Post Christmas Thanks
In the rush of getting the parish grounds and Church ready, I didn't have time to express my
appreciation to those who carry off the projects. I wanted to take this opportunity to do so now.
First, the beautiful decorations in the church were assembled by Sophie Kass. Each year Sophie
has scurried about town to find the appropriate decorations and then gives many hours placing them on
the trees in the sanctuary and about the church. She has organized them and packs them away after the
Christmas season so that we might use them another year. She was helped by Rose Clemente, Helen
Kononik, and Violet DelVecchio. It is amazing to see them accomplish this feat. Thank you so much,
ladies, for making our church the beautiful worship place it is.
Secondly, thanks to our entire maintenance crew for all of the lifting, carrying and cleaning to make Christmas
come alive in and outside of the Church, Chapel and Rectory. There are twenty trees in church alone that were dug out
of their storage places, assembled and had lights strung, along with the assembly of the crèche, before the women can
even begin their work. A special thank you to Charles Clemente, Wojtek W³osiak and Mrs. Aneta Koæma, our
Administrative Assistant, who prepared all of the outdoor lighting in record time this year.
All these efforts made our Christmas bright. Well done!
As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in
their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of
their remembering us. And so ... please remember in your
prayers:

Contribution Statements
In the past, many parishes
(including ourselves) mailed out contribution statements at the end of
every year. We have found, however,
that due to certain changes in IRS tax
laws and other circumstances, most
people no longer need the information found on these
statements. Because of this, and also the high cost of
postage, we will NOT be sending them out once again
this year.
If you still need a contribution statement, please call
the rectory after January 15, 2004, Monday through
Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to request one and
to arrange a time and date that you will pick it up.
Statements will be printed by request only.

Baptism: A Beginning Baptism signaled the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.
It signals the beginning of ours as well. For us, baptism begins at the
font, but it doesn’t end there. Baptism is promise, not fulfillment. Baptism
is for growth, growth into communion with all others who have been baptized. When we are immersed in the waters of baptism, we rise because of
God’s “favor;” we rise by a “given” energy not our own. We name that
life force the Holy Spirit. What does baptism say to us? Baptism says,
“You don’t have to be your own leader, a self-made person. You don’t
have to rely only on yourself to be successful.” In the community of the
Church, all the baptized find security, service, success, and wondrous
favor.
• Comment
The people who
approached John for baptism were
poised and ready. They were on the
lookout for the coming of a new
leader, king, and liberator. John quickly informed them that he was not the
one they were looking for, that a
mightier one than he would be coming
soon with a baptism of Spirit and fire.
The reference to fire here recalls
ancient covenants and purifications in
which objects were cleansed by being
passed through fire. It also recalls
God’s presence, which was frequently
accompanied by fire. John wanted his
listeners to realize that baptism with
fire means both a complete purification and also the presence of God (the
Holy Spirit) in all those so purified.
The Gospel goes on to recount
how the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus,
designating him the long-awaited
Messiah. Perhaps all the people gathered at the Jordan didn’t realize that
Jesus was more than a human servant,
but the Spirit’s words were understood
by those who preached after Pentecost
and by the author of today’s Gospel,
who uses the word “Son” quite pointedly.
As the new calendar year begins,
the story of the necessary baptism of
Jesus signals his journey from life to
death. This first revealing chapter of
Jesus’ life story and its meaning is set
before us. This story will be told and
understood through the bright light of
the Resurrection. We are invited to
take it all in and make it ours. What a
marvelous favor!
•Reflection
This Sunday
brings the Christmas season to a close.
It brings the reality of God-with-us,
“Emmanuel,” as close as it can get.
This Sunday, the liturgy exhorts us to
recall our identification with Christ.
Making the life of this redeeming, gentle Servant and Son our own life means
living our baptism, our “Christening.”
Because we have been baptized into
his death and resurrection, we, too, are
servants and sons or daughters of God.
This is our gift or “favor.” We are the
beloved ones, no matter what we do or
how well or how badly we act as God’s
beloved. Together we pray to be faithful to our baptismal identification with
God’s Son, to follow his path of service, and to be as open to God as God
is to us.
As baptized Christians, we have
been favored with a share of the light
and life of Jesus, God’s “favored One.”
Being favored means many things: it
means basking in grace; it means traveling a holy path; it means journeying
to eternal life in light. It also means
being busy about what baptized people
do. Being favored means sharing the
favor. And we can’t do this in the
abstract. We have to give of ourselves
to others as Jesus did.
We must heal the sick, reach out to
the poor, challenge evil, and even die
for one another if that is called for—
and it most surely is. This week, let’s
do someone a favor: send some flowers to a nursing home, donate some
good used clothes to a free store or
women’s shelter, write a legislator
about an important bill that’s pending,
refuse to put up with prejudice, give
some special thanks for baptism, and
remember how favored we are.

Readings for the Week
January 4, 2004
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
You have heard and read much over the last two years about
the Church’s response to the tragedy of child sexual abuse by
Catholic clergy. Now, two comprehensive national reports concerning this tragedy will finally be issued by the U.S. Catholic
Conference of Bishops’ Office of Child and Youth Protection
and the National Review Board in Washington, D.C. I know the
information contributed by the Archdiocese of Chicago to each
report, but I do not have and have not seen the final comprehensive reports. I am looking forward to the information and
perspective these reports are expected to provide.
Let me update you on what I know now:
On Tuesday, January 6, the first national report will be issued
and will detail the findings of an independent compliance audit
of every Catholic diocese and eparchy in the U.S. The audits
were commissioned by the Office of Child and Youth
Protection and conducted between June and November of 2003
by The Gavin Group, an independent firm, in order to assure
the compliance of dioceses with the articles of the bishops'
Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The
report covers the period between June 2002 (when all U.S.
Bishops approved the Charter in Dallas) and November 2003,
and will contain an overview of the Charter, individual audit
summaries for each diocese, a summary of the trends of the
findings, and some recommendations for next steps.
The Archdiocese of Chicago underwent the audit process during the last week of July and was found to be in compliance
with the Charter. We will be able to offer further specifics about
our individual archdiocesan audit when the entire report is
released on January 6. Our archdiocesan audit report will be
published in The Catholic New World and posted on our website (www.archchicago.org).
In coming weeks, I will share additional information about a
second national report, a statistical survey concerning child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy over the past 50 years, known as
the John Jay Study. It is scheduled to be released on Friday,
February 27. This report will offer aggregate data and statistics
from all U.S. dioceses related to child sexual abuse allegations
made since the 1950s. It is designed to provide us all with the
base-line national data which will help us better understand the
causes of the scandal.
I ask that you continue to pray for all who been victimized by
sexual abuse and for all those affected by this scandal. You and
those you love are daily in my prayers; please keep me in
yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

4 stycznia 2004 r.
Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie:
W ci¹gu ostatnich dwóch lat s³yszeliœmy i czytaliœmy wiele na temat reakcji Koœcio³a na tragedie, jak¹ s¹ seksualne
nadu¿ycia kleru katolickiego wobec dzieci. Wkrótce, w Waszyngtonie Biuro d/s Ochrony Dzieci i M³odzie¿y przy Katolickiej
Konferencji Biskupów Stanów Zjednoczonych wraz z Krajow¹ Rad¹ Nadzorcz¹ opublikuje dwa obszerne sprawozdania na ten
temat.
We wtorek, 6 stycznia 2004 r. zostanie podane do wiadomoœci publicznej pierwsze z kilkunastu sprawozdañ awieraj¹cych
w Sprawie Ochrony Dzieci i M³odzie¿y. Sprawozdanie dotyczy okresu od czerwca 2002 (kiedy to w Dallas wszyscy biskupi Stanów
Zjednoczonych zaaprobowali ustalenia Karty) do listopada 2003.
Archidiecezja nasza spe³nia wymagania Karty. Wszystkie szczegó³y dotycz¹ce przebiegu procesu kontroli w Archidiecezji
Chicagowskiej zostan¹ udostêpnione, gdy ju¿ ca³e sprawozdanie zostanie podane do wiadomoœci publicznej czyli 6 stycznia 2004.
Treœæ sprawozdania zostanie wydrukowana w “Catholic New World” oraz zamieszczona na naszej witrynie internetowej pod
adresem www.archchicago.org.
skandalu.
Proszê Was o bezustanne modlitwy w intencji ofiar nadu¿yæ seksualnych i wszystkich osób dotkniêtych t¹ tragedi¹.

That We May Have Priests…
More than 98% of the diocesan priests in
Chicago experienced their educational and
spiritual formation in our seminary system.
To meet the challenge of priesthood, today’s
priests must master several skills including
theology, pastoral skills, counseling, preaching, business and personnel management as
well as speaking in 2 or even 3 languages.
With your support, they begin to develop
these skills in the seminary system of the
Archdiocese of Chicago.
The Collection for the Seminary System for
the Archdiocese of Chicago is January 31 –
February 1, 2004.
