“Will You Take Care of My Mother?”
Imagine the thoughts running through Jesus’ mind when He had to
approach His friend, John, to ask, in advance of His oncoming death, if
he would take care of His mother after He was gone! John was probably
a little surprised, not thinking that Jesus was actually going to be leaving this earth so soon. When Jesus approached him with this task, can
you imagine his reaction? What if Jesus were to ask the same of you?
She was already up in years, she was about to endure the final
‘sword’ by seeing her Son put to death. She was going to need a lot of
attention and love. Could you have done it?
She would be sought out by enemies of Jesus and ridiculed. She
would be shunned on the streets for having a boy who was just executed
for all the trouble he had caused. Could you have taken her in your
home and cared for her?
She was without any real income, without a husband...in terms of
the world, a real loser. Could you have taken care of her?

She probably could read into your heart and sense your fears surrounding this challenge. She had to hope you would say ‘Yes’ so she would not be left to fend for herself until her last moments, now without her only Son at her side. Could you help her? After all, she said ‘Yes’ once to help you out.
After all the years of preparation and silent faith, now she seemed to be getting the short end of the stick. Her Son, dying
before her eyes, holding His cold body in her arms, she would be a little numb, a little emotionally fragile. Could you comfort
her, hold her, feed her, pray with her, take care of her for Jesus?
Yes, in a few days, much of those fears would be relieved. She would see her Son risen from the dead. Things would be different. But, she still would need you to take care of her for years to come. Would you do it? Will you do it? Do you think she
still might need you to do some things for her? Honestly? Even now? You know she still wants your help. If Jesus were to ask
you right now, would you help to take care of His mother?

ONE CONSTANT EMBRACE
This week Friday is the annual
Four Eagle Award Banquet. Ever
since we became an official Shrine
Church, we have celebrated the
Parish Patronal Feast of Saint
Stanislaus (still recognized as May 8th in the Polish calendar)
with a special banquet that acknowledges the many people and
organizations that share in the mission of the Saint Stanislaus
community. Our commitment to the spiritual, educational, cultural, and social life of the community is well known and recognized throughout the region. But we do not do this alone. Once
a year, we recognize and celebrate that at a festive and elegant
banquet which is also a major fund-raiser for the Spring season.
This year we recognize a group of people who share in
some of the most intimate and emotional events in our lives.
Five Catholic families have long established ties to our
neighborhood, our parish, and our families as the directors of
the funerals that mark then end of the earthly journeys of those
we love. Golubski, Mosinski, Komorowski, Fortuna, and
Bican — these are all names that we know, places we recognize, people with whom we entrust the bodies of our deceased
spouses, parents, children, lovers, and friends. These are the
first ones we call when we have received the hardest news of
our lives. These are the ones who say to us, “Don’t worry, I’ll
take care of it,” when we are most vulnerable and unable to
think for ourselves. These are the ones who call a bit later and
ask, “How are you doing?” These are the ones who make sure
we have “All our affairs in order.”
The business climate in almost any line of work has
changed dramatically over the last 100+ years. Even the funeral “industry” has undergone changes that, in many cities,
make their work more of a business and less of a ministry. The
era of family-owned funeral homes is diminishing in many cities. And those who do remain find it harder to remain independent, let alone to remain in the city neighborhood where
they originated.
But these friends of ours are a crucial part of the spiritual
ministry we share as well as the neighborhood stability that we
seek. According to the Polish legend, when Stanislaus was
martyred and his body dismembered and thrown into a pond,
four eagles hovered above, protecting his body until it could be
reverently interred by the faithful. What a fitting symbol for
the faith-filled service of those whom we honor on May 8.
As one elderly parishioner said so beautifully, as she handed
in her response card, “I’m going to be buried by ___________,
and I won’t be able to say ‘Thank you’ then, so I’m going to
say it now!” If you haven’t yet responded, please call the rectory by the end of Monday, May 4, and we’ll still have room for
a few more guests. Last year’s event was a lot of fun, extraordinarily elegant, and raised significant funds to support the parish. Many thanks already to the volunteers and to Rick Sklodowski, whose elegant and refined catering style will dazzle us
yet again!

Kościelna amnestia?
Przed prawie dwoma
miesiącami, 10 lutego 2009 roku
ukazał się w lokalnej gazecie „The
Plain Dealer” artykuł o odnowieniu
praktyki odpustów w Kościele
katolickim. Jego tytuł, jak przystało
na praktykę dziennikarską, był
trochę prowokujący „Revival of
ind ulgences gives Cat ho lics
amnesty”,
co
można
przetłumaczyć: „Przywrócenie do
życia odpustów daje katolikom amnestię”.
Artykuł spowodował komentarze. Sam byłem parę razy
pytany o to, jak to z tymi odpustami w Kościele katolickim jest.
Ciekawa rzecz - te pytania pochodziły od katolików, co więcej od
regularnie praktykujących katolików. „Regularnie” to znaczy tu
tyle, co „uczestniczący we Mszy św. codziennie”. Jeśli coś słyszeli
o odpustach, to tylko w związku z Reformacją i Marcinem Lutrem,
który zwalczał ówczesną praktykę uzyskiwania odpustów. Ci
gorliwi katolicy nie nie tylko, że nie wiedzieli jak można uzyskać
odpusty, ale co gorsze, nigdy o istnieniu odpustów nie słyszeli. A
jeśli nie słyszeli, to dlatego, że nikt im tego nie powiedział, a sami
nie czytali nic na ten temat.
To nie miejsce i czas, aby odnieść się do ówczesnych
praktyk związanych z uzyskiwaniem odpustów. Raczej
chciałbym uzasadnić pokrótce teologiczne podstawy odpustów
w Kościele oraz wyjaśnić, jak możemy je uzyskać.
Kościół uczy, że posiada skarby zasług Chrystusa, Maryi i
wszystkich świętych. A jeśli je posiada, to po to, aby je rozdać.
One są dla nas. Każdego dnia możemy dostąpić takiego
odpustu dla siebie lub ofiarować go za innych (tylko zmarłych).
Czym jest odpust? Darowaniem kar za grzechy już
odpuszczone co do winy. Widzimy zatem, że ta praktyka nie
zastępuje spowiedzi.
Jeśli ktoś się wyspowiadał, żałował za grzechy - zostały mu
one przebaczone, ale jeszcze musi odpokutować karę za ich
popełnienie. Przykładowo, ktoś z własnej winy zniszczył
samochód sąsiada. Nie wystarczy, że go przeprosi i się z tego
wyspowiada. Potrzeba jeszcze, aby naprawił szkodę. Każdy grzech
jest taką „szkodą” zadaną Bogu. Spowiadający się doznaje
miłosierdzia Bożego - wina zostaje mu przebaczona; ale Boża
sprawiedliwość domaga się wynagrodzenia, czyli odpokutowania
za grzechy, co nazywamy karą za grzech. Przez odpusty możemy
uzyskać darowanie tych kar. Możemy taki odpust ofiarować za
siebie lub za dusze cierpiące w czyśćcu, na przykład członków
rodziny lub przyjaciół, lub ogólnie za wszystkie.
Mamy odpusty zupełne i cząstkowe. Odpust zupełny jest
darowaniem wszystkich kar za grzechy już przebaczone co do
winy; odpust cząstkowy jest darowaniem części tych kar.
Aby uzyskać odpust musimy wypełnić określoną czynność,
do której przypisane jest uzyskanie odpustu oraz
- przyjąć Komunię św.;
- pomodlić się w intencjach Ojca św.;
- nie mieć żadnego upodobania w grzechu.
Przykładowymi praktykami, do których przypisane jest
uzyskanie odpustów są: odmówienie Różańca św., odprawienie
Drogi Krzyżowej itd. Za każdy dobry czyn, słowo,
umartwienie, cierpliwe zniesienie bólu lub przykrości możemy
uzyskać odpust cząstkowy.

ST. STAN’S HISTORICAL FACT

Ohio became a state in 1803. In 1808 all
of the state of Ohio was under the care of
the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky. A
Dominican priest, Father Edward Fenwick
and other missionaries visit scattered
Catholic families in Ohio in 1817 and 1818.
In 1821 the Diocese of Cincinnati is created.
This Diocese encompasses the entire state
of Ohio. The building of the Ohio and Erie
canal brings a large number of Irish and
German immigrants to Northern Ohio in
1825. Many of these immigrants are Catholic. The oldest parish
in the present Diocese of Cleveland,
Sts. Peter and Paul in Wayne County,
St. Mary’s
is formed in 1827. In 1838 the first
Catholic Church in Cleveland, St.
Mary’s of the Flats is formed. The
Diocese of Cleveland is formed in
1847. The Community of St.
Stanislaus is formed in 1873. Our
people worship at St. Mary’s of the
Flats (sometimes known as Our Lady
of the Lakes). The current St.
Stanislaus Church under construction
since 1886 is a finished building in
1891.

CLEVELAND HAS A 69%
ILLITERACY RATE.
In 2007, Cleveland ranked 2nd in the
nation in terms of people in poverty,
according to the US Census Bureau.
There's a connection between illiteracy
and poverty that you can help to break.
Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit
organization offering free, one-to-one
tutoring in basic adult education and GED
preparation, has a great need for volunteer
tutors. Since January, their student
enrollment has increased by 30% weekly
Tutors work individually with
students on reading, writing and math
skills, offer encouragement and support,
and help students develop confidence and
positive attitudes about learning

OBITUARY FOR SOMEONE ELSE
Our church was saddened to learn
this week of the death of one of our
most valued members, Someone Else.
Someone's passing creates a
vacancy that will be difficult to fill.
Else has been with us for many years
and for every one of those years,
Someone did far more than a normal
person's share of the work. Whenever
there was a job to do, a class to teach,
or a meeting to attend, one name was
on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else
do it." Whenever leadership was
mentioned, this wonderful person was
looked to for inspiration as well as
results; "Someone Else can work with
that group." I t w a s c o m m o n
knowledge that Someone Else was
among the most liberal givers in our
church. Whenever there was a financial
need, everyone just assumed Someone
Else would make up the difference.
Someone Else was a wonderful person;
sometimes appearing superhuman.
Were the truth known, everybody
expected too much of Someone Else.
Now Someone Else is gone! We
wonder what we are going to do.
Someone Else left a wonderful example
to follow, but who is going to follow it?
Who is going to do the things Someone
Else did? When you are asked to help
this year, remember -- we can't depend
on Someone Else anymore
FOUR EAGLES AWARD
It’s almost here! The Seventh Annual Four Eagle
Banquet and Silent Auction will take place on Friday,
May 8, 2009, in the Social Center, starting at 6 PM. This
year we are honoring five Slavic Village funeral
homes—Bican Brothers, Fortuna, Golubski,
Komorowski, & Mosinski—for their commitment to our
community and the special ministry they provide. Your
$65 ticket includes several food stations (both hot and
cold), a main meal, dessert, an open bar, music, and a
HUGE Silent Auction. In addition, you will witness the
transformation of the Social Center into a wonderful
party center filled with conversation and laughter. You really don’t want to miss

Pogrzeb KOGOŚ INNEGO
Nasz Kościół przyjął z bólem wiadomość o
śmierci jednego z najbardziej
wartościowych członków naszej
wspólnoty - KOGOŚ INNEGO.
Odejście KOGOŚ INNEGO powoduje
lukę trudną do zapełnienia. KTOŚ INNY
był z nami przez tak długie lata. Każdy
mógł na niego liczyć, ilekroć go
potrzebowaliśmy. KTOŚ INNY brał na
siebie większy niż przeciętny udział w
pracy, która była do wykonania. Zawsze,
kiedy trzeba było coś zrobić, kiedy
potrzeba była zastępstwa w szkole,
spotkanie, w którym trzeba było wziąć
udział, jedno nazwisko było na listach
wszystkich: „Niech KTOŚ INNY to zrobi”.
Kiedy chodziło o wybranie przełożonego,
inni zgodnie patrzyli na tą wspaniałą osobę
oczekując od niej natchnienia i wyników: „
KTOŚ INNY może pracować z tą grupą”.
Wszyscy wiedzieli o tym, że KTOŚ INNY
dawał hojnie na składkę w naszym
kościele. Kiedy parafia była w potrzebie,
KTOŚ INNY dawał, co brakowało.
KTOŚ INNY był wspaniałą osobą,
czasami wydawał się wręcz „nadludzki”.
Wszyscy dobrze wiemy, że oczekiwaliśmy
za dużo od KOGOŚ INNEGO. Ale teraz
KTOŚ INNY odszedł. Zastanawiamy się,
co możemy uczynić w tej sytuacji.
KTOŚ INNY zostawił nam wspaniały
przykład do naśladowania, ale kto zechce
pójść w jego ślady? Kto zechce robić to
wszystko, co robił KTOŚ INNY?
Jeśli w tym roku zostaniecie poproszeni o
pomoc, pamiętajcie - nie możemy już
więcej liczyć na KOGOŚ INNEGO.
