The travelers, artists, painters, poets, writers, diarists, journalists and pioneers of the Polish mountain tourism admired it previously in the XVIII and XIX centuries, as Aleksander Fredro wrote: „We stopped after passing Lesko on the top of the hill and observed the huge rock fragment. No trace of a human hand is visible, but its shape resembles the part of the large building. Many legends concern this stone. One legend is more charming than the other one”. According to the legend, the bad daughter was carrying a pitcher of water from the San River for her very thirsty mother waiting in the Glinne village. She met a boy and began chatting with him forgetting about her dying from thirst and feverish mother. The mother cursed her using the words: “You, who does not know the love and has the heart of stone, turn into stone yourself ”. The daughter turned into stone that resembled a shape of a stone heart. The 220 meters long rocky perch is located on the hill. The deposits of the Krosno Formation are represented by thick-bedded sandstones crop out on this perch. These sandstones were deposited in the sea of Menilite-Krosno Basin, which in Oligocene, around 30-20 million years ago, was a remnant sea of the larger Outer Carpathian Basin. This area was filling with deposits, forming an accretionary prism in front of the drifting Inner Carpathian lithospheric plate. This prism included mainly sandy-shale deposits representing the Carpathian flysch. These deposits were formed in a process of destruction of intrabasinal ridges and earlier consolidated rocks of the inner units of the Outer Carpathians. The material from the eroded areas was transported by turbidity currents into the deeper zones of the basin. The depth of these basinal zones decreased, from a few kilometers 50 million years ago to few hundred meters 20 million years ago, during the period of sedimentation of sandstones building the Kamień LeskiThe collision of the Inner Carpathian lithospheric plate with the North European plate photo Jan Golonka mamie z Glinnego dzban wody z Sanu i wdając się w rozmowę z napotkanym chłopcem zapomniała o umierającej w gorączce i pragnieniu matce, która przeklęła ją słowami: „Ty, która nie znasz miłości i masz serce z kamienia, obyś skamieniała”. Fig. 4. Przewieszona ściana w piaskowcu krośnieńskim Fig. 4. Overhanging rock wall built of the Krosno Sandstone erosion. These processes shaped the Kamień Leski. Human activity contributed to its final shape; the north-eastern part of this object was mined in the quarry that was active some time ago. The medium-grained, poorly sorted sandstones belong to the lower part of the Krosno Formation. These sandstones display a platy separateness in their upper part. They make walls up to 20 meters high in the central part of this object. These walls are frequently visited by rock climbers. The characteristic rock tower protrudes around 8 meters above the perch’s surface. The rocks dip toward the southwest at a 25 degree angle. Visitors can observe joint surfaces as well as fantastic shapes originated during the weathering processes. The object is frequently visited by tourists heading towards the Bieszczady Mountains. The green trail runs through the Kamień Leski area. Near, in the town Lesko, there are historic monuments like the castle, the old market, the church and the synagogue.
