The seminar is addressed to students interested in pursuing their individual or suggested
research topics in American Studies. Topics related to the following general areas are particularly
encouraged: American urban history and local history case studies, problematics of the American West
and Southwest, paradigms of American history, American historical imagination and memory, American
space and time, American race relations and race representations, American Indians, Black and Latino
culture, American minority culture, American literature, theater and performance, film, comedy, T.V.,
landscape representation, American art, American music(s), American imperialism, post-colonial and
decolonial studies, as well as interdisciplinary studies located at the interstices of any of the above.
Although it is not imperative to come to the seminar with a clear idea it is, however, strongly
suggested. All topics will have to be developed by the end of October 2015 when a synopsis of the thesis
will have to be presented. The first chapter is due at the end of the first semester.
Failure to present the chapter will result in negative credit. All works should be finished within the academic
year.
Except focusing on research students will be acquainted with elements of style, formal
requirements, research techniques. Reports on progress and presentations for peers will be required.

Seminarium dyplomowe poświęcone jest przedstawieniu i omówieniu zaawansowanej tematyki
specjalizacyjnej w odniesieniu do wiedzy i zainteresowań seminarzystów. Udział w zajęciach pozwala
studentom przygotować i wdrożyć projekt pracy badawczej, będący próbą opracowania określonego
problemu badawczego, opartym na odpowiednio dobranej podstawie teoretyczno-metodologicznej.
Głównym celem seminarium jest rozwój krytycznej analizy zagadnień związanych z kulturą USA i innych
krajów anglojęzycznych w XX i XXI wieku. Tematyka obejmuje kulturę popularną i wysoką, religię, seks
i gender politykę, socjolingwistykę, komunikację międzykulturową i analizę dyskursu. Student
przygotowuje się do prowadzenia bardziej złożonych i samodzielnych badań filologicznych pogłębia
znajomości metodologii i warsztatu badań, w tym metod wnioskowania, uzasadniania i weryfikacji, rozwija
umiejętności przygotowywania dłuższych prac pisemnych, m.in. zbierania i selekcji materiałów,
porządkowania opracowywanego tematu, redakcji tekstu, publicznej prezentacji własnych tez i dyskusji
nad nimi oraz pracy w grupie.

The aim of the course is to prepare students for writing their BA diploma papers in linguistics. During the
course students will be guided through the process of choosing the topic of their interest, planning a
research project related to it and writing the BA paper.
The course will focus on such issues as collecting and selecting literature, planning and conducting
research and then interpreting the research material. It will also provide students with the opportunity to
get familiar with various aspects connected with academic writing, such as academic style, structure of
the thesis, quotations and paraphrasing, and language correctness.
Students are welcome to suggest their own research topics related to discourse analysis, cognitive
linguistics or sociolinguistics.
The compulsory reading list will be presented at the beginning of the course.
