the Street backed off. He won because he
fought it with hope and prayer.
First there was the soup kitchen, an old abandoned restaurant at 5058
South Ashland Avenue. Tough turf. Gang turf.
But they came.
First day The Port opened its doors Father Gus didn’t know where the
food or the money would come from. By that afternoon, food had
somehow arrived to feed everybody. It took a lot of work, a lot of
sweat, but there was food for all.
It is a place of hope....
People respond when something is real. Port Ministries is real because every day they don’t just post their Mission Statement. They
live it.
At Port Ministries they don’t preach, they don’t convert, they don’t try
to ‘save’ you from the Street. They fill the basic needs of human
beings. I’m given food, clothes, a shower and a bed for the night.
There’s a free clinic if I’m hurting, with licensed doctors who give
examinations and make referrals.
If I have a family, we can stay together under one roof in safety and
comfort. If I want, I can get counseling for everything from financial
management to education to job placement.
At Port Ministries, I am offered everything I need to survive and slowly
work my way to a point of stability and self-sufficiency. I don’t give up
my free will or choice, though. I receive with dignity.
Faith is all around you at Port Ministries, the Spirit is alive everywhere, in the face of every volunteer and guest who enters the door.
It’s not preached at you in words, it’s shown by the actions of the heart.
Please be generous this Lent,
that by our sacrifice the Port Ministries may benefit.

Congratulations to our Second Graders.

bless all of you, your parents and teachers.
March, 2004
Dear Friends in Christ,
In my role as Archbishop, I am privileged to see the vast
array of good works done in the Catholic name throughout
Cook and Lake Counties. Hundreds of dedicated professionals
and thousands of well-prepared volunteers make visible
Christ’s love for His people in this portion of our Lord’s kingdom. There are many great stories that have not been told.
More than 125,000 children are taught the faith and prepared to receive the sacraments by catechists who are trained
through the Office for Catechesis. In parishes throughout the
Archdiocese, lay volunteers are preparing to call our lapsed
brothers and sisters back to the practice of our Catholic faith
through “Spreading the Holy Fire,” an outreach effort being
coordinated by our Office for Evangelization.
Parishes and schools serving economically distressed
neighborhoods receive support to maintain buildings and help
with operating expenses. We reach out to attract, form and sustain deacons and lay ministers to enrich our parish worship and
to help develop and guide parishbased ministries. Our priests
participate in on-going formation and continuing education
programs in order to remain vitally engaged in their ministry.
Every day, in our name, prisoners are visited and counseled. Those who have lost loved ones are consoled. Young
adults grow in their faith through Campus Ministry. Mass is
signed for the deaf in 36 parishes, and, in more than 115
parishes, religious education programs are tailored to children
with special needs. The dignity of life is promoted and defended.
The Annual Catholic Appeal is the one archdiocesan campaign to fund these many ministries. I urge you to contribute as
generously as your circumstances allow to this important campaign. Our goal for 2004 is to raise $8 million, and the materials being distributed in your parish spell out exactly where
those funds will go. No money donated to the Appeal has been
or will be used to defray the expenses related to the sexual misconduct scandal.
Through the Appeal, we are called to share with those who
are less fortunate a portion of the gifts that the Lord has blessed
us with. In giving, you become part of these wonderful stories
of faith in action. Thank you for your support. Know that you
are in my prayers; please pray for me as well.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

R We’ve all been there with you thousands of
times. The door swings back like a toy theatre curtain, the lights go on and that marvelous magical array of
goodies — ever changing, ever the same — is revealed
before you — snacks, sips, picks, pops, pulls, tastes, tidbits, nic-nac nibbles, disastrously non-organic and
unhealthy, the consummate cosmic sampler.
But more satisfying than the tasty temptations is the
rush of cool security as you crouch at the open womb of
mother ice box.
We know God sees — but He understands and forgives. His Son replenished the wine supply at the Cana
wedding and multiplied some loaves and fish for the hungry hillside listeners.
The only thing He doesn’t understand is when only a
few ice boxes in the world have most of the goodies.

ST. FERDINAND'S FISH FRY
Marzec 2004
Drodzy Przyjaciele w Chrystusie:
Setki
oddanych ekspertów-profesjonalistów i tysi¹ce doskonale przygotowanych wolontariuszy ukazuj¹ mi³oœæ Chrystusa do ludzi
zosta³y jeszcze powiedziane.
Katecheci, przygotowani odpowiednio przez Biuro
Katechetyczne ucz¹ religii i przygotowuj¹ do przyjêcia sakramentów œwiêtych ponad 125 tysiêcy dzieci w naszej
Archdiecezji. Wielu woluntariuszy w ramach programu
„Spreading the Holy Fire” (Rozprzestrzeniaæ Ogieñ Œwiêty)
koordynowanego przez Biuro Ewnagelizacyjne przygotowuje
siê do znalezienia i nak³onienia do powrotu do wiary i praktyk
religijnych wszystkich, którzy je zaniedbali lub porzucili.
Parafie i szko³y s³u¿¹ce wspólnotom znajduj¹cych siê
w rejonach s³abszych ekonomicznie otrzymuj¹ finansowe
wsparcie w celu pokonania kosztów zwi¹zanych z utrzymaniem
parafii i obiektów parafialnych. Diakoni oraz osoby pracuj¹ce
w duszpasterstwie œwieckich s¹ formowane, dokszta³cane i jednoczeœnie zachêcane do pozostania w swoim powo³aniu, aby
Kap³ani poprzez swoje
zaanga¿owanie bior¹ czynny udzia³ w ci¹g³ych programach formacji i kszta³cenia, gdzie pog³êbiaj¹ i utwierdzaj¹ siê w swoim
powo³aniu.
Codziennie, w naszym imieniu odwiedzane s¹ osoby przebywaj¹ce w zak³adach karnych. Osoby, które straci³y bliskich
s¹ otaczane opiek¹ i pokrzepiane. M³odzie¿ pog³êbia swoj¹
wiarê bior¹c udzia³ w Duszpasterstwie Studentów. Dla osób
nies³ysz¹cych odprawiane s¹ Msze Œw. jêzykiem migowym
w 34 parafiach, a w ponad 115 programy religii dostosowane
s¹ do potrzeb dzieci z opóŸnieniami w rozwoju. Równie¿
ochrona ¿ycia jest g³êboko popierana i broniona.
Celem naszym
w roku 2004 jest zebranie 8 milionów dolarów. Materia³y, które
w tej chwili nadchodz¹ do waszych parafii dok³adnie objaœniaj¹
Dziêkujê ka¿demu z was za
ofiarnoœæ. Jesteœcie w moich modlitwach, proszê was równie¿ o

How to forgive
One day a while back, a man, his heart heavy with
grief, was walking in the woods. As he thought about
his life this day, he knew many things were not right.
He thought about those who had lied about him back
when he had a job.
His thoughts turned to those who had stolen his
things and cheated him. He remembered family that
had passed on. His mind turned to the illness he had
that no one could cure. His very soul was filled with
anger, resentment and frustration.
Standing there this day, searching for answers he could not
find, knowing all else had failed him, he knelt at the base of an old
oak tree to seek the one he knew would always be there. And with
tears in his eyes, he prayed:
"Lord— You have done wonderful things for me in this life. You
have told me to do many things for you, and I happily obeyed.
Today, you have told me to forgive. I am sad, Lord, because I cannot. I don't know how. It is not fair, Lord. I didn't deserve these
wrongs that were done against me and I shouldn't have to forgive.
As perfect as your way is Lord, this one thing I cannot do, for I
don't know how to forgive. My anger is so deep, Lord, I fear I may
not hear you, but I pray that you teach me to do this one thing I
cannot do - Teach me to forgive."
As he knelt there in the quiet shade of that old oak tree, he felt
something fall onto his shoulder. He opened his eyes. Out of the
corner of one eye, he saw something red on his shirt. He could not
turn to see what it was because where the oak tree
had been was a large square piece of wood in the
ground. He raised his head and saw two feet held to
the wood with a large spike through them.
He raised his head more, and tears came to his
eyes as he saw Jesus hanging on a cross. He saw
spikes in His hands, a gash in His side, a torn and battered body, deep thorns sunk into His head. Finally he
saw the suffering and pain on His precious face. As
their eyes met, the man's tears turned to sobbing, and
Jesus began to speak. "Have you ever told a lie?" He asked. The
man answered - "yes, Lord." "Have you ever been given too much
change and kept it?" The man answered - " Yes. Lord." And the
man sobbed more and more. "Have you ever taken something
from work that wasn't yours?" Jesus asked. And the man
answered, "Yes, Lord." "Have you ever sworn, using my Father's
name in vain? " The man, crying now, answered - "Yes, Lord." As
Jesus asked many more times, "Have you ever?" The man's crying became uncontrollable, for he could only answer - "Yes, Lord."
Then Jesus turned His head from one side to the other, and
the man felt something fall on his other shoulder. He looked and
saw that it was the blood of Jesus. When he looked back up, his
eyes met those of Jesus, and there was a look of love the man had
never seen or known before.
Jesus said, "I didn't deserve this either, but I forgive you."
