The essential purpose of the College is to work with parents in order to help our students live a fully integrated life – a life in which they each achieve academically and develop their own talents while living, working and praying in a Catholic faith community which takes its values and goals from the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. As members of such a community we must all not only take responsibility for our own development but also help each other to grow as individuals. philosophy The College has six key areas of activity that we believe are crucial to the future success and fulfillment of our students. These are called the Six Pillars and they cover: Special Character; Academic; Community; Cultural; Sporting; Boarding. 1 Facilities Situated on over 22 hectares of fields and trees, close enough to the centre of Christchurch to be able to make full use of the city’s amenities, but private enough to retain its own air of tranquility and spaciousness, the College enjoys grounds and facilities that are the envy of many. Dormitories The Boarding School has three dormitories and each is designated to specific groupings. Dormitory masters live in each dorm, and accommodation is either open plan or single / double rooms. Jarrow This caters for Years 11 and 12 and comprises single and double rooms, common room and ablution block. It is a modern single-storied building set on the southern boundary. Durham The Year 13 dormitory area is located on the third floor of the last remaining wing of the old building. Rooms are either singles or doubles and a dormitory master lives on the same floor. ESOL Rugby International Student Coordinator St Bede’s College has a long established rugby tradition and the ESOL rugby programme has been successfully operating since 2002. Mrs. Patricia Bradley ESOL rugby students become fully integrated members of our school community and participate in all regular aspects of College life. This includes assemblies, the Eucharist and of course sport. They live on-site during term time but have the opportunity to spend time with host families during the holiday periods. The motto of the College is Fide et Opere (By Faith and Works) and our aim is to produce young men who are hard working and live their lives by a code of good values and consideration of others. Our experience with previous intakes of ESOL rugby players is that they also strive to live out this philosophy. Duration: 22 weeks, commencing in March and finishing in August. ESOL Rugby Director Mr. Mark Ealey ESOL ESOL course will focus on increasing the four Language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing, with resources taken from a variety of contexts.
